Posted By: bwinters Glock 20 in HPG Recon kit bag - 09/06/20
I bought a HPG Recon bag on suggestion from the 'Fire. I spent this past week hiking around Lander/Dubois/Pinedale. Excellent setup. I highly recomend the HPG Recon for an accessible carry situation. I simply zipped it shut when in the parking lot or trailhead to keep people from asking or getting weirded out, unzipped side and top when hiking. Put almost 60 miles on this week with it and it was very comfortable and not nearly as hot as I was expecting. I'm ordering the small bino pouch to attach to the PALS. Should make an excellent chest rig for a pistol/bino or about any other small items that need accessed (compass, gps, wind indicator, keys, etc). Thanks for the guys suggesting the HPG!
Nice review. Thanks
Did ya use a MIC holster?
Dumb question - what is a MIC holster?
That little doohickey that fits over the trigger guard. It has a string for going around a belt. It was designed for minimalist carrying.

Hopefully this link works
Why do you need a holster in a bag?
Oh I don’t know, maybe having a loaded Glock 10mm next to my chest isn’t that appealing. The MIC holster is just a little added safety measure for me. By all means go with out.

If its what I think your referring to, HPG sells them. Got one with my HPG I use for my Glock 20 for the reason you mention because I had the same thought.
As it turns out, not sure its necessary as there is very little for the trigger to snag on in its slot of the kit bag. Still nice to have and I prefer to use it. Its cord attaches to a loop in the bottom of the slot and the guard detaches from the pistol as it clears the top.
The kit bag also has room to carry my "never go anywhere without it" stuff as well. Compass, extra knife, fire starter, lighter, snacks, mini flashlight, etc as well as an extra mag, speed strip, or speed loader depending on what I'm carrying. Good unit.

Well, I have never had a bag to carry a gun,
And only a 9mm Glock.
So I'm safe. Maybe!

Yep that’s the one. They might have different names...
Is the concern when putting the pistol in the bag?
Or just the whole light trigger pull/no safety thing?

Not trying to be a dick here, Never even seen one of these bags.
They interest me, but I can't imagine when I would use one.
They make sense, just not for me.

I have their Snubby Bag. It's great for carrying a ready-access gun while hiking with a daypack in areas where you'll have a lot of human contact.
All of the above. Why take chances, wearing gloves, stressful draws, falls, snags....the MIC holster shouldn’t slow a draw.
I practiced drawing from the Recon and shooting at close range (10-20 ft). It is entirely possible to draw and fire 2-3 shots - and hit softball sized targets. But nothing is going to prevent you from getting chewed on if the bear shows up close and is moving fast. They move way too fast to do much about it except hit fetal and pray.

Nice thing about the HPG is you can still draw from the fetal praying position.
A 10mm isn't powerful enough to stop large brown bear especially when the bear is angry. Best assume fetal position and pray. The HPG is kind of expensive way to carry first aid kit. Glock 20 needs one of them hip or thigh holsters commandos use for CQB.
Recon bag with their Bino pouch mounted on it is a pretty slick rig

It's a waste of $19. You can get ENTIRE holster like DeSantis Pegasus Slim-tuck for $22 with free shipping from Amazon. You can take off the belt loop to make it more comfortable in pocket with small pistol like G42/43.

Nope .
Slavek is the dumbest piece of euro-trash to ever grace the campfire. Fact: every loaded pistol need to have the trigger covered. I use a Raven trigger guard attached to my recon kit bag and can perform a Bill Drill in < 3 seconds while jogging. This schidt is not hard if you are willing to put in the effort to prove for yourself what works and what doesn't. The HPG kitbag is one of the best pieces of gear I have used in many years.

I always carry my Glock and the kitbag works with or without a pack and is a must have for me.

10mm not work on bear? I dont think HPG .makes one for a 105 mm cannon. I'm guessing the recent guys killing pissed off brown bears with 10mm is fake news. Regardless of what some say, I feel better with a 10mm than a can of people seasoning. The wind might blow a bit in Wyoming. I'd bet the deflection of my 220 hard cast was minimal at 10-20 feet. I'd rather depend on me than the fickleness of some spray, the wind, pressured gas to make it work, etc. I trust me better than a can......
I really like my kit bag. It is just as fast as a chest holster and the gun is out of sight from others who may be uncomfortable seeing another hiker carrying a gun. I don't live in grizzly country, but black bear are common. I alternate between my G29 and a M&P 45 ACP compact. I have 200 gr DoubleTap hardcast for the 10mm and 255 gr Buffalo Bore hardcast for the 45. I like my chances.
Sweet setup. The kit bag has always been a very handy, comfortable way to carry my stuff. Especially when you’d rather keep things as discrete as possible while still being accessible. I’m a fan of the runners kit back for the slimmer profile. Which can be worn under a jacket also if need be. Finding the sweet spot for ripping the zippers open is the ticket and it sounds like you’ve worked on that. Carry your G20 with confidence. And enjoy. The gunfighters inc Kenai setup is also a nice addition to the gear pile. Take care,

