You didn't list the criteria for making it your "favorite." If "favorite" means the one you'd keep if you could only have one, or the one you reach for first when you are going hunting, then I'd say 30-06.

Otherwise my favorite cartridge is the 45-70 Govt. I like the name. I like holding a 45-70 cartridge in my hand. I like the reaction it brings from non-shooters who see one for the first time. I like the conversations that it stirs. I like that it's an old military cartridge. I like that guys still shoot incredibly long shots with it with open sights! I like the exit hole it makes on the back side of 2x4. I like that it brings a smile to my face when I even think about it. I sold my Ruger #1 Liberty 45-70 to a friend last fall and am still regretting it! I still get to shoot it every time we go out, and when I'm busting milk jugs full of water at 200yds it makes me want to run to the gun store and get another one! Sorry, for the long post, but I just wanted to be clear.

I'm taking this as a "favorite cartidge" thread instead of a "pick one for all-around use."

I really like the .270 Winchester. Works extremely well on moderate sized animals, doesn't kick much, and its classy.

"All rounder" is a .300 WM for me.

.300 Win. Mag. or .338 Win. Mag. are both near and dear to my heart.
I have a lot of favorites, but based on what I grab to hunt with the most, 7x57 Mauser.
280 AI or 25-284..
It is a tie between the last one I shot, and the next I plan to buy.
For what reason, I just can not get away from my 30-06. Eventho I have a few other calibers both smaller and larger --- the 30-06 is my go-to gun when things get serious. It suppose I have the most confindence in its ability to get the job done!

Long time favorite 7mm Rem Mag.
New favorite 300 WSM
My favorite cartridge is the 45/70 Govt. It's a fun round to handload and shoot. It also has a lot of good history and mystique.

But if I was limited to one cartridge for the rest of my life it would be the 300 Win. It is probably the most versatile cartridge on the planet. The only animals I wouldn't use it on would be African DG, but I don't plan to do that kind of hunting anyways.
.30-06 for "sentimental favorite"

Recently, I've been using more of the 6.5x55 and .257 Bob, though.

I liked (and can appreciate) the answer that went something like: "my favorite varies between the last one I purchased and the next one I'm going to buy". :-)

I'll say the 308 Win. This can cover the all around and the favorite. I know it sounds boring but it doesn't recoil, shoots accurately, isn't heavy, low maintenance, etc. If I want the speed and need to hold a different rifle, then I'll grab my 204 and shatter the sound barrier and detonate a few dozen varmints from time to time.

This is tough; the .270 WIN just barely edges out the .300 WIN MAG for my favorite.
Based on the proportions of rounds fired per year, clearly the 22lr. 1Minute
You know there's so many I'm fond of but think I like the 7 STW round the best.Awesome selection of bullets hard hitting flat shooting and recoil within reason. Also just looking at the case makes me happy.
I don't think that there probably has been a point in my life that the answer would have been anything other than the .30-06. My wife claims that I tend to be a bit inflexible. (In my beliefs and in my joints - I've reached the age where it is possible for some things to be too flexible.) blush

If I had to walk across Africa and Alaska with only one gun and live off the land then I would pick up my old 30-06 or my 7x57. Thank goodness I never have to make such a decision as I really love my .338, 375 H&H, 416 Rem, and my old Sav. 99EGs in 250 and .308 and 450-400 double to mention a few. Then there is my love, the 25-35 Win SRC that has served me so well all my life, killed a load of deer and a number of elk with it. I think I would just quit hunting.

Just breaking it down another way, thought it was interesting and that maybe someone else would too. I couldn't believe the 270 had that big of an advantage, but with the multiple varieties of both 7mm and .30 calibers they tend to spread out the gun owners over several calibers.

A couple more comparisons like short vs. long vs. magnum length and parent case of the favorite cartridges from the list (I'm sure the '06 has it by a long shot) would also be interesting.

This is VERY interesting. I would have thought that the 30/06 would have won this by a landslide.Either the 30/06 guys are shy, retiring types who don't want to express an opinion, or the 270 people are more avid voters, or SOMETHING! But, I suspect a lot of people have discovered that a 270 kicks less and shoots flatter than a 30/06, and kills as well on most of the stuff we hunt. Like Dobrenski says, the 30/06Improved is....a 270.

Top Dog is still the 270!

270 still #1? Lotta smart shooters on this site!
When the 'Campfire Rifle' was voted the 300 WM was selected. Today its a different round.

To be frank I wish that all my 270's were 7mm's. The 270 Win is a superb round but I still favor the quicker twist that most 7mm tubes have. The only reason I even have (4) .277's is that I liked the rifles.

The VLD quip is just a reference to an upcoming article by Mule Deer on using Berger VLD's on game. I mean of course that the the .277" bore has little choice in long bullets because of the twist.

In other words what bullet would you shoot with a 1-9 .277" that you could not shoot from a 1-10 twist?
My all time favorite cartridge...22LR.

WB.
If, by "favorite", you mean if I had a choice of ONLY one cartridge, it would have to be a .30/06 in a centerfire rifle even though I don't own one.

My reasoning for this is because I believe with the right bullet and hand-load, the .30/06 is capable to taking any big game in North America including the "big bears"... and doing it with a minimum of "fuss" and recoil.

7mm Wby Magnum
300 Wby Magnum
The fast and flat 7mm Rem Mag in 150 grains for deer and 160 grains for anything bigger. I don't mind the thump on my shoulder, makes me feel like Im firing a rifle! And I love the way my Ruger kicks straight back into my shoulder, Hoorah!

338 Win Mag
Tough choice...I'm a .35 fan, love the .35 Remington in my early 336A's(24" barrel) and the .358 Winchester.

But, I sure would hate to give up the .250 Savage and .257 Roberts.
Put me down for the .280 Remington! Monashee
Two Mausers come to mind.

308 and 358, I gotta love the short action.
308 Winchester with the 7mm Remington mag a close second.

I just built a savage 110 in 250-3000 and I couldn't be happier with it.
