Just took 3rd party hosting off of users, have to pay upgrade to post on forums or blogs...I despise PB anyways.
Guys:
Photobucket also does not load over SSL or https, at least as of the time of this writing. That means that the pages on which PB-hosted images appear cannot be fully secured, which is one of the main reasons we went through the upgrade.
I have added some new hard drives with lots of space. Anything loading from 24hourcampfire servers WILL load over https using SSL encryption.
Upload your images here instead of photobucket. Get the URL. Paste the URL in image tags. Voila. Free pic hosting, secured.
We are going to be doing the same for avatars and old images, as we have to have to have to make sure we get SSL locks going forward.
Now that Photobucket is not free, it's time to move it here.

Actually, both.
If you use the "Full Editor" option under the reply box, you will find the attachment manager. There you can upload images.
Then, make sure the URL you are posting has https instead of http. Put it between image tags [img] and [/img], and you should be good to go.
The key to the secure page lock is that the URL is https and not http. Gotta have https.
Going to need some help also....

Fair enough...can we delete that image at any time in the future or is it a permanent fixture?
Has the file size limit been increased? In the past it was a very restrictive 100K if I recall correctly, to upload using the attachment manager.
I would say under normal circumstances it will stay up. One issue with older posts with images is the images get deleted or changed and then the thread/post often loses necessary content/context, so the default is to leave it up. However, I can always delete under special circumstances.
Also, within 24 hours you can edit post and delete the image that way as well.
Has the file size limit been increased? In the past it was a very restrictive 100K if I recall correctly, to upload using the attachment manager.
I can modify it. There do have to be some limits though. But we'll find a happy medium.
PB.........still works.........but still sucks..............
OK but check the SSL lock icon, on Firefox or Chrome it's on the top bar near the address window. Since that PB image is not being served over a secure connection (https), there is no lock. That's an issue on the modern www.
I have done all I can on the server side, but third-party images have to be served from https, and PB does not support it (yet).
I can get PB to work on my iPad, but not my laptop.

No doubt. As many photos as get posted, it would eat up hard drives awfully quick. In the past, I'd crop photos and save them to lower resolution, but too often it left pics too grainy to bother posting, so I established a PB account. PB has become too annoying though so I'll close that account and try a different image host. If I had to guess, a limit of 300K to 400K would probably work, but it should be relatively easy to test some pics and zero in on a sufficient limit pretty quickly.

Rick, thanks for all of your hard work. This sounds great because I think a lot of us are sick of PB. However, I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to computers. I'm mostly self taught. If it's not too much trouble, could you please give us some plain english instructions for dummies to load pictures? Do we just load the pictures one at a time on each post? Whereas with PB, we have a library to resource.
My first initial D for Dave.

When making a post, click the
"use full editor" button at the bottom. Once the "full editor" screen is open click the
"Attachment Manager" hyper-link at the bottom left corner of the screen (there's a paper clip icon next to it). Once you've clicked it, the Attachment File editor will open. You can then either drag and drop the image file from your pc's harddrive file, or you can click the
"Select a file to attach" button. You will have to navigate your PC's file tree to find the image file you want to attach. Select it and it will automatically upload and tell you when that is done. You can load up to 5 photos. Whenever you're finished, select/click the
"done" button. That's it.
The file will appear as a hyper-link in your post.
Users will have to click that link to view the photo .. unless you do this work around. Once you finish your post, click your attached image link which will open a new page and show the image. Copy that url/web address from the address bar at the top of your browser, in this example case it is:
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...nload/Number/44786/filename/Longhorn.jpg and paste it into the image tags. Do this by
editing your original post and click the
image icon/button which is to the right of the
smily face icon, or the 9th icon from left to right, at the top of the full editor screen. Paste the url/address into the box and click the
"Change Post" button at the bottom of the "Full Editor" screen. Now the image has been referenced so users won't have to click the hyper-link to see it.
OK, I just tried to click and drag a picture to the Attachment Manager and the file is too big. Not sure what to do.
The picture showed up on the screen, but too many MB's.
OK, I just tried to click and drag a picture to the Attachment Manager and the file is too big. Not sure what to do. Rick, a little help please.
Same for me, please
Rick may have to increase the max file size first.
Yea, I was looking at the properties of some random pictures. The ones I took with my camera are all over 2MB and the ones I took with my phone are over 4MB. Attachment Manager is limited to 97KB.

