I just sent a 1917 Erfurt action to my 'smith. Any nicely finished customs out there? M98 SR's preferred like Kar98, G33-40 etc.
Here is a cute little Mexican small ring I had done a few years ago.

Terry, you need to knock this chit off! Or, I need to wear a bib whenever I see you have posted on a link!
This is a thread that ought to generate some nice wood...:)

Have a few but they all wear sinthetic...aiming to restock a 257 Bob so at least one of them will have a pretty face.
Here's another Mexican.

JR/Terry: Man those are both very nice! You guys are a bad influence. cry smile
Another small ring Mexican 1910. What makes this one unique is the 'smith profiled the left side of the action to resemble a G33/40, made a lever release floor plate and installed a Greener safety. It is a 6.5x55.

This whole thread is rifle porn at its best -- or is it worst? Anyway there are some beautiful rifles.

Too much drooling and slobbering for a poor old man like me to look at! But bring them on!

sickNow THAT is what I'm talking about Terry! No paint, no plastic. Jackie Gleason said it best.......how sweet it is.. Nice touch with the half octagon barrel. Thanks. MrC
Never owned a Mexican.....yet. That is my kind of rifle. Is that a tapered octagon to round barrel on there? Fine hunk of walnut too. You composite stock fellas lookin'? Tell me this doesn't get your blood pumpin'. I never get tired of this stuff. Thanks JR.....
All fine rifles. Wow!
Thanks Chet. Ever lay it on a scale. Very nice.
Thanks Randy. That G is coming along nicely.
Threads like this make me smile grin

Mike
Biesen is a master! Very nice indeed!
Man my rifles are ugly now! Nice rifles guys. wink
I cannot post pictures from here but they have been posted before. I have a 6 1/2# walnut and steel 19" barreled 8x57 receiver sighted custom on an Erfurt and a Wisner built 7x57 on a Swede with all the bells and whistles including the G33/40 cuts. The Erfurt will be heading to South Africa in a bit over two weeks.
how about a small ring customized to be left handed...has a shilen 257Bob barrel, could use a restock but not something you see every day...

I am no Mauser expert for sure but to be fair, I believe this is actually a Mexican 1910 with a 98 bolt shroud and a cock on opening conversion.

I am really unsure how they managed this conversion... It does not show any signs of welding but does show some draw file marks. I think the rear ring has been extended a bit. Its well done no matter. Any information is appreciated.

The barrel was built in Austria many years ago and recently rebored by Delta Gunshop. It's one of the few integral rib half round/octagon that didn't have any rear sight dovetail cut into the barrel. Musta come with a peep.

I wouldn't push your Erfurt too hard. Pretty sure they are small ring, large thread.

There are some more pics of the Mex posted above over here at.

Thanks for the weight quote on the Erfurt. Now I want the G33/40 cuts. Better go and email Ted for a quote on the cuts. Im trying to end up at around 6.5# including a gold ring Ultralight 3X9.

That barrel really pops. I plan on pushing the creedmoors at 2,900 plus. Definitely won't push it over 3,000. I think the large thread Douglas Premium chromoly barrel can handle it.

It's the small ring action with that barrel that is the concern. I keep my Erfurt loaded to 50 kpsi maximum.

JR, Have you chronied your max loads at or near the muzzle? If so, please mention the bullet weight. I know what kilopascals are. I just have no way to measure chamber pressures. So, albeit assumably less precise, I need to rely on fps at the muzzle. Thanks. I love this ship. smirk Ray

My smith said the cuts shouldn't cost more than $125 or so. But, weight savings is minimal. Still, lots of cool factor there. Thanks again.
The first pic is my small ring Peruvian. It has some of the G33/44 cuts. It has damascus scope bases. I chambered it in 250-3000. Jim Kobe stocked it and the metal is out for rust blue.

