Went to an eye doc appointment this morning and as the nurse was doing the initial exam, she asked if I had taken a covid shot. Asked her why she was wanting to know and she replied that the insurance companies were wanting the info. Told her that it was none of her or the ins. co. business and it had nothing to do with my eye exam.

When the dr. came in, she told him I had refused to answer the question about the covid shot and went on to tell him that I said 'It was none of their business'. Now doc has known me for 60 years, so he told her not to worry about it and changed the conversation to hunting and fishing. You shoulda seen the look on the nurses face, you'd have thought she had been slapped or something. As I walked out of the room, I heard doc tell her that he wasn't surprised at my answer..... then the door closed all the way and I couldn't hear anymore.

Q: “Do you have guns in your home?”

A: “No. I keep them with me at all times.”

Went for lunch with Slavyanka. We have to sign in and give a phone number to eat in a restaurant. Usually I'll put "John Smith" and a fake number.

Today I saw someone had put "Eternity". So I put the " ditto sign and a fake number.

Just out of curiosity, why would you care if they knew this or not? If you had gotten the vaccine, it would already be in a database somewhere. Would you have refused to answer if they asked about a flu shot or the shingles vacc? Would you have told your GP if she had asked? Not sure why this was a big deal. If you've known the doc for 60 years, why not ask him why they want the info?

Long ago when people paid for things with checks you would often be asked for ID and a major credit card. My father had a plastic card from "Major Credit Card" and used to give them that. I don't recall him ever being called on it.
I would say it was about 4-5 years back. My Dr. retired and I had to find another Dr. My wife talked me into going to Kelsy Sebold (SP).

So I did, as I was signing up, one of the pages had to do medical but a page full gun ownership questions. I was like no, none of their business. When it got in front of the Dr. who I had no idea who it was be. It was a black female Dr. I made it clear my gun ownership was none of their business. She said I really needed to fill it out, insurance required it. I started to get up and leave and she changed her tune.

So they did the normal stuff for annual check up. In the follow up Dr. said the nomal, loose weight etc. About 15 months later they sent me an email and said based on those tests I needed addtional test on kidneys, or something needed to be looked at. They called me a few days later. I was like, lets see you call me over a year later and tell me I have a problem. I said here is the problem, you are not busy and trying to print money. I ain't coming back. I found a local private dr. and problem solved.

HIPPA does not have anything to do with this example. Why not just a polite " I'd prefer not to say", and just go on with the exam. The Doc could ask again if it were important. It seems like everybody's walking around with a chip on their shoulder.

I believe that yes, even at the doctor, one has the right not to divulge something, e.g. revealing to the nurse you do or do not own firearms, or discussing things that have nothing to do with the office visit.

I will say one time i was short with a lady at the dentist's office asking me all kinds of health questions, and i said, "i'm just here to have my teeth cleaned".

Most nurses I've encountered are basically wannabe doctors (my own sister was an RN) who never tire of lecturing how much education they have and how extraordinarily difficult their job is...mere mortals simply cannot comprehend it (another example of this phenomenon is school teachers). I promptly concur by agreeing that it takes tremendous brain power and skill to empty a bedpan. That usually shuts 'em up.

ouch

Asking about C19 shot at a doctor, any doctor, makes sense. It's a medically related item, they may be on the lookout for something.

Asking about guns, that's just stupid.

The only person I'd rather have on scene than a first responder is, MAYBE, an ER specialist doc or a trauma surgeon. Actually, I think the paramedic is tops in the field. Different skill sets apply. All have their place.

My late wife and I have always had very polite and caring nurses here in Boise. Grade A people.

I did run into something just yesterday I've never seen before when I had to see my internist who has been treating me for a blood clot in my leg. When I went to the registration desk to check in, the receptionist handed me an Ipad (or tablet) with questions about "thoughts of suicide." Stated that Idaho has the highest suicide rate in the nation, per capita. Every question was a "Yes" or "No" answer.

I.e. "Have you ever thought about committing suicide?" "No," but I wish I could have written, "Only when I hear Hillary and Harris screeching like dying coyotes." No place to write a response, more's the pity. wink

There were six questions in total, along the same lines as the above. "No" to all of them.

I guess I passed the "test" as I got in to see my doc.

I wonder what would have happened if I'd answered "Yes," to the questions? Possibly be in a padded cell today sitting on a smelly, soiled mattress, having stale coffee and a peanut butter sandwich for lunch. grin

Well done.
Insurance companies always want data to evaluate risk and thus set your premium based on risk.
I would expect that they may pay for it (hence the nurses reaction) I imagine it is actually protected under hippa regulations..
Remember hospitals received payments for covid diagnoses and ventilator prescriptions.

Never give out personal information without a good reason.

Knowing what I know, I am pretty sure this gal had an attitude or Oldman would have handled it differently. You tend to get treated the way you treat other people. It is true insurance companies are in control of health care and they tell medical professionals how they are allowed to treat patients. I know of several examples.
The PA I have been seeing is an ex-marine and I am pretty sure he was a medic who saw combat action. He is a no nonsense kind of guy and we have a pretty frank relationship. I get the impression he doesn't approve of a lot of what he is required to do. He asked if I ever had a flu shot. I told him no. He said they are about 60% effective and left it at that. I expect he will ask if I have taken a China flu shot. I intend to ask him why? It doesn't keep you from getting the China flu. It doesn't mean you don't have to wear a mask. It does t mean you can go out in public.
He and I get along pretty well after he knew the answer to my question about what do you call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his class in medical school?

