I hate like hell to have to make a post like this, but Fieldgrade, aka Charlie, has passed away.
He had been battling a serious health issues for the past year and it finally got the best of him. He didn't like to advertise his health problems on the board and didn't want sympathy so it wasn't necessarily apparent to all what he was going through until just recently.
I will tell you that he fought hard, but things finally got to the point where quantity of life was gone and so was the quality. He chose to not seek anymore of the almost endless medical treatments and just let things take their course. After seeing him numerous times over the past few weeks, and watching the cancer suck him dry, I can't blame him either.
He would have been 68 on Christmas Day.
I know these discussion boards can be a strange way of knowing people, but Charlie was exactly as he portrayed himself. He was the real deal all the way. The type of guy you never could get ahead of because if you did a small favor for him he would double it in return. I know he was a bit taken aback when he read all the well wishes from his hospital stay a few weeks ago and he appreciated it.
If you know Charlie even a little, you know he was a dog man through and through. We made sure that Sally, his Mountain Cur, has a good home waiting for her.
Anyway, hoist a glass of your favorite beverage to the sky and wish Charlie well because he is healthy again and shooting grounds squirrels, chasing pheasants with his dogs; Pete and Sophie, trapping bobcats, and sitting on his deck and watching deer and hummingbirds.
I'm sad to hear that. Just thinking today, my 69th birthday, about the number of friends I've had that didn't make my age now. They are all sorely missed. I guess anyway we get up without a toe tag, is a good day.
Charlie and I were really good friends. He was a great guy and as you said Lonny anything you did for him he would tenfold you! I am speechless as I was just going to take a ride over there this weekend. Charlie loved talking about guns and hunting and heaven forbid you bring up cats he would light up like a Christmas Tree. Dam it I wish I had a chance to formally say goodbye to Charlie. I will miss him. Just a few of the many gifts from Charlie. I will hold these till I am gone!
Hate to hear this, Charlie was one of the good guys. The fire certainly won't be the same without him. I will indeed pour a nice stout in memory of him as soon as I post this. Godspeed Fieldgrade.
My first real interaction with Charlie was when he sent me (a guy he did not know) his out of print book Call Of The Hounds by Del Cameron to read. I tried to pay him for postage, he wouldn't take it. Matter of fact he did not include a return address. I told him I need his address to get his book back to him. Nope not if you are going to send me money he said! Charlie was a stand up guy. His word was good as gold! Dam it this is really bad news today. I hope he enjoyed the maple syrup I brought him. I know he told me he never did get to fishing with the flies I made for him. Rest In Peace My Friend. You will be sorely missed here at the fire and in Life. God Bless
I hate to hear that. I know he loved his house, and his porch, and his view of his river. I expect he was a little lonely after his wife passed, but he didn't share that too much. He knew who he was, and he was ok with who he was, and nobody off the internet was going to get him down, or make him question himself. Sure would have liked to have met him.
Godspeed Charlie, hope the hunting is great , and the scenery better, where you're headed!
A glass lifted for Super Grade. He didn't know me from Adam, but he always put a smile on my face, because he lived where I would love to be able to live.
Very sorry to hear this. I don't post a lot but I read this forum and others daily and everything Charlie posted was well worth the time of reading. RIP Charlie, this place is diminished without you.
Oh man, I really hate to hear this. Like others, Charlie was a friend who I met on another forum and we immediately liked each other. Charlie, you will always be remember by me, thank you for your friendship.
I am saddened to learn of Charlie's passing, and I will miss his presence here. He was posting after his last hospital trip, so I had assumed that he hard turned the corner to recovery. I can understand his desire to keep his situation from being common knowledge, and I hope that he rests in peace.
Lonny, Thanks for letting us know...Charlie was and will remain to me what is great about the Fire. A good man, great trapper and hunter and a man of his word through his actions and deeds.
Thanks for the info Lonny, I knew somewhat of his health problems, but as you said, he kept it close to his vest just how bad it was. I was hoping to visit him again this coming spring/early summer as I plan on being in the general area then.
Glad you had a home set up for Sally, I had the pleasure of her company when I visited too.
Sometimes things I read here just suck...........bigly.
Bye Charlie, who I'm proud to have called a 'fire friend.
This really sucks. I considered Charlie a friend. We’ve exchanged a number of PMs and had a few phone calls. He is and will continue to be missed. RIP.
Charlie and I lived in N.W. Nevada during the same time period, and shared many of the same hunting grounds, although our paths never crossed , surprisingly, we talked via P.M. about places we hunted and people we knew.
I am sad that I didn't have a chance to meet up with him. He was on my "list"
Thanks Lonny and Judman for taking care of our " friend"