Thanks Butch. Nicely contoured Peruvian. Looks great in bare bones. Can hardly wait to see the final product. And that Mexican.....ooooof! Are those flip down rings? Pic is a little dark. Something is other than conventional there. I need to go look at more Christman's work.
Those are Talley quick disconnect rings.
Butch
Ah....should have guessed. Took a look at David's website. One of these days I'll bump into a similar David Christman custom with a few hunts on it and scoop it up. You've made me a fan.

All very impressive. 21 Czech Brno is a new one on me. I'm a lifelong fan of small ring 98's now for sure. The left action cut on the Fisher stock rekindled my inspiration to add that feature to my Erfurt. Can't say I'm 100% on it yet though since the raised flair about the bolt release would be lost. George Hoenig as in Hoenig pantograph? I can hardly wait to get started. Thanks.
Ah, one of my favourite rifles, the sweet Brno 21/22 series. I have six of these and am just dealing on another very nice one. I also love the large ring ZG-47 later issue rifles and bought a sixth one last night, this in 9.3x62, I prefer these to any other rifle I have ever owned.

That Burgess-Hoenig .280 just makes me quiver, I would consider that I "had died and done to heaven"if I were to buy and hunt with it.

WB, you show superb taste in rifles, I also love the very simple, yet, elegant Fisher 7x57, genuine masterwork!
Made in Germany August of 1924. Originally proofed for blackpowder, and reproofed for nitro loads with 245 grain bullets at 2250 fps. My original Kynoch and DWM 9x57mm are pushing 90 years old but chrono at 2145 fps average.

A fine example of the Mauser Sporter. If a gun could talk............Thanks 'kid. CB.
I know it isn't "custom", but it sure is nice. Really light, and kicks with much more authority than I thought it would. smile

Thanks!
Desirable to say the least. Any lettering present on the action ring or left side?
Very nice, reminds me of an Oschatz custom DWM-9.3x62. of the same vintage, 1927, with claw mounted 34mm scope and fabulous wood that I had for a couple of years. I sold it to a "friend" who really wanted it and then "flipped" it a year later for a $1000.00 profit.....

But, I still have my later Type B in 9.3x62 and it is NOT going anywhere until I go under.

Nobody makes rifles like this anymore and those of us who appreciate and own them are a lucky bunch.

TSquare, you, sir, have some outstanding rifles and show fine taste in your choices. I would love to have this little gem sitting in one of my safes and would use it for Muleys in the few dry days we get in hunting season here in BC.

I think that I might well have a 25-06 built on one of my Brno 21 actions, probably a 23" tube and maybe a MPI handle for a change. What are you loading in this lovely rifle?
Here's a little better photo of the rifle The G33/40 is the bottom rifle. The top rifle is a 1909 Argentine barreled and chambered for the 416 Ruger. Gay Goudy stocked that rifle as well.

Kutenay,

I haven't settled on a load as yet. I was at the range with it on Saturday, shooting a load of 50.0 grains of H-100V, 117 grain Sierra Game King bullets and Federal 219M primers. This load shows promise, giving me groups just under MOA (last group was 0.863"), but there is still work to do on it. I wouldn't hesitate to go hunting with it as is, but I'm satisfied it will do better.

TT
Tom,
I'm about 2 weeks or so from getting my Hyper Single back from David Christman. After I had the stock carved from the wood you furnished, I had David install a quarter rib and rust blue it. Kathy Forster did the checkering and Bernie Harrell carved the stock. I think you will appreciate your wood.
I'm probably as anxious to see it as you are. Well, perhaps not quite, but almost. Please post when you get it.

Many thanks,

Tom

Here's my G33/40, not quite a pretty rifle by some ways of thinking but it is to me.
It has a fine piece of African Walnut via Brown wrapped around it. I have a great stick of Tessier for it but just can't bring myself to mess with the balance of the rig.