He'll alter it when time allows, in the mean time MS Paint will down size the photos...and you can upload them here.
Is there anyway we can upload our photo library from PB onto the fire, other than one at a time?
Should be able to hold control & click, highlight group of pictures...but would have to be under the max size download allowed.

I addressed that earlier with Rick in this thread. He will have to increase the limit. You will still probably have to reduce the resolution of your pic before uploading it though. Probably a good idea to save the reduced resolution photo as a new file and post that so you don't compromise your original pic's resolution. I edited my instruction post above to show how you can display the photo directly without readers having to click the hyper-link.

Thanks, I appreciate your help. Like I said, I'm an illiterate dumbass, so I'll have to play with it when I have more time. Right now I have to leave work and go home to drink beer.
There will be a few nitwits here that will tell you to get Ad Block!!
Yeah, photobucket sux ballz...
I downloaded all the photo's i had there just in case i hadn't retained a copy of 'em on any of my HDDs.
If they can't make their revenue budget with adverts, requiring a subscription is not a good alternative.

Thanks Rick
Thank goodness. I'd have 5 times the pics up if it not for photobucket BS.
You guys may need to adjust your camera file size default, or edit your pics. The file size limit with PB and the 'Fire is generous and has never been prob for me.

Seems like a lot of work but I can make it work. What are some of the other hosting websites for pictures other than PB?
I am looking at using PictureTrail. Seems to work in the tests I made this morning.

Gringo Locos instructions work well - Takes a little longer and looks like I'll need to do some sizing before posting so not as easy but it's an alternative.
Maybe I missed something but is there a photo album area to upload your pics to? I'd rather not create a post just to put images on that I might want to use elsewhere. I'd be fine paying a nominal fee for the privelege. Thanks, Bill

Is that free? I'm kind of a tight wad.
Read this whole thread. Got me curious, so went to PB and am testing a download.
Guess it still works for me, and i ain't paying for anything.

Mine were visible here yesterday. I got an email from them overnight about losing 3rd party hosting capabilities. They're gone from here today. So it does appear they're going about it piecemeal.

PB was the simple answer for many users on forums, they will lose all pictures including avatars...the downside to image hosts.
I got the e-mail from PB telling me I needed to upgrade in order to allow third party hosting. I clicked on the upgrade link to see how much it costs to upgrade. It's only $399.99. Such a deal.
I'll probably keep the PB account for a little while to see if it regains a little common sense. After that I'll cancel my account. I don't put anything there that I don't have on other storage media under my control.
That's why I started the thread
Every other site I have been a part of, has had member albums. This made it dead simple to post personal pics. Upload, link, post. Done.
I have never needed a third party host before.

I agree, and mentioned that since I joined,,,,but think it massively effects server size for individual files, and generally the Forum "owns" you picture once it's posted on line. This is the only forum out of 15 or so that I have to use a image host.
Photobucket will be the most hated, bankrupt site on the internet if they keep things this way.
For more than 10 years, the majority of people posting hosted pictures on any board on the internet has used them. Mostly for the reason of having 3 party hosting...
Now, 10 years of photos, instruction, tutorials, and priceless information throughout the internet will be lost because PB changed their game plan?As an example, here's a thread that's a couple years old.
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/10095256/1You can see how valuable it is now.
If I owned a website like this one, or any other site that archives valuable information that will be affected by all the PB BS, I'd be all over them like chicken on a Junebug.
Hope the PB people didn't like their jobs much. Hope their creditors got their money upfront as well, because I see any cashflow they have coming to a screeching halt.
The only private pics I can post at this time, are links to pics posted on other sites.
I deleted my account at PB this morning, screw them
Rick is expanding the max file size here, but the site will still own the picture...PB gave free image hosting hoping people used it, then force you to pay up...that's why the free site bombs you with advertising, they've made their money already and don't care if people bail.
Thus why I've always said we should have member photo albums here, even at a minimal charge.
I have somebody making changes to file limits gents. More later.
Rick
Another issue, or feature that could be useful, would be the ability to scale the display size so pics don't dominate the screen and make threads cumbersome to scroll through. A max limit at a minimum. I know that on some other forums an uploaded image will be displayed at a smaller size, then if clicked will display full size. That workaround I posted for displaying the linked image works, but it's a little tedious.
Guys:
Upload your images here instead of photobucket. Get the URL. Paste the URL in image tags. Voila. Free pic hosting, secured.

