I joined a group on Facebook called California Big Game Hunters yesterday because I wanted to talk about California banning the import of African big game trophies. This measure passed the other day by a 5 to 1 margin.
I swear to God, 50% of the reactions were all for the ban....in fact the moderators put a lock on the post preventing further comment.
Then....I made a poster on that page that said.
CAN WE HAVE A CALM, RATIONAL DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW POLITICS AFFECT YOUR HUNTING AND GUN RIGHTS IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA?
THEY REMOVED IT.
Mind you this is a group called California big game hunters with several thousand members. I will most likely never be able to hunt Africa, but by God I stand strongly with All hunters and All gun owners. This division will certainly be the end of us.
California brainwashes the fu gg out of people from a very early age. I used to really get pissed when I would hear people refer to us as California conservatives...like we are lightweight pussy conservatives....but I am truly starting to believe it is true for the most part....this is just pathetic. I'm so ashamed of where I live and understand the dislike of people from this state.
OP, you sound like me several years back when I came to the realization just how many "hunters" favor 2A limitations. And severe limitations at that. Pretty deep feeling of betrayal.

Strong suspicion that more than a few 24HCF members support the trophy ban as well....division will be the end of us.
If social unrest reaches my rural area, I had planned on bagging a few African heads for display purposes. Rethinking that in view of this change, I suppose I should just bury them? Grin.

Because they think that certain limitations will mollify and cause the rabid left to abate their confiscation efforts.
Sad but exactly why the populace of few, if any, Red states welcome transplants from California.
I've always thought you were alright Sal, I've also always thought it to bad you were stuck where you are.
It's bad here. I have a few extremey conservative, extremely avid hunting friends left here, but most have moved away. I have a great home, job and family. I'm still not ready to blow all of that up and move into a studio apartment in Idaho quite yet, but Im getting really tired.

Sal...I know thats all been hashed out here numerous times before...too bad you aren't a bit younger.
I escaped the east right out of college, got to Montana and instantly decided I'd shovel horse schitt for $2 an hour if thats what allowed me to stay here...
Sal you seem to be a good guy and hunter. I hate the crazy politics of your state. I know this would be tough for a lot of folks because of family and jobs etc, but I'd get the hell outta California. I would fight to change the system for a time but if my freedoms and beliefs didn't matter, I'm gone. Life's too short!
I don't suggest that people from Liberal states move anymore. If they can't figger that out for themselves, most likely they'll just drag a bunch of Liberal cooties along to wherever they move. This especially applies to Libs who just want to pay fewer taxes. They are fine with all the craziness, they just don't want to pay for it.

California is so screwed up now.
It is sad that hunters cannot stick together. We are our own worst enemies.

I’m not one of them, but we are already cooked, and I don’t mean CA, I mean the whole fugging country. We let liberals take control of academia in every state, it’s only one more generation away until liberals have complete control over remaining conservatives. Everybody complains about it, but nobody does anything to stop it.
Well said memtb, but a lot of fire members are again painting with a broad brush. People and their beliefs are not defined by ink lines on paper maps. The problem is more clearly defined by social values, namely, urban vs rural. Because the great shift in values is not confined to California, it's happening in greater or lesser degrees in every state. Look at the recent craziness of the governess of Wisconsin(edit Michigan, I'm a dumbshit), she and Newsom are joined at the hip it seems. At least in California, we can blame some of it on the massive latino "free stuff" voting block, putting these socialists in power.
interesting in that the pic you put up shows a Feb date.
I don't follow FB, or African hunting much, so I never knew that was coming up in the Legislature.
Going to have to look into it, but I have a very strong suspicion our local reps voted against it. Just so MIKEWEINER knows that this part of the State is still cool. We just happen to live within the borders of another world.
Its a 'feel good' measure....have your trophies shipped nearby out of state...go pick them up yourself.
Who exactly is gonna enforce it...especially with police being defunded..
Of course the answer is always to move the hell out of there to someplace in America...
Nyalubwe,
This is of course another example of California acting as a mini Nanny State and exhibiting intolerance to any idea they don't like.
They claim tolerance the way posters claimed Maoand Stalin loved their people. They are tolerant of everything they belive in and hold dear and want to eliminate or suppress everything they find objectionable or annoying.
The School teacher approach to governance has no provision for personal freedom, only the collective as defined by government. Sound like anything we fought against in 20th Century? How'd that USSR thing end?
Werner's got it made, just think of Iowa bacon, topped with a fresh sliced Iowa tornado. Valsdad just escaped by one vowel of living in the shadow of the WERNER Mtns. Good God that was close.
To the best of my knowledge, and superior googlefu, it appears at this time (unless they voted on it and it hasn't hit the Leg webiste yet), this bill hasn't passed the Assembly yet. Of course, FB may be ahead of this .gov website.
Quote
06/29/20 Referred to Com. on W., P., & W. 06/26/20 In Assembly. Read first time. Held at Desk. 06/26/20 Read third time. Passed. (Ayes 29. Noes 8.) Ordered to the Assembly.
Not that there's any chance in hell the ruling party won't pass it.
As suspected, our State Senator voted Nay.
What's a fella to do? Move to f'n IOWA?
Can I bring some good Cali rules there? Like clean air and water? (it's likely every car sold there already complies to CA regs, easier on the mfg that way)
If liberals flocked to CA when it was conservative, and changed the politics, as they have done in NM, AZ, CO etc, why do we NEVER hear of conservatives doing the same to liberal states?
Because the number of liberals is growing much faster do to immigration and academia, better come to terms with it, cuz nothing is being done about either.
What are you supposed to do if you own a pair of elephant tusks that you have shot? Federal law says you're allowed to keep them (each one has a code on it) but not allowed to transfer ownership. Are you supposed to throw them away?
BTW: This is just the start. Pretty soon thy'll outlaw bear hunting, then elk, then...

