I have a Colt Model of 1911 WWI replica, carbonia blued - Aprox 4000 + mfg.

It's not an original as above - but it is a beautiful Colt 1911 !

When I was a kid, you’d occasionally see USGI surplus .45’s which at some point, had been handed off to cousin Larry who worked at Acme Chrome Plating. Larry would sneak it into work and plate it with the next batch of bumpers that went through. Eventually these pistols ended up gunshops, where kids like me would slobber all over the display case until somebody ran us off. I think I am genetically predisposed toward redheads and nickel plated handguns.

A relative came up with this Franken-Colt awhile back--WWII upper on a '91A1 frame, all poorly nickel plated.. It's an oddball and but I liked ir and finally pried him loose from it. The pistol does run and shoot well. Five rounds of USA 230 FMJ, 50 yards, rested shooting.

I gave one from 1916 too. Not quite as nice and thinking of having Doug Turnbull restore it.

Been wanting a Wiley Clapp LW commander. Got one coming next week. I’ll be in 9 m/m hope that’s not some kind of sin. Hasbeen
Fireball, a 38 Super is still on my bucket list! Very nice!
I turned most of my Colts into cash awhile back, but here is my favorite one that I still own. Its a lightweight Gov't that is way more accurate than it has a right to be! Its an XSE, and I swear that stands for Extra Sharp Edges! When I first got this thing I think you could shave with it! I knocked the edges off with a stone, and now she is just right!

Can't argue that. I guess it's about as close to some of the really nice vintage pieces posted here as I can get. Nice stuff.
Sold this one a few years ago. Not a Colt, so technically it doesn't belong here.

[Linked Image]
Still have this one, and it is an actual Colt, a Government Model made in 1961. I carried it for a few years, IWB. Bone stock, except for the grips. Still have the factory grips, but they came with hard rubber factory grips at that time, and this gun deserves better.

Colt series 70 frame and a Colt GI hard slide from the '50's. On its 2nd barrel and 3rd tune-up. Latest accuracy job looks like the best.

That was one of my first sought after guns, too, back when they were current production, back in the early 1980s. I had one on order for almost a year. They were about as hard to come by back then as an S&W Model 29 with a six inch barrel (Dirty Harry's Gun). In both cases I eventually compromised. I went ahead and ordered a Model 57 S&W, which was easily obtained, and a standard Government Model, Mark IV, Series 70, also easily obtained. Eventually, decades later, I bought a couple of Model 29s on the used market, but never a Series 70 Commander.
I had a Commander once upon a time, but that's the only one. Just about right for CCW.

Here is my old 70 Series that prior to rebuild/re-finish/semi-retirement, was my "do everything" 1911 for a number of years. It has killed elk, deer, ground squirrels, been used in felony takedowns, used for USPSA, and about anything you can imagine.

Has light trigger (why I bought it). Think new in early/mid 90's.
Pachmayr arched MS housing, rosewood grips given away.
Wilson guide rod.
Flawless.
Sights suck, but it chews a ragged hole at 50 ft.
Need to send off for Bomar rear...........but trust it like no other............so it stays with me.

an unfired in the kraft box remington isn't some kind of ghetto gun. It would sure bring more dollah than most of the mixmatched colts you will find circulating.

Started carrying this in 1991 as I recall.

It became my backup/ off duty gun for a while when I carried 1911 on duty in the mid/late 90s, before I switched to a .45 Glock.

MM,

that is a great looking rig--reminds me of some rigs i used about 30 years ago.

they are more than relevant to this day.

i remember the old S&W rear sights on those--was it by per chance worked on by Kings?

Thanks for the kind words, HV.

No, that wasn't done by Kings, & the concept came from Swenson, but I did the work including making the front sight from a partridge type target sight. It has a little more TLC on the parts that matter as well.............100% reliable.

My 2nd Dad was an extremely accomplished gunsmith & machinist & I had the benefit of advice, help & access to a 1st class shop for a goodly portion of my life.

I bought that gun new in 1973, IIRC...........1st handgun I ever bought & it became my 1st EDC.

Regards,

MM

great job--the front sight is a winner (and can be a challenge to do).

you are very fortunate to have that type of person in your up-bringing--it really boosts a person's progress--to start early, and at home.

really enjoy your 1911 posts--with the exception of the HK p7 and HK USP, the 1911's are my favorite CF semi rigs.
Yes, regardless of what some gun heathens think, the 1911 is still at least somewhat relevant. wink

I actually shot a match a few weeks ago with my 1911 Commander and out of 90 shots, it only balked once when I had too much thumb on the slide while using the slide release. I love the way a 1911 points but dang you gotta be on your toes to run one well.

Nice gun TWR, but as to your comment, that's never been my experience.

Never had an single issue with adding thumb pressure to a slide, but I'd expect the same issue if that happened with most any other semi too.

JMHO.

Colt series 70 repop I got in about '08. Sent to Colt to have a model "O" package applied to it. I had Ken Crawley add a cylinder and slide smooth face medium trigger and perform a trigger job on it and a night sight in the front and open the notch up on the Novak rear sight. Need a new pic,
it now has Wilson Bullet proof Thumb safety and slide release and an Brown flat checkered mainspring.

Great thread! I thought I'd bump it back up with a picture of one of my 1911's. This is a Colt MK IV/Series '70 Government Model 45 that has had the barrel cut back to 4'' and a Pachmayr Signature custom job done on it. This gun was completed in November of 1973. The group shown as the final group measures a few thousands of an inch over one half inch and is 5 shots at 25 yards from a Ransom Rest. Not bad for a 4 inch barrel custom job done in 1973.

Close friend who died a few years ago was friends with the exhibition shooter Ernie Lind. He had about a half dozen of Ernie's guns in his collection. One day when I was visiting with a friend, he gave us the gun and said to go shoot it as he wanted to make sure that it worked. Have no clue who built the gun but the slide was like on roller bearings. The engraving was done in Germany.
