I joined a group on Facebook called California Big Game Hunters yesterday because I wanted to talk about California banning the import of African big game trophies.
This measure passed the other day by a 5 to 1 margin.




I swear to God, 50% of the reactions were all for the ban....in fact the moderators put a lock on the post preventing further comment.



Then....I made a poster on that page that said.

CAN WE HAVE A CALM, RATIONAL DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW POLITICS AFFECT YOUR HUNTING AND GUN RIGHTS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA?

THEY REMOVED IT.

Mind you this is a group called California big game hunters with several thousand members.
I will most likely never be able to hunt Africa, but by God I stand strongly with All hunters and All gun owners.
This division will certainly be the end of us.

I used to really get pissed when I would hear people refer to us as California conservatives...like we are lightweight pussy conservatives....but I am truly starting to believe it is true for the most part....this is just pathetic.

According the the wording of the law I read, if you already possess those things on the banned list, AND have a certificate from the USFW from prior to 1 Jan 2021, you are allowed to possess those banned items.

Never heard of any publicly owned lakes/reservoirs "shut down". The may have instituted vessel inspections and cleaning stations, maybe a short shut down until they could get those in place. But I never heard of any shut. Maybe during certain seasons, for certain species. Then again, I've been mistaken.

Private lakes/reservoirs, some owned by power and water companies have been closed for years and years.

Don;t know when it was instituted, maybe one of our African hunters can let us know, but I believe there's been an import law for a few years (20+?) that requires USFW certification and/or inspection. Again, I've been mistaken before and will likely be again someday.

Yep, CITES permit, and CITES is an international entity. Unless things have changed in the last year, you could import all 3 depending on which African country you hunted. Conservation Force has been extremely instrumental in helping folks with all the paperwork, legalities, etc.

had to go out to the Clear Lake NWR one day, drove out a road from Tule Lake on the north end of the garden. Got through a cattle guard a bit past the edge of farmland and society (such as it is in Tule Lake ), and a small bachelor herd crossed the road. Early in the year, not much in the way of antlers yet. But, having just spent 7 or so years in blacktail territory over on the coast, and grown up with desert mulies in SoCal, I thought someone had lost some real mules. Them dudes had some decent size bodies.

There are some pretty nice racks from the old days around town. That museum on the South end of town has some nice ones, some of the stores here too.

Always have told my wife that if she was truly rich, as in megabucks, I'd have no problem being a kept man.

Of course, I'd likely do all I could to have a few places to stay outside this State.

Joint account yes, but getting the funds out for hunting trips can be difficult to do if one wants to instill harmony in the relationship.

Not ALL funds of ours go in the joint account. That was established early on. Eggs in one basket type of thing maybe?

Found this post rather entertaining. If you all only knew how many east and west coasters have been lost on my properties.........requiring search by me after dark, when they didn't show.

Most couldn't get a hold of me, because no cell service down in a valley.

Also, most don't know east from west, even on a sunny day. When you start talking directions......deer in headlights look.

I always tell them to fire 3 arrows in the air when they get lost........they nod.

We started out putting reflectors 100 yards apart.......now we put them 25-30 yards apart.

Many have problems with barbwire fences.......and gravel roads too.

I married her for her smarts.

Had nothing to with the fact that the first time I saw her she walked into the lecture hall in very tight spandex running pants and sat down basically in front of me, or that after getting to know her while studying that SHE was the pretty gal in the picture of the student activities flyer that taught belly dance, or the fact that she loved my dog, knows as much or more biology than I do, and could live as frugally as I had to while in school.

Nope, it was all for her smarts.

I've had this discussion with buds over the years. My answer hasn't changed. Put her coin in a trust for the kids for college, or toys. Pride is a hard thing, but necessary IMHO.

Luckily (or not?) ain't been an issue here. One pot everything goes into. Lean or fat still one pot. If she won't live with me on what I make then she isn't worth having.

I wouldn't be able to be a kept man living off someone else's funds. Just doesn't sit well.

if, in the course of life, you ran into a gal who was "independently wealthy" and you two got together, you would ask her to put all her money in a trust for the kids (we don't have that issue, both in our 40s when we met) and then ask her to live on what you make? Even if she asked you to move in with her in her mansion if S FL (you could visit 'flave there!) for part of the year and live in a nice "cabin" in MT during hunting season?

The first few years together we struggled some, then I got the good job, paid for the higher ticket items like health insurance, getting cars repaired, down payment on our first new car together. Eventually her career caught up and passed mine and she took over some of that stuff.

We both agreed, if we ever hit the PowerBall for big bucks though, we'd take jobs or volunteer with things we really enjoyed and help our siblings and such. Money is to enjoy.........................after the bills are paid that is!
