Other than shooting them (of which the neighbors would probably not approve), what are some solutions to deterring neighborhood cats from using my yard as their private sheet box?

A few cups of anti-freeze out in your yard, and they will quit sheeting forever, and the neighbors will never here or see anything. A when little cuddles turns up dead, you can pled innocence.

A 220 conibear in a bucket set baited with a little tuna.... I've "deterred" a few with that setup.

I occasionally catch them in a live trap and then hose them down until I'm sure they won't come back. Sometimes it takes a pretty good dousing to convince me.
I don't think I've ever caught the same cat twice and I don't think I've ever seen the same ones back in our yard either.

The thing about antifreeze is that it's always fatal, it is a horrible way to die and it kills whatever happens to be attracted to the sweet taste, like dogs or children and such. I don't know if the people that suggest the antifreeze solution to pest problems are just stupid or sociopathic, but they're definitely [bleep] up.

A finely tuned Kerry Blue Terrier will usually do the job. Even for those cats who are not deterred, the recidivism rate is extremely low.

The best part of taking them to the pound is that when you do it right before they close, the owners have to pay for an overnight. A couple of those $50 to $70 incidents will make the owners quite a bit more careful. JMO, Dutch.

I can be as mean as the next guy, BUT, to put out anti-freeze is the mark of an idiot!!!! I say if you are having a problem with a loose animal, and your community has a leash law, live trap, and give kitty a ride to the humane society.
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer but how he hunted it.

I usually place some moth balls/crystals where-ever a dog or cat has pooped. It seems to deter them. The smell counteracts the "use this spot as the latrine" ambience. If you have small children don't use the mothballs, use the crystals.

This usually works pretty good also.

Why do people who own cats think that it's all right for their cat to roam the neighborhood killing the local wildlife and crapping in everyone elses' gardens? What ticks me off are the owners not the animals.

[color:"brown"]I agree with Ken......
I feed wild birds and cats try to use my feeders as their personal lunch counter.
I found shooting the maurading pussycats in the azz (they often walk with their tails standing erect making a "Texas heart shot" fairly easy) with a 'scoped pellet pistol with about 3 "pumps" in it tends to scare the cats so bad they practically turn inside out getting outta my yard... and they rarely come back.
The "treatment" isn't fatal since the pellet "stings" 'em, but doesn't penetrate their skin... but it sure makes the cats wonder what "GRABBED" 'em "back there"...
As concerns the anti-freeze idea... yes, it would certainly kill the cats..... along with dogs, squirrels, rabbits, birds and even children or anything else that drank the sweet-tasting solution.
BESIDES... watching the cats' reaction when it thinks it is being "attacked from the rear by an invisible attacker" brings tears of laughter to one's face... one cat I hit square in the azz actually jumped about 6 feet STRAIGHT UP... and landed running at flank "emergency" speed until he was outta sight!!!
Just be careful NOT to hit their faces (basically their "eyes")... the idea is to run 'em off... not harm them permanently. I usually wait to take the shot ONLY when they are walking (preferably) straight-away from me so that there is no chance of hitting their heads. Second best "shot" is when they are stalking a bird and are slinking along sideways to you... a shot in the hip near their fanny works "wonders"!!!
Just be sure NOT to give the pellet pistol more than 3 "pumps". At that velocity, it's about like a semi-weak BB gun, but more accurate... and, let's face it, it's good "practice" for hunting season!
Of course, if the feral and domestic cats get too thick, the resident coyotes move into the area for a while and clean out all of the cats. Coyotes MUST love the taste of "cat" since I've noticed after the coyotes are around (I see the cat's and coyote's paw prints in the snow during the Winter when I got out to fill the bird feeders each morning), there are NO CATS in the neighborhood for quite a while other than those very few cats who were close enough to home to get inside before the coyotes caught them.
The truth is... I don't "hate" cats. I just don't "like" 'em very much when they kill wildlife (like baby bunnies) and the birds that bring so much enjoyment into our lives.

This was in today's paper... now why isn't she being charged for letting her animal go free through the neighborhood?
Animal-cruelty charge filed A 77-year-old Pine Grove man is accused of fatally shooting his neighbor's cat Saturday morning.
State police say Robert Archer used a .22-caliber rifle to kill Cathy Bonawitz's siamese/calico mix cat named "Little One."
Bonawitz, 60, told police she heard a gunshot about 8:40 a.m. from Archer's house and, when she ran outside, she saw Archer on his back porch with a brown rifle in his hand. He was heading inside when she saw her cat's body in the yard, she said.
Bonawitz, who lives next to Archer in the 3700 block of Sweet Arrow Lake Road, said she has had problems in the past with the Archers over "minor things."
Police charged Archer with cruelty to animals.

As much as I hate Cats I'ld never use anti-freeze. It's legal to shoot them here if they are more than 100yrds from a domain and I will do that. Now for your problem. 1 bottle of dave's insanity sauce ( havanaro sauce) 1 can soda pop (it helps hold the Havanaro it place) put in a 1 gal spray pump and fill with water. spray on yard and any were there is dirt were they can dig to cover thier scant. wear gogles and cover your mouth and nose. I got this from a Jerry Baker book and it worked for me.
If you cann't stand my spelling use the ingore feature.

I'm having the same problem. Some azz dropped off a declawed female in my yard. Teh stupid neighbors made the mistake of feeding it and now it won't go away.
I shot it with my son's Daisy so now it won't come within earshot of me. Everytime my kids are out, it comes out to play. Now I have a big stray tom sniffing around.
I'm going the live trap route and then who knows.

I have heard that chili powder works.....but I like Gotlost's recipe!
I don't like the anti-freeze idea cuz it doesn't target JUST the intended victim.....

Police charged Archer with cruelty to animals. So now it is cruelty to animals to inflict an instant death via a bullet? I'd like to be on that jury! Charge him with unlawful discharge of a firearm, or sue him for the value of the animal. Those are reasonable responses.