Started life as an 06, I wore it out and took a lot of game wiht it. Next up it had a Dougy 25/06 barrel on it that went up in smoke at less than 1K rounds. But, it killed well while it was living. Then I had a Lilja #2 in .270 on it, wore it out and took some nice game with it. It's also worn a Chanlynn 338/06 tube off and on. That's another round I like and it's very capable and easy to set to 500 yds with dotz. Also had a lilja #1 in .270 on it, easily the bitchiest barrel I've ever seen. Try like heck to get it to perk it wouldn't, so it became a tomato stake. Now finally it has a Brux #2 cut to 23" in .270 on it and it's a shooting machine. The Brux broke in really nice and continues to shoot well and clean up nice.

This lil rig has a lot of luck to it.

Lifes short, hunt hard!

Dober
Mark,
You have some nice equipment!
Thx Butch, they're basically tools to me but I want them to work to perfection. This rig's bounced a lot of game and my wifes taken a lot of elk with it as well.

Dober
One of the coolest rigs around Dober!
Thx Tanner, it's got some panache for sure. But when I'm shooting it I don't know...grin

Dober
Been watching this thread from the start. There are some fine rifles here.

Fantastic pair T. Nice Argy, big fan. Got a mild custom Argy in the safe in 7X57, still unfired except for proof test. Big thanks for your posts and the numerous ones as shared by others. No, when I got the rifle it already had custom bottom metal on it. I think I've picked up three or four 09s in the past five or six years, an none of them had the original military bottom metal.

TT
Thanks.

I always thought that was the big lure with them. Are they also considered a better made action so people want to use them regardless of the hinged bottom metal?

It seems to shoot the several combinations I've tried really well. It does fine with 100 and 120gr Hornadys, and IMR 4350 & 4831. My current load is 47.5 gr Reloader 19 and the 100gr Hornady right now because it does well with them and I have a lot of both.
Thanks. Best of luck next season.

Terry,

Sorry I missed your question on the safety. As I bought the rifle used I have no idea. I had been considering a lightweight 7x57 build and just could not pass this rifle up when I found it. I do know via email exchange with Mr. Wisner that he built the rifle many years ago and stocked it in mannlicher fashion in black walnut. Short of the Shilen barrel and Swede action, all of the metal was made by him. I particularly like the quarter rib treatment over the receiver ring mounting one of his fine rings. Somewhere along the way the original stock was replaced by the one you see that Fred Speiser crafted. As it is a bit "clubby" compared to the metal, the rifle is currently at Dean Zollinger's for a some "diet" work on the stock. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Sir,

The action is one of 50 built by Pete Grisel prior to his involvement in the development of the Dakota action with Don Allen. This particular one is serial number 49. I have only see one other for sale but it was stocked with a 13" LOP capped with a 1" pad so I passed hoping I would find another. I eventually did.

North to well north of 5k depending upon the quality of the build and the maker's name.
Right in my range. David Christman built mausers are on the list as well.

99. I like the top one of the 3. Ever go back and see prices realized on these? I like the light/trim look of that top one a lot.
no, I don't recall what they went for now but you can bet they were all 5 figure guns. JJ's keeps several years of old auctions on their site and you can search their old catalogs and it should show sales prices.
Only had time to check one realized list last night without success. My guess would have been $7,500, $9,500 and $23,000. respectively depending on the close-up quality. Will check later. Thanks.

Karnis. I never get tired of looking at this rifle. Thanks again.
brno284.....what you have there is one that I wish I had.
Thanx, I have a few, the one pictured is actually on the block in the classifieds. I have 4 so I figure it can go to pay for its large ring counterpart the BRNO ZG47 which I just picked up. So now I have a matched set which I have been searching to replace after I foolishly sold one!
I know a certain old geezer who is "jealous" of ONE that you have, a particular 21/22 action and I bet that you know just which one! smile

It should not be too difficult for a guy in Montana, to buy one of these Brnos, here in Canada. I have bought one 21H and two ZG-47s in the past two months and passed on one of the nicer 22H rifles in 7x57 I have seen for awhile, at a good price, as I am saving to buy a 4x4 and I have quite a few now.