Yep, you think hunter numbers are down now? Give it another 25 years. Fishing will come next.

The Fed .gov along with big ag changed the complexion of the states you mention and that's where all the Dem voting comes from anywhere in the Southwest including Texas. You have a big native black bloc in the South along with transplanted Yankees who love the weather. Most of the problems in this country come from unlimited immigration, whether it be illegal or legal. Panty-waisted conservatives are as much to blame as anybody, feeling sorry for those who come from other countries and feeling that they should have a shot at the American dream. Well, they will and many of y'alls kids won't because they will. Another was cheap labor that the Republicans are always in favor of.

Unless I'm mistaken, y'all already have big lakes in norcal where no fishing is allowed.

California Conservative...it's not just a name.
Say again? You think all the liberals that flocked to CO did so to work in big Ag and the federal government? Hmm, why did they flock to CA, not seeing many white liberals out in big Ag in CA? I mean there are way more illegal immigrants working construction now, then in Ag.
Another thing to the OP...you say you've got a great job. Unless I'm mistaken, you've said before that your wife does too. Look at what Ingwe said about $2 an hour. If you live where people vote conservative, it will likely cost you money in your job. You also may not be living in some paradise. Places where people are still conservative are generally places that are real hot, real cold or maybe both and don't pay shixt for wages. Sometimes they have good hunting and/or fishing, sometimes not. The metro areas and highly populated states are the places that pay up and also the places you will be inundated with people who vote Commie and many times don't look like you or maybe even speak your language.

According the the wording of the law I read, if you already possess those things on the banned list, AND have a certificate from the USFW from prior to 1 Jan 2021, you are allowed to possess those banned items.
Bona fide educational institutions also.
CA banned bear hunting with dogs many years ago. Banned all lion hunting. Can hunt but not sell bobcat pelts. All that kinda sucks. A lot.

The only ones I know of are lakes that were completely shut down because of the Chinese Muscles, not because of anti-fishing groups. But they will try anything to force veganism on society.

Yeah but nobody required any certificate from the USFW to conform to the law, and none were offered, unless this is very recent. Catch 22.

True, for some reason liberals are always willing to pull up stakes and move to where the weather is nice, and the jobs pay, only thing that seems to get conservatives to pull up stakes, is running from liberals.

Never heard of any publicly owned lakes/reservoirs "shut down". The may have instituted vessel inspections and cleaning stations, maybe a short shut down until they could get those in place. But I never heard of any shut. Maybe during certain seasons, for certain species. Then again, I've been mistaken.
Private lakes/reservoirs, some owned by power and water companies have been closed for years and years.

Don;t know when it was instituted, maybe one of our African hunters can let us know, but I believe there's been an import law for a few years (20+?) that requires USFW certification and/or inspection. Again, I've been mistaken before and will likely be again someday.
Aren't you the person that jumps all over others for criticizing Kalifornians? just curious

