Blaine: You are probably right, but there are at least a THOUSAND ways he could have gotten his point across rather than the usual disdain for African hunting.

Notice that NO ONE person said anything disparaging until his pigeon english diatribe. Like yours we all have our opinions and that's what htis forum's for. Hell, I can't dispute that one gent that cited his pump action as being smooth or the A-Bolt. It was uncalled for and his annointed status here notwithstanding, I took umbrage. jorge

Best feeding action?

Easy.

A fine British double rifle.

Find something that feeds or ejects slicker than that... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

My Weatherby Vanguard in 300WSM. It is superslick and fast! My Win 70s would be next.

An AK47 is pretty slick in extreme environments as well as an M1:

I've done the AK several times and had better luck in F/F,via SKS.

Think/thunk highly of the Howa's in general...................

I have a 9x57 1908-vintage Mauser factory sporter that feeds better than anything I've ever owned. I grew curious one day, so put a fired case in the magazine, then worked the bolt. Into the chamber it went, slick and true as could be.

The best slam-loader I ever fired was an H&K SL-7. It fed and functioned with everything I put in it, including down-loaded 110 gr hollowpoints. (Won a few unlimited matches at bowling pin shoots against the full-auto boys with that setup, 20-odd years ago <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />.)

I suspect mileage varies by individual rifle, to some extent.

This time Lee24 has made a good point - the whole package has to be considered; for example, a pre-64 Model 70 in 300 H&H. While I have never owned one I have handled a couple or three and that combination practically feeds itself. My father had a re-worked M98 in the original chambering, 8x57, and it was a dream to operate, as the entire gun was designed around that cartridge. The geometry of the mag box makes a big difference, and Paul Mauser had that combination down cold.

For ratty-tat-tat,via boltgun...I guess I can like my massaged 308 LTR as good as anything.

The Kenworth shifter helps bolt manipulations, even though I do it "wrong" and I'm thinkin' there's inherent subconscious virtue to Berdan primed MilSurp Fodder. While I'm nimbly adept at driving a bolt and catching the empties outta the ejection port while stroking the bolt,I am more faster when the brass is of no concern.

I can pass shoot a 223AI well enough, that David Copperfield would be scratchin' his head trying to figure out how the empties got in my weakside mitt, but can do the LTR/MilSurp Thing more better.

The 77/22 punched K-Hornet is a greasy feed/function sumbitch too and pretty high on my general purpose list, for [bleep] & Giggles.

Always could like boltguns, though I slum now and again.........................

"Always cracked me up how "Africa Guys" sang feed/function virtues of a given platform, after shooting 9 shots outta the back of a Jeep, over 2wks."

The paragraph cited above was your first response to the subject. Explain to me how it was I that brought it up. I was just pointing out the relevance (or lack thereof) of your comments WRT the subject at hand, hence, I replied most assuredly "tongue in cheek" about the vehicle and shooting from it issue.

"That which you miss,is not my burden.

To depart from the katachrestic linguisticly bizarre "style" of our esteemed Alaska Guy and return to rifle actions; I might add that perhaps the smoothest feeding rifle I own is a version of the greatest American rifle-invention ever, the Win. 1886.

As a mechanical device for it's purpose, the '86 is rivalled ONLY by the Mauser 98 and the Westley Richards Dollshead Droplock sxs rifles, IMO. These are the BEST of their type and nothing else functions or maintains as well in typical field conditions. I have fine original German Mauser sporters and an '86 repro and trust these in Grizzly country over anything else; stock design, trigger and safety styles and sight configurations can and are modified to suit the individual shooting style, but, the mechanical quality of function remains.

IF, I had to hunt the entire world with only four rifles, I would choose my Browning repro 1886 SRC-.45-70, (Grizzly defence par excellence), my Brno 21H-long barrel-"roundbolt" in .280 Rem. a rifle that after over 50 years of hard B.C. bush use shoots and functions so well it amazes me. I would also take my Oberndorf Type 40-9.3x62, a rifle from Africa that is about as close to a perfect B.C. big game combo as 40+ years of experience can teach me.

Finally, I would pick the Westley in .450 Nitro and be happy with just these four, although my tack-driving MS carbine .30-06 built in 1971 would also be considered as it shoots so well and is so easy to function from the shoulder. I expect that facing dangerous African game is not really much different thad dealing with close-range Grizzlies here in B.C., so, my choices may work there as they have here.

"prolly" isn't even a word, here or in Alaska, but, WTF, without Stick's ego and "expertise", the Campfire would be far less entertaining........

In terms of pure smoothness, I'm surprised the Krag-Jrgensen hasn't made the list yet.
