Yes, and sadly, the vets of WW2 are going away quickly now, and there are several that I miss very much. This piece is excellent and poignant. For as long as this story is told, that Marine will live in history and memory. Please choose life.

Brought tears to my eyes. Spent part of the evening with my father in-laws log book. He was a Navigator in the RCAF . Spent most of his service flying over the Burma Hump supplying allied troops.

Several of you make a good point: that the piece continues to be new for some. I'll think about un-retiring it. Heck, my memory is getting bad enough that next year I'll forget that I even thought of retiring it… This is the first time I've seen it and I'm glad I read it. Thanks for posting it this year and I hope to see it again…

My FIL was in the Army Air Corps and was a B17 Pilot. Was shot down three times, the last of which led up to his capture by the Italians who turned him over to the Germans where he spent the last few months of the was in prison camp. He passed away in 1994.
His brother, my wife's Uncle Bobby, is in his 90's and was in the Navy. We would get tickled at the story of one brother flying bombers and the other playing a clarinet in the Navy Band... until we saw his picture in the band aboard the USS Missouri, at the unconditional surrender of the Japanese to the Allied Powers.
He lives in Ohio now.