if I come up for a visit, don't sell me any homegrown rabbit skins or meat. Or beef, or wheat.
Probably some sort of rule against it.
I wouldn't want your neighbors to be turned into informants.
PS does MT have strict rules on selling locally butchered meat? Only for family consumption unless there's an inspector on site?
Hahaha! You almost got me there Comrade!
I had a big reply typed out................nyet!
I know nothing! You will never get me to talk..............
Don't get me wrong, Id take Montana a million times over where I live now, but I was there last week and the libs, hipsters and metrosexuals I saw overwhelming Bozeman and Belgrade was so disheartening, it looked like San Francisco. The fact that that region along with Butte and Missoula were able to put a Democrat in as Governor is so sad. I agree with several prior posters, that the mentors of liberalism found their secret weapon many years ago in the indoctrination of America's youth through academia.
If "possession" is illegal with no "grandfather" clause, how can the State suddenly outlaw what has been hanging on private walls for years, even decades?
Are the possum cops gonna slip around, peeking in windows, looking for trophies hanging on walls?
Or do the libs organize a band of "brown shirts" to rat out family and neighbors with trophies?
And who's gonna compensate for seized property? Big bucks, especially with major collections.
Or, how does one with trophies deal with possession of newly declared contraband?
I see a bunch of legal issues in all this feel good, P.C. mania. Ya reckon they've thought this thru, or is this just another feel good, knee jerk exercise without consideration of ultimate consequences.

To import certain African animals you need a CITES permit. That is what was needed to bring my Blesbok over.
Some animals like lion, elephant and I think leopard cannot be imported at all.
Most California conservatives are moderate liberals. They only seem conservative while living in a sea of socialist. When they move somewhere conservative they immediately appear as what they really are , liberals. They immediately vote for a liberal agenda and begin the process of turning a once nice conservative area into a liberal chithole on its way to becoming a socialist hellhole.

How many Californians do you know? In total?
Just to check how you can declare " Most" conservatives here are liberals, of the moderate persuasion.
(if you had said "Many" instead of "Most" it might have carried more weight without seeing the numbers behind your opinion)

Yep, CITES permit, and CITES is an international entity. Unless things have changed in the last year, you could import all 3 depending on which African country you hunted. Conservation Force has been extremely instrumental in helping folks with all the paperwork, legalities, etc.
But......Valsdad can see mountains out his front door.
Yes, I can.
Not just corn. Or tornadoes.
Heck, I could (used to) see mountains from where I sit now. And forest down in the Kenai River valley was lovely when the colors came on in the fall. Damned trees are now blocking the view of the forest.
I'd restore the view (4 hours, tops, excepting the cleanup) , but State Parks would be all over my ass..... .
Well, Jack (head ranger) didn't have any problem cutting more than a thousand trees to maintain the view from the headquarters building a few hundred yards away, so that was "in the State's interest" as he put it.
Funny how that works...
Back to the OP. Law bans "import" but not "possession" - is that right?
How is "import" defined? International or inter-state differences? If International paperwork is in order, can one not "import" the thing to a neighboring state and then bring it home? Who is to know whether that head on the wall does or does not not have CA "approval" - grandfathered in - if one keeps his trap shut. U-haul is rather anonamous.... as is 2 a,m. for the unloading in decent neighborhoods. Mostly.
If one can afford Safari, why not a secret underground bunker- I mean trophyroom - er, bomb shelter. . Stocked, of course, for the zombie apocolypse....

Yes, hyena hides and mounts are just the thing for fighting off the zombie hordes!
They can see the mountains from their front porch.
Cool.
Liberals have no problem with government over-reach, til it costs too much. They’ll vote for it again, where it’s cheaper.
Most are hoping to get a ‘Covid’ bailout.......to cover their unfunded government pension liabilities.
Let stupid hurt. No bailout.

Can we take away their right to vote, when they move?
A sort of ‘felony’ relocation charge?
A good question for Tarquin.

In 2008, its voters propelled Barack Obama to the White House, as an overwhelmingly white state validated the candidacy of the first black president. A year later, Iowa’s Supreme Court sanctioned same-sex marriage, adding a voice of Midwestern sensibility to a national shift in public sentiment. In 2012, Iowa backed Obama again.

Iowans unseated two Republican U.S. House members — and nearly a third — in 2018 during midterm elections where more Iowa voters in the aggregate chose a Democrat for federal office for the first time in a decade.
In doing so, Iowans sent the state’s first Democratic women to Congress: Cindy Axne, who dominated Des Moines and its suburbs, and Abby Finkenauer, who won in several working-class counties Trump carried.

“I don’t believe it was temporary,” Iowa State University economist David Swenson said of Democrats’ 2018 gains in suburban Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. “I think it is the inexorable outcome of demographic and educational shifts that have been going on.”
Ouch, Iowa going the way of California? Going to be dominated by the bigger metro areas?
Better be ready MIKE. Pretty soon, granola gonna be served to them Iowa school children instead of Corn Flakes.
Don't be scared, those libs in Iowa aren't prone to butt raping......................................yet.
OH, and when that all comes to pass.........................................I'll still be able to see a real mountain range from my porch.

