Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the liberal icon who served on the Supreme Court since 1993 and who crusaded for women’s rights before that, died on Friday at the age of 87.

Ginsburg, who was once passed over for a clerkship on the Supreme Court because of her gender, was the second woman to sit on the nation’s highest court after Sandra Day O’Connor, and the first Jewish woman to do so. President Bill Clinton nominated her to the Supreme Court in 1993 after she had served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 1980. From 2006 until 2009, she was the only woman on the Supreme Court.

Ginsburg’s opinions for the court were influential, regardless of whether she was writing for the majority or dissenting. In the 2007 case Lilly Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., for example, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that a woman could not sue her former employer for paying her male counterparts more than her because she had not filed suit claiming discrimination within a 180-day period required by law. In an opinion joined by three other justices, dissented vociferously, arguing that such a requirement was nonsensical because it might take a female employee longer than 180 days to find out that she was being paid less than her male counterparts. In her dissent, Ginsburg directly appealed to Congress to change the law.

Trump should nominate her replacement in the morning and McConnel ram it through before the election. Lots of pressure to bring to bear on Collins who would absolutely have to vote yes to survive. She would completely alienate the base with any hesitation. This is only a theory of mine. I've thought for the past 4 years that she made a huge strategic mistake. If she was smart about it, she should have retired while Obama was in office, say 2015 or before. But she didn't and then Scalia died so she had to hang in there. She probably figured that it wasn't a problem because she felt, like most of the Dems, that Hillary would win. If Hillary had won, I'm sure that she would have retired in 2017 as soon as they replaced Scalia. But Hillary didn't win, so she was screwed and she's been hanging in there in hopes that Trump will lose in November. She didn't make it long enough.

If you recall, there was serious talk of her resigning during Obongo’s last term so that the Kenyan could appoint a young, fresh Communist Judge who would be on the Court for the next 20 or 30 years. She refused to go along with the plan. At least now we have a shot ....

A partisan hack. Most of us have been around someone who is dying of cancer. It is a long, grim process. The last month, maybe the last 3 months of that person's life they are in very bad shape and not in full possession of their mental abilities.