Wish I had an 11 year old grandson to explain that to me. Don't understand a bit of it.

Yep, pull your pictures if they have value and download to your computer...then delete pictures from PB, and dump the account..... If not they can display your pictures on their site, at their discretion.
I'm in the process of deleting all my PB pics.
Linked pictures destroy the flow of a thread
I'm in the process of deleting all my PB pics.
That's the smart play if you're not going to upgrade, take the pics before they can use them...I'm not paying $399 for a fkn image host my computer will do for free.
For those not computer savy, if you want extra hard drive space without slowing your older computer down...add an external drive(plug & play)and only put pictures on it. Then copy/paste/drag & drop/etc. to post pictures here and elsewhere. Simple to access, simple to add more pictures, low cost for extra space....many ways to do it really.
Linked pictures destroy the flow of a thread
Thanks for that lol...you got it tho
For some strange reason, Steelhead has made me feel like we should have popcorn on this thread...
John
anyway to delete pics on PB as a group, instead of one by one. if so I can't seem to figure it out.
never mind I just figured it out, when you select pics, you then get the delete option, but you have to select them first
click, click, click, click...delete
I have a 2T external drive I haven't even used yet, but that will not help with posting personal pics. They still need an address, and they get that when posted.
No, saved as jpg files, then dropped in your image manager(or hopefully member album)...you're good to go. You don't want to link to pics if possible, because someone "owns" them other than you

To delete quicker than doing it one pic at a time, highlight the folder your pics are in, then look to the right and down on the Photobucket page. There should be a menu that includes "delete" to erase the entire folder. If all your pics are in your "bucket", you'll need to drag and drop them into a new folder, then delete that folder.
links suck, even that link
Ha. Avatar restored. Screw PB.
So, FreeMe, tell us how you did that..
Let me see if I can post a picture from my Photobucket account.
Seems to work fine. No one tried to charge me for it, either.
13 years... was a good ride while it lasted. No more PB account for me.
So, FreeMe, tell us how you did that..
Just down size your original avatar to 80x80 max, and down load the avatar in your profile section straight from computer hard drive.
Seems to work fine. No one tried to charge me for it, either.
It's coming don't worry, I received notice yesterday...and locked out of pictures already that were posted.

What the heck is 3rd party hosting?
I hate being told I need to give up more info. As if we need them to do us a favor.
So I deleted all my photobucket pictures and they can keep their site. I acknowledge that I know next to nothing about the internet, but I do know that many sites are giving up all their info to the government and that alone is reason for me to not want to give in to this kind of manipulation.
So---------------- anyone know another site that is not run by jerks that can be used to post pictures?
3rd party hosting is when you post a link to a photobucket image on a website like this one.
Someone on another site today said the photobucket site was hacked. Apparently some are getting emails saying they need to pay $399.99 to unlock their accounts or something to that effect and enable 3rd party hosting.
I did some browsing and it looks like a $59.99 UPGRADE. I'm going to wait a few days and see what happens but free hosting on PB may be a thing of the past
testrun
I could not use the "open" function of the attachment feature, but a drag and drop of the *.jpg file did work for me.
Convoluted, but functional. Hope Photobucket comes around on this as it's a shame to lose the historic links. Some of Photobucket's direct links are still up. Either folks have the buy in accounts, or they've not gotten around to screwing the whole crowd yet.
This current process probably puts a bit more stress on Mr. Rick's system.
Thanks Gringo Loco,

Day 3
I join the ranks of those thoroughly unhappy (read: completely pissed off) about Botophucket's new business model. That being said, I find it interesting that, historically on the 'fire, if someone complains about the price of something, let's say gasoline, the immediate response is to rally the villagers, light torches, pile kindling around the stake, all the while emitting cries of, "If you don't like it, do your own prospecting, drill your own wells, build your own refinery, etc! Damn commie - what do you have against Capitalism?" In this instance, there seems to be the opposite response - interesting.