You're not wrong about the inflated sense of how difficult their jobs is. To be fair though, they probably shut up when you counter with bed pans because they think you are probably on the spectrum. Bed pans, diapers, and piss jugs are CNA b.itch work. RN ain't touching that shidt.

Several people have asked about being rude. I never meant to imply that I was rude, I just told the girl that whether I took the covid shot or not, was none of their nor the insurance companies business. It has nothing to do with my eye exam. I was wearing my mask, as required. I wasn't upset, loud, or argumentative. I just refused to answer the question and told her why.

Maybe other people wouldn't answer her question and maybe they didn't tell her why. But when she goes home tonight, she won't have to wonder why I wouldn't answer the question.

While I was a paramedic I only had one doc ride along that was worth a chit. ER docs rely too much on other people to do the work. The one doc I'm speaking of always wanted tp be a fireman but family pressure took him to med school. His first ride out with us was supposed to be 4 hours. He stayed overnight. He had a blast. We let him do some PM stuff he said he didn't get to do much in the hospital. Most hospital people can't relate to kneeling in cat piss soaked carpet to intubate someone and they can't relate to extricating someone in pouring rain and then treating them after that.

When I walked into the dr office this morning, I saw a new receptionist, so I naturally walked up to her window. Took my mask down, made a face, and growled at her. Her eyes got big and she didn't know what to say. Other receptionist heard me and looked up to see who or what it was. She broke out in a grin and whispered to the new girl, "Dont pay any attention to him.... he's full of schit". New girl laughing so hard she like to have fell out of her chair. After the exam, I had to go back and make another appointment for 6 mths. New girl asked if Oct 1 would be ok? NO, NO, NO, NO... that's the first day of bow season! Both girls got a laugh out of that and the new girl asked about a later day in Oct. Again, NO, cause bow and squirrel season will be open. So I got a appt on Sept. 30.

They are rated 1st or 2nd in the nation. I want to be prepared when the issue comes up. You can't walk up to these hospitals and expect them to roll out the red carpet. You need to feed them often.

Possibly be in a padded cell today sitting on a smelly, soiled mattress, having stale coffee and a peanut butter sandwich for lunch. grin

L.W.

If they knew you had guns they'd have red flagged you and you'd be getting the 4am Swat Team visit.

Um, no. Your doc would likely discuss the issue with you in a genuine effort to save your life and spare your loved ones from a lifetime of pain and guilt. If you think otherwise, you should change doctors.

Those questions are government mandated, the doctor didn't think them up out of concern for you. I would never share any information about whether or not I owned firearms. Absolutely none of their business.

Government mandated? State level? No such mandate exists in my state, so it can’t be Federal. I don’t disagree with your reluctance to answer that question. I probably wouldn’t either.
You'd be amazed at the questions we as nurses are mandated to ask patients during triage/assessment. Most mandates come from the government or insurance companies.

I'm sure many possible questions are pertinent to the immediate need for treatment and I'm not opposed to answering those kinds of questions, but insurance companies like to fish for any info they can use to weasel out of paying for stuff. I won't answer any question I don't feel is warranted in the circumstance.

I warned my wife many years ago to answer NO questions regarding firearms. She understood completely and will not do it. Certain things are NONE of their forking business.

Actually, I’m familiar with your triage questions. I think in that setting some of them are not very useful. In a solid Dr-Patient relationship, the simple question “Have you had thoughts of death or self harm?”can be lifesaving.

Right or wrong a doctor or nurse is required to ask you some questions. You as a patient are not required to answer them.

Obviously it's best to be as much of an azzhole as you can be about their questions then go home and brag about how tuff you are on internet forums.
Do you ever feel like you want to hurt yourself?

Do you ever feel like you want to hurt others ?

Questions like these might be used to screen for a possible dangerous situation but by themselves are not diagnostic of anything. Affirmative answers should just lead to a more in depth discussion.
That's it mister...
The Gestapo nurse has put you as non compliant in the scamdemic data base.

Along with your 3rd grade permanent record entry they have on you.

You are done........

This must be how people get pulled in and become frequent posters. It’s 9:30 already and I’ve got stuff to do. Got some loads to put together to test on Sat. I won’t have time tomorrow due to Good Friday services, Oh well, could be a late night.

Yes, you are better things to do than everyone else that's posting on a thread in which you look like an ass.

Nice exit strategy lol.

Remember that time my nuts were big as a grapefruit and purple? LOL

I tell all my nurses that when the Ativan kicks in and the demerol bolus drop. I was a tell-all novel after that ketamine blast.

Look like an ass? it probably wouldn’t be the first time, but thanks for the constructive criticism. Your sentence didn’t really make sense, so I don’t understand where your opinion differs.

If I had to guess she went home laughing, but some people cant see the forest for the trees. The point I am trying to make is that at the eye doctor, I was asked about the covid shot. The two have nothing in common and its I think it's none of their business whether I have taken the shot or not. You can get your eyes examined, whether you've had the shot or not. It's not pertinent information. What the hell has the covid shot got to do with getting your eyes examined? They examined mine, without knowing the answer, so the answer to my own question is.... Nothing!

Just tell them NO. And if you have, NO again. I agree, it's not their business.

not for Randy, I'm speaking for me to answer YOUR question...

I find that question from the nurse personally offensive...If liberals are allowed to get their shorts in a knot, so are conservatives...

What makes them so damn more important...

They find me offensive, so I'll be offensive to them then...I mirror how people act toward me....
Lots of these replies are based on the fact that they do not know Randy. If they did, there would be no surprise in the answer. I like it. miles