Reagan fit that "California Conservative " definition. A 15 day waiting period, that was later reduced to 10 days for firearms purchases and a moratorium on mountain lion hunting. A HIGHLY Overrated "conservative" as far as I'm concerned.

Where did either of us say we don't have a problem with it?
Should we gather those of us from the red areas of the state and march on Sacramento and physically remove the Legislators we don't like from office?
Maybe if a few million of you "conservatives" would move to these places with mountains, you could help us change the politics here. Instead of telling us to move..........but not to your state.

Those of us who lived here during his administration know that.
Maybe you could call Rick again, the Californian that owns this site and have him reduce your post count so you don't look like such a narcissistic sociopath. You're up to 82,142 posts and have only been here since 2007. Not that that's indicative of a mental disorder or anything...🤣

The correct word would have been "Indoctrination".
When I stated you and fatman69 were living in an increasingly idiotic state, who referenced California?

I don't suggest that people from Liberal states move anymore. If they can't figger that out for themselves, most likely they'll just drag a bunch of Liberal cooties along to wherever they move. This especially applies to Libs who just want to pay fewer taxes. They are fine with all the craziness, they just don't want to pay for it.
Ahh. You've been to Florida.
We've got 1000 people a day crossing our northern border, running from the taxes in the liberal pigstys they helped create in NY, NJ, MA, MD, CT, etc.
I love New York, but I left it 37 years ago because of the gun laws, been in Texas ever since. Meanwhile what I left has been reaching out for me, first through the Federal Government, and then by changing demographics.
This African trophy ban is complete friggin idiocy, and will hasten the demise of what’s left of wild Africa.
It chills me tho because I know that California ain’t gonna be the only one, and for those states it doesn’t happen the Feds will take care of that with the next Democrat administration.

Birdie, there are those here who might believe there will never be another Dem administration, and that their States won't turn Blue and pass CA like laws.
Funny, that your interests and AK's interests do not overlap in regards to your views, eh?
But, the Headquarters bldg likely gets some visitors, big wigs of a sort, now and again, so the view must be "purty" for them.
If they do, it's real low profile. and it is a great view- just a short walk away. I'm thinking the way to go is collect a few million spruce bark beetles and seed the area.....
Actually, they are already in the neighborhood. Maybe if I just gouge the trees a little? Starting with that monster 15 feet off my deck stairs. Wife loves it tho. I never should have saved the puny little fart 31 years ago when we moved in. And cleared around it, and fertilized it, and watered it.
Seemed like a good idea at the time..... another lesson in "food, water, shelter, space."...
And then, there are those that would 'wish' their misfortune on everyone else.....

MIKE,
Hope your day is going well, ours is just starting.
wishing involves desire.
Re: my misfortune. Nope, no desire for anyone else to have it visited upon themselves..............or others for that matter.
Acceptance though............that's living in reality................even in Iowa
The Federal Government is also “filled with liberal insanity”. Do you still pay federal income taxes...? If you do, then you are supporting the liberal agenda through the federal income taxes that you pay.

California is just a larger copy of Massachusetts, Taxachusetts, both full of bleeding heart liberals that are so misinformed that it boggles the mind. When Massachusetts banned leg hold and possession of such traps back in the early 90’s I made it my goal to piss ‘em Off. I hung all of my traps on the front of my shed in full display so ALL could see them. NOTHING! Not one comment from law enforcement, town cake eaters, neighbors....nothing. Therefore, I say piss on them! Hold onto your property whether it be mounts, guns, knives, etc. California and all the rest of the libtard states can go to hell. MTG
Of course you are not STUCK, no one is. But when you're name isn't on the deed it's good to tow the line. You are a true patriot.
Dflave is like that loudmouth punk on the playground that just don't shut up until you punch him in the mouth.
That's not true.I've been punched a bunch of times.
Sex play doesn't count.
Even with the velvet covered handcuffs.
Don't make it kinky. The Iowa boys might start drooling.
Yeah, maybe what's considered kinky there is just a normal evening at home here! Kinda like what they consider "hunting" in the back forty. Oughta get them over to the back side of the Sierras for awhile, eh?
Drop them off somewhere in the Warners and say "go kill Bambi".
That area ain't no 100 acre wood Christopher Robin.