irfubar,
thanks for that reminder of that area. Short drive from here. Now i have to go back through some PM's from him to see where he recommended I visit someday. I'll check some out next year and tell the creeks, hills, stones, desert, and mountains Charlie says hello.
sorry to hear it...have questions about what happened with his health, cancer, then in the other thread mention of a serious head injury from a fall, spose we'll never know...RIP list member
I believe this was his second or third favorite shotgun.
And a beer I know he enjoyed.
Charlie would love that picture Sam.
He told me just the other day about when he sold you that shotgun there was some issues with the transfer and he laughed when you said to him something along the lines of, "If I were you, I'd tell me to get fawked!"

Lonny, it was some bullchit over the FFL here wouldn't accept from a private seller, or some other minor detail,
Had to send the shotgun all the way back across MT and into ID.
I felt terrible and sent a check to cover the extra shipping and hassle and Charlie sent back a tote full of 16 gauge ammo.....
The posts here all display what a genuinely good man Charlie was. While I never spoke with him directly, other than through several threads here, I could tell he was one of the good guys, someone I would like to meet in person.
May he rest in eternal peace. He’s once again reunited with his lovely bride whom he missed greatly. They’re riding the trails of heaven and she still won’t put her boots in the stirrups.

We lost a good one.
To you Charlie...! May your traps be full and your rifles fine! May your soul remain ornery yet your dogs civilized.........RIP!
After reading his posts over the past years and the posts on this thread, it is obvious the Campfire is truly diminished with his passing. Rest in Peace, Fieldgrade.
Very sorry to hear this. I know he lived alone (?), but 68 is way too young. I hope this serves as a lesson to all, that as you age, you must, MUST, be aware of your health and DO go see a doctor more often. From what I gather, cancer got him, but it does make one wonder, if he took care of himself. Goodspeed and we'll see you acrosss the river.. J
Oh crap. Talk about a shock. Charlie was one of those guys that seemed bigger than life. I guess that's because of my immense respect for him. What a kick in the gut is right. Terrible news.
Rest easy, Charlie. You are missed around here, respected, and fondly remembered. Regret not having the pleasure of having met you face to face though living not far away; will learn from that, sir.
I am truly saddened, and this hit me hard this morning. At 43, there are not many men living I look up to. In the limited number of times we interacted, Fieldgrade quickly showed he was one of those. I could give a rats ass about 99% of the folks on this forum, but he was at the top of the 1% in my book. Just Damn.
I did not see this until just now, These notifications are getting harder and harder to take has time goes on.
Charlie, May you always feel the warmth of Sunshine, May you always hear the sound of Hounds, and the Sound of that River, Reunited with your bride at last.. Rest in Peace my Friend.
Damit. I knew in my gut when he started selling guns and knives here that something was wrong. I asked about it too and he just played it off as too old and too tired. We both knew he was lying.
Rest easy Charlie. Hopefully I'll get to shake your hand on the other side.
YES!!!! LOL! He gave some kid a true "Charlie" answer and I suppose it hurt the kids feelings! Da axeman commeth!
For sure
Charlie had little patience with avoidable personal ignorance. He was gold.
It was a golden moment! LOL!! And he said nothing bad or malicious!!
You wouldn't happen to have a link to that exchange, would you?
His candor is one of the reasons I gravitated toward him.

No it was several years ago. And knowing that site the way I do, I’m sure it was deleted by those in power. I could not find the email he sent me either. But I know the jist of it.