I have no problems with them charging, I have problems with their 'thief in the night' approach.

And their exorbitant hostage fee to get them back, a reasonable rate wouldn't have bothered me.

I did precisely that this AM. Now need to decide who/what I want to use in the future.
A couple thousand pics are now off of PB and I no longer have an account there. Good times
So far so good, but then again, I'm stupid, so who knows.
I might as a casual user still get my storage usage free, I just don't publish that much.
Photobucket offers free and subscription based (Plus) accounts. Free account users receive 2 GB of storage for photo and video uploads, 10 GB of transfers (which they call "bandwidth") per month for sharing and linking, and unlimited access to Photobucket’s editing, slideshow, and Story features. "Plus" accounts are structured into storage tiers and offer unlimited bandwidth, use of site features, and an advertisement free experience.[13]

Any chance that you or someone would walk us dinosaurs through how to download PB pics to our hard drive, and/or how to close an account there? I have been fiddling with it for an hour or so without achieving either.

Close your eyes and bad things won't happen to you.
Sounds kind of like sitting in a chair on the Titanic and as long as the water does not come up to the legs on my chair, I believe everything is OK and that the ship is not sinking.
Casual user? The only reason I joined PB was to post a photo once in awhile on a hunting site, and I was one of the first shut out.
Hang in there and let us know how long you can last with PB. It would be funny if you can escape their notice and keep doing for free what they now charge $400 for.

For those looking to transfer photos out of PH, that aren't real computer savvy...
1) Go to PB and select picture, right click on photo, save to your hard drive(C drive), or external hard drive, or flash drive.
or
2) Go to PB and select picture, transfer to Image Forum on Fire.
or
3) If you have same photos on computer, just delete photos from PB by folder
or
4) Go to PB and select pictures, and transfer to another image host such as:
https://postimage.io/But remember there is NO guarantee they won't up charge at some future date also.
or
5) Leave photos in PB, walk away and start over elsewhere.

See how long I can remember how to post from flickr!!
2) Go to PB and select picture, transfer to Image Forum on Fire.
OK, fine, but I thought the CF image system would only accept 6 files per each image post/gallery?
Is that correct or not?
If you can transfer unlimited files into CFm that's an easy solution.
MM
Campfire is fine for a few items or if you want to sell something and it's great that Rick set it up.
That said, I'd be looking elsewhere for a dedicated photo site that you can also lock.
Yeah, from what I can see of the CF system so far, I think you're right.
What is your current choice/recommendation for an alternative?
I've tried a couple of different ones over the years, but honestly, PB was always the easiest to deal with.

There's a few sites out there, and I agree privacy is critical...just because of family photos and such, no need opening your world to anyone that wants to surf your life.

I've always kept my pictures on a drive, so if PB shiet a month ago it would be no big deal. I'm in no hurry to 'upload' my shiet someplace else after the PB BS. I'll upload a particular pic or 2, as needed for the task at hand.
Yeah, I probably have 90% of what I've ever uploaded as well & the other 10% I didn't care enough about to save anyway.
I think I'll give IMGUR a try...........seems to get as many kudo's as anything else.
MM
If you want to do save your pics all at once or by albums go to Photobucket and click on the library or a folder you have created then look down to the bottom right of the screen and choose download. This will save that album to a zip file on your desktop or wherever you wish. Click on the zip file and your photos will appear in a folder.

Most forums do not require a URL location for picture posting, those that do usually provide a member folder(like Rick just added)...so generally there is ZERO reason to use a image host anyway. Store your photos on your hard drive/external hard drive/flash drive etc....and skip the image host option. I belong to a lot of different forums of varying hobbies, and the Fire was the only one that required me to use a host...download pics straight from your computer, from Facebook to Gunbroker...and now the Fire.
If you don't want to slow your older computer down, or clog up your potential available hard drive space just use a flashdrive($3-$7 anywhere) or an external drive ($50-$150)...there's a lot of ways to skin a cat.
Well I suppose, but from what I have read so far if you keep it under 2gigs you are free, I am using 1% of the 2 gigs.
But that being said I would rather post right to the forum minus the image hosting site and I am reading where Rick has enabled a "user pic storage", but I have not found how to access it, don't see it under "my stuff".
"those that do usually provide a member folder(like Rick just added)...so generally there is ZERO reason to use a image host anyway"
Little help?
Thanks