Well, at least if they get dropped off in the Warners, they likely could get out. Just follow the sun until they get to 395, right? Then turn N or S to Alturas or Susanville. It would be a bit of a walk from the Wilderness Area up there though.
There's a few places I can think of that might be worse than the Warners. Maybe even a juniper thicket up on the Devil's Garden during a grey, cloudy, dreary, snowy day where one can't tell where the sun is. If they have map and compass skills they'll be OK though............................Maybe?
which begs the question. Is there even a Wilderness area in Iowa?
Had a job up this way, working out of K falls, doing some water survey type stuff, way back in 98.
had to go out to the Clear Lake NWR one day, drove out a road from Tule Lake on the north end of the garden. Got through a cattle guard a bit past the edge of farmland and society (such as it is in Tule Lake ), and a small bachelor herd crossed the road. Early in the year, not much in the way of antlers yet. But, having just spent 7 or so years in blacktail territory over on the coast, and grown up with desert mulies in SoCal, I thought someone had lost some real mules. Them dudes had some decent size bodies.
There are some pretty nice racks from the old days around town. That museum on the South end of town has some nice ones, some of the stores here too.
The Lifesize Brown Bear and Grizzly amongst the others in my custom trophy room beg to differ...🤣 Even living in California, I have it a lot better than a lot you dflave ballwashers. GFY.

Cool story bro.
Unless you shot them in CA I'm not sure of your point.
Did your wife paid for you to go these on out of state trophy hunts?

Who's begging? Not me lmao
Is your name on your house deed?
Will be when it's paid off
Why wouldn't it be? Same as every title or paper of consequence.
Only one surname in this house to boot. No cunnty hyphens either if that's the next question.

I'm sure it is, but you're not Salmonella from California. Ask her who's name is on the inherited house deed. Never not funny
If a guy is fortunate enough to have his wife’s income help support his endeavors, which probably applies to many, if not most here, therefore his exploits, exceptional as they may be, have no validity?

Always have told my wife that if she was truly rich, as in megabucks, I'd have no problem being a kept man.
Of course, I'd likely do all I could to have a few places to stay outside this State.
One in AZ, one in MT, two in AK, maybe one in the Northeast. A man can't hunt western game only you know.

I'm pretty sure my marriage vows at least implied that all funds were to go into a joint bank account. I mean compared to everything else promised that seemed a minor detail

Joint account yes, but getting the funds out for hunting trips can be difficult to do if one wants to instill harmony in the relationship.
Not ALL funds of ours go in the joint account. That was established early on. Eggs in one basket type of thing maybe?
Must be working. Been together since '96, married since '99.
Found this post rather entertaining. If you all only knew how many east and west coasters have been lost on my properties.........requiring search by me after dark, when they didn't show.
Most couldn't get a hold of me, because no cell service down in a valley.
Also, most don't know east from west, even on a sunny day. When you start talking directions......deer in headlights look.
Flat land, you bet.
I always tell them to fire 3 arrows in the air when they get lost........they nod.
We started out putting reflectors 100 yards apart.......now we put them 25-30 yards apart.
Many have problems with barbwire fences.......and gravel roads too.

Had nothing to with the fact that the first time I saw her she walked into the lecture hall in very tight spandex running pants and sat down basically in front of me, or that after getting to know her while studying that SHE was the pretty gal in the picture of the student activities flyer that taught belly dance, or the fact that she loved my dog, knows as much or more biology than I do, and could live as frugally as I had to while in school.

I've had this discussion with buds over the years. My answer hasn't changed. Put her coin in a trust for the kids for college, or toys. Pride is a hard thing, but necessary IMHO.
Luckily (or not?) ain't been an issue here. One pot everything goes into. Lean or fat still one pot. If she won't live with me on what I make then she isn't worth having.
I wouldn't be able to be a kept man living off someone else's funds. Just doesn't sit well.

BGG,
if, in the course of life, you ran into a gal who was "independently wealthy" and you two got together, you would ask her to put all her money in a trust for the kids (we don't have that issue, both in our 40s when we met) and then ask her to live on what you make? Even if she asked you to move in with her in her mansion if S FL (you could visit 'flave there!) for part of the year and live in a nice "cabin" in MT during hunting season?
The first few years together we struggled some, then I got the good job, paid for the higher ticket items like health insurance, getting cars repaired, down payment on our first new car together. Eventually her career caught up and passed mine and she took over some of that stuff.
We both agreed, if we ever hit the PowerBall for big bucks though, we'd take jobs or volunteer with things we really enjoyed and help our siblings and such. Money is to enjoy.........................after the bills are paid that is!

I shall answer this, I am married to my wife and what is mine is her's...and vice versa.
Unless the wife in question is a bitch in which case what is her's is mine and what is mine is my own.

I tend to agree.

I kinda like her so I hang around even though I have to accept her bringing peanut butter across my threshold. I hate that stuff.

Ahh...you cannot cook worth a damn either.
My Daughter told my wife that if she ever left we would just follow her so we don't starve.