Any of the bigger Canadian gunstores can find you one and, IIRC, there is an outfit, "Leroy's Big Valley Guns" in Montana, that can do the paperwork to get it to you in the States.

I will say this and it is if you get one in nice shape and put a Micky Edge, Lapour safety and Alaska Arms trigger on it plus a decent scope in Talleys, I will bet that you will seldom carry any other rifle to hunt with. I have almost stonemint P-64 Alaskans in .338WM that I have only taken on one trip because these Brnos make up into such a hell of a using rifle.
Some absolutely outstanding rifle here.
My little small ring 30-06 Husquvarna done by Steve Berg is really more 96 than 98 but is still a light, handy little rifle

Sweet right down to the nicely contoured safety. But, I like the twins atop the scope too. Very slick. What brand/model on the scope?
Zeiss/Jena 6X
Thanks. Appreciate it.
this post should never end...
Jim Kobe shipped mine yesterday. I hope to have pics next week.

I agree. Kinda got me to ignore all my large rings in the safe as of late. They seem sorta fat now that I've warmed up to the SR's.

Very nice, fine wood grain. Do you prefer rust blued over satin hot-tanked? I can't decide which way to go on my next custom. Enjoy.
Classy looking Erfurt Ed.Thanks for the pic.
irfubar:

7# is really impressive. what did you use for a mag box? how did you keep the stock so light?

appreciate it,
tom
Thanks for the kind remarks,
I preffer the rust blue because it has depth that hot blue cant match.
They say its much more durable than hot blue? In 20 years I will let you know!
This rifle is meant to be usad and thats what I intend to do.
Safe queens are worthless to me.
To reach 7lbs total weight I used a featherweight Douglas and Cut the magazine box from the military bottom and fabricated a sheet metal bottom for the mag box.
The S&K mounts are very light, my goal was to make the lightest all steel and wood Mauser possible.
I also picked the blank for light weight, every ounce adds up.
Hey Ed, Do you have any close up pics of your Erfurt Mauser?
That looks like a fine classic rifle.
Sure, here you go. A consignment gun I bought in north Idaho a couple of summers ago. Not an extremely high quality build (builder unknown) but it looks good and carries and shoots well. Would like to see some details of yours as well.

Have drilled & sanded mag box for a little. Intended to use a little epoxy for a border to keep the spring from wandering (synthetic stock) but worked out ok. It is a shame one can no longer buy Gentry mounts for the small ring--they went with Dave, I guess. Agree on queens, they do look good in museums.

Would you tell me a little about the stock, did you shape it or use a pattern? Pad? What was your finished stock weight?

Thanks,
tom
Tomk,
I cant remember exactly what the finished stock weights? I do remember it was under 2lbs.
I did hollow out under the barrel channel and cored out the buttstock.
I made a pattern stock from a laminate that I got from Boyds, the laminates make great patterns because its easy to keep your lines straight with the laminate layers.

Then I went thru a huge pile of blanks at Ed Presliks in Chico,Ca.,
looking for the right combination of grain and weight.

Then I sent the blank and pattern to Dennis Olson, in Plains,Mt.,
and he turned the blank for me.
The pad is a red deccelerator.
Tim-Smith Lyons does my checkering.
Dave at I,T&D fitted the barrel.

I highly recommend all these guys they do great work with short
turn-arounds, and are fairly priced.

Edm,
I will get some more pics for you later today, I am heading up the Mtn. to do some long range shooting.
Thanks.

Imagine with Lupy 4x it would put your finished stock in the neighborhood of 1 3/4#.

do have an "extra" g33 action...good to know 7# can be done w/ great looking wood...:)
Love that stock--am a sucker for fiddleback
EdM,
Thats a fine little Mauser you have.
Its great to see a pic of it out in the field doing what
it was built to do! No safe queen there!
Dont underestimate no-name builders, hell mine was put together in a garage with files and sandpaper by a guy who goes by fubar! ha ha
Tomk,
I was careful in the wood selection to get that weight,
the downside is it turned out to be relatively soft for english walnut. My checker had a hard time with it and it seems more prone
to scratches and dents than my other sticks of english.

