Ok guys i need a bit of advice. Got a 35 Whelen improved and need to make some brass. I have buckets of once fired 30-06 and probably 200 270 win. I also have plenty odds and ends loaded factory rounds of both. I have been running 30-06 through a 35 whelen die. Then loading and fireforming to 35 whelen AI. Then neck size and make the new 35 Whelen AI ammo. Takes lots of work to do this and cases are shorter than standard whelen. Can i just load the thing up and fire factory 270 or 30-06 and fire it? That would take all the work out and all i would have to do is trim to square them up and neck size and load. Any chance of the smaller bullet hitting the barrel and causing damage doing this? I know all the standard fireforming tricks. Id just like to know if it would work or if anyone has actually tried it. Thanks in advance.
If the world didnt suck we would all fall off!

Any chance of the smaller bullet hitting the barrel and causing damage doing this? First off, I have not tried this, but I would think that you will have lots of split necks, and if the neck/shoulder junction is not tight, case/head separation. My thoughts, no proof. miles

You'll probably not build enough pressure to form the cases well.

I'd use the 270 brass because they are longer.
I fire formed '06 brass to make my 35 AI brass. I necked my brass thru an 8mm-06 die first, then up to 375, finally back down to 358 with a false shoulder on the neck with a very snug crush fit.
This took a lot of steps, but of the 98 brass I had, absolutely 0 split necks or problems.
Good luck!

I would not do what you were pondering. I make my 35 WAI brass by fireforming using COW method on 35 Whelen brass.

finally back down to 358 with a false shoulder on the neck with a very snug crush fit. I did similar making .280 RCBS from .270 brass. Necked up to .30 cal and then back down to .280 with a false shoulder. My .30 cal RCBS die was kinda hard to go from .270 to .30 in one step due to the bluntness of the expander ball, so I ordered and expander from Lee and use my Lee universal decapping die. Lee expander has a lot better taper for such things. Worked great, but doing it over I would probably turn that expander down to barely over the .284 mark for less brass work. miles
