Anybody around hunt ptarmigan with gundogs? I love hunting moose, caribou, ducks, geese.Best though is ptarmigan (locally called partridge) over setters. I have 2 gordon setters and 1 English. For ptarmigan over dogs though you have to hunt where ther is a bit of hunting pressure. In the backcountry birds are to tame. Here in Newfoundland nobody hunts grouse with dogs although there are lots of gouse (ruffed and spruce grouse) Ptarmigan over dogs though is popular. Wondering if anybody else out ther hunts ptarmigan regularly

I hunt them quite a bit. They are my favorite game bird. I have an American Water Spaniel and she does well with these birds. In the hip high willows I seldom see her as she flushes the birds. She is very good about staying within 15 yards of the gunner. I have hunted them over setters once and it was a blast. Winter hunting is real tough on dogs so I go without them when the snow gets deeper.pak