At the top of each section in the Fire, Rick has added a "blue" thread" with a link to Image Forum...for downloading pics, with a link
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...tructions-for-secure-images#Post12122182You can mass download to your Images, or just load quickly when posting a required picture...fast

OK..I wish I had a dollar for every time somebody walked away form you and thought "that guy is a dick".
Look inward Scott, find that inner-prick, and chase him away, you can do it...or you can just stay a dick your whole life.

In theory, anyway.
I'm trying to download everything I'd stored on photobucket. Once successful, I'll delete everything I stored there and get rid of my account, pretty much the same as others are apparently doing. I started the download early yesterday afternoon. 20 hours later, it's still running.
Between this and google shutting down panoramio, I need to rethink how I share ... or even whether I want to.

Barkoff, the only issue I have with the system is that you cannot delete your pictures after the 24 hour cut-off, I understand Rick has done this as it ensures relevance to the threads which helps with attracting new posters and maintaining forum continuity .
No problem, if you still have questions, let me know and I'll walk you thru a "click by click" trial run...putting your test post here on this thread.

This is true, but most forums "own" your photos after posting anyway...many won't allow you to delete posted photos, or they back up the site daily/weekly and "hold" your picture even if you delete it anyway....as you've stated retaining the integrity of the thread/flow. Thus why I don't post family or personal photos that have a "forever" life on the Internet, but also why forums have safety features that protect pictures(if you aren't a member of the site, you can't view the posted pictures).

Think I got it, then to add pics you click edit post and add more using the manager? Not sure if that is the right procedure, but it seems to be working.
Thanks again.
Correct, or work out of "Full Editor"...either way the drag feature is the only way mine seems to work, the double click doesn't for some reason. Once it's downloaded on manager, drag to post, then copy to Photo URL link button....about 3-5 seconds from start to finish.
Now I have to ask, once we post a picture to a thread or to our picture folder, would we be able to link to it to post on another site, or would that hurt Rick's bandwidth?
The 223AI thread is going to suffer the worst from all this.
Now I have to ask, once we post a picture to a thread or to our picture folder, would we be able to link to it to post on another site, or would that hurt Rick's bandwidth?
Bandwidth ain't free. Someone has to pay.
In the case of hosting images here, that would be Rick.

Yes you could link the post to another site/forum, but Rick may have locked "non-members" out from seeing the pictures(which is common)...but I'm not sure
EDIT: I just logged out of my account, and could still see the pictures...so for NOW the pics would be seen on other forums even as non-members, but that could easily change based on Rick's discretion.
Note: Remember if you have a Smart phone that you use for picture taking, the same thing can happen as PB just did to us...and their name is Cloud. Never allow a 3rd party to control your files/documents, take your phone pictures at will, then download to home computer at later date...that way you have a hard copy for future. That picture of the first buck your son shot, is very valuable and can't be replaced...don't allow Cloud to hold it hostage, because you won't get a warning in advance(ie Photobucket).

It takes real effort to keep the iCloud out of your life, around every turn Apple devices are trying to hook you like a crack dealer.

Pretty sure upon reflection Rick probably doesn't want to become photobucket lite.

Android devices use Cloud, so they're coming after you constantly...I download the important photos to my computer from the phone, the rest of them they can have.

I've been trying that off and on for two days and have retrieved nothing. It has never given me a folder nor given me an option as to where to download it to, and only once has it said that it was working on it. But nothing happened after that. I've tried it with large albums and with a small one with only 7 photos in it. Nada. I assume that the site is swamped with people trying to retrieve their photos. I'd only lose a very few pics, maybe half a dozen if I never get them back from PB. I'm just gonna erase as much as I can and close the account.
FWIW I never put anything on a computer that would hurt me much if hacked or stolen. No bank or other financial info, no electronic banking, and I trust the cloud or any other internet location even less than I do my own computer. If it ain't on an electronic device or system, it can't be hacked. Banks pressure me to do online banking and eventually they will force us to do that, but for now, no critical info of mine is on the net.