Colt

I am heading out in less than 48 hours for another trip, Hiking in Grizzly bear habitat is on the agenda again. I will be wearing my HPG recon bag and a 10mm. Leaving the .44 home this trip. I figure a primary load and a reload is likely sufficient.

Nice. I may have to get one for my own 20SF. Looking them up right now.

Is this what y'all are talking about and is this a decent price?
EE.....
That's one version. I went with the Runner's Kitbag, but it got mounted to one of their Tarahumara packs. It's my woods bumming rig.

I'm going to grab another, but this time it'll be a recon.

Thanks. The one graphic comparing all the different versions really explains things. That one is considerably cheaper than the Amazon price.
I have a recon bag and have carried it with a snub nose revolver, a Glock 20, and everything in-between. That’s the neat thing about it, it’s sh*t inside agnostic!

I also carry a folding knife, an extra mag, my phone, and my keys.

I hope most ignore the grizzly bear idiot comments and conversation. Carry a stout load and don’t think twice. End of that. If you’ve been charged by a grizz or brown bear, please raise your hand. I’ll bet not a half-dozen on here have besides me, and that includes the AK tribe have.

If you want to do something helpful, attach more of a grab-it strap to the zipper. Something where you can get a handful if you’re a bit excited.
I am starting to think I may need one of these doo dads.
SAR version currently out of stock.
Can you tell us where you got the elastic pouches on the front?

I need some of those.

At least you gals "get" to look at pictures, use your Imaginations and fhuqking Pretend...you "lucky" kchunts. Hint. LAUGHING!

Bless your hearts.

Every time I think you couldn't possibly be dumber, well, you "rise to the occasion" and prove that, yes, you could.....

your description of wood bumming, I feel is vastly different than most here, lol

Sagebrush, how does your 10mm ammo compare to your 45 acp in penetration and wound channels?

Maybe I missed it.
I don't know about wound channels but it is hard to catch either.

The .45 250 grain +P went through (off the top of my head) about three feet of ballistic gel if I recall correctly.

JWP475 shot them into gel blocks for me a while back. I would have to search for the info. Guys reporting back have been dropping game with both and getting complete penetration.

Like anything, if you place them in the right spot, you get good results. If you don't get them in the right spot, then you can get some unfavorable results. I have seen handgun rounds (from various cartridges) glance off skulls of animals due to guys wanting to take frontal shots on them, versus the ear hole to eye hole path which is what I recommend and use.

Not what I'm asking and since I shoot S&W revolvers not applicable to me. What I am asking is about results on game shot with his 170 gr. SWC hardcast .357 Magnum load. I thought perhaps someone has shot a deer, antelope, hog or two with the load and how effective that it was in terminal performance.

Not Mac but they fit my GP100 and are very accurate. I haven’t been able to shoot anything except paper though.
MOGC,

I have had some feed back (all positive) but I cannot remember the animal types. The projectile used in that load is one that Elmer Keith designed prior to the invention of the .357 Magnum. He was using it in various guns, to include the S&W Heavy Duty revolvers. It has been used for a very long time and has a long track record of performance.

Thanks Mac. I'm waiting for a chance to push that through the shoulder of a decent size hog.
I'll let you know the outcome of that. I need to make a commitment to packing a .357 more often. Nowadays I tend to have a 10mm or .45 ACP with me and my .357's and .41 see less woods time. I should fix that I guess.

If the holster is anchored solidly to the bag and the draw side is left open, then it might act like a chest rig.

If the holster is loose and the bag is zipped, you won't be getting that G20 deployed very quickly.

It really is all what you are most comfortable with as far as I am concerned. I often carry a big bore revolver for hunting, but switch to the semi auto for when I am in big critter country and hiking, as I know I can put more rounds on target in a shorter amount of time with the semi.
This is why I utilize the method that I do. I run a pouch on the outside for the handgun, and have added a short bungee with a carabiner that attaches to a belt loop or belt to secure the bottom of the kit bag.

When I am doing things that I need extra retention I can just put the flap over the grip of the handgun.

Then when I am close to civilization/people where I don't want anyone to see the firearm, I can simply put it in the main zippered compartment.