There is a guy in Ausralia, named Roger Vardy that grades his blanks by weight as well as figure, he has a web site and is worth checking out. Otherwise I recommend picking your blank by hand.
Roger Vardy in Australia is my go to guy for stock blamks. He has been a pleasure to deal with.
Will check it out, thanks.

EdM,

For some reason I can only post one pic at a time?
It only took me 2 years to figure out how to post pics here! Ha Ha

That has to be one of the sexiest '06s I've seen on the Fire.
I bought a Mexican SR'98 here several years ago. It was nicely sporterized with a fajen monte carlo stock & turned-down military barrel. I sent it to my 'smith to have a Dakota M70 style safety put on and here is what is nearly completed:

-#3 Shilen 9"-twist 7x57 cut to 23"
-re-heat treated receiver
-NECG front sight ramp
-Talley bases w/ flip-up aperture
-Glimm's knob
-Dakota 3-position
-Timney FW
-Leupold VX2 2-7x
-all rust blued
-new custom stock; not as fine a grade as pictured above, but beautiful and straight
-Supergrade sling studs
-checkering by Tim Smith-Lyon @ Classic Checkering

I've had it close to done for a while and, as y'all can imagine, I've been pretty darned excited for a while. Ran low on funds right at the end, so all I'm waiting on now is the checkering.

Really hoping to have it to post up pics & hunt w/ by this fall...
Efw,
That sounds like a very nice rifle. I have always wanted a Mexican Mauser. Tim-Smith Lyon @classic checkering is my checkering guy.
He is a great guy and does fantastic work, I highly recommend him!
I look forward to the pics when done.

irfubar. What do you consider a quick turnaround from the ones you mentioned? The work I've sent recently (Richard's MF and indirectly to PTG) is taking months. Thanks for your input.
Custom bolt,
Dave @ I.T.&D usually has an action rebarreled and returned to me within 4wks.
Tim @ classic checkering is 3 to 4 wks.
They have done many jobs for me and I am always happy with their work and the prices are more than fair.
Thanks. 3-4 weeks is fast. Have a good one.

Gentlemen,
Certainly some exqusite rifles. Working works of art I must say. Craftsmanship at its best. They make the hunt just a little more special. thaks for sharing them with us.
Here is an extra small ring in the middle of two other small rings.

Dang Terry! If you ever want to part with that one let me know. Also I don't think I have ever seen the bottom one with the 1/2 octagon barrel, what are the specs if you don't mind?
Terry, has exquisite taste in rifles, knows what a fine older Brno can be re-built into and has been a great guy for me to deal with on parts and help with contacting US 'smiths. His rifles come very close to my "ideal" designs in wooden stocked classic hunting pieces and I hope he continues to present them here in photos.

Since, I am in BC and a hardnosed, pragmatic old geezer, I now have only synthetic handled rifles built and since both my wife and I are retired, with the concommitant loss of income one expects from that, it is much easier in financial terms to afford all of the custom old Brnos, Husqies and P-64s I crave.

However, when I see Terry's photos, I begin to dream of having Ralf Martini build me a three rifle set on the pair of Brno 21H and the single Brno ZG-47 action(s) I have left from my stash of actions and with fine wooden stocks, probably a pair of 7x64 and a single 9.3x64 "critter getters".

The only real "problem" is the $60.000 it would cost to have this done........., SOB!
Thanks Kutaney.

Pacecars, the bottom rifle is built on a 1910 Mexican SR. It's chambered in 7X57. The metal work was done by Mark Stratton. It sits in a stunning piece of English walnut made by Chic Worthing.

My wife's deer rifle. A SR in .270-08 I built in the early 80's. I bought the action from Jerry Fisher for forty bucks back then. I whittled out the stock and Don Klein did the metal work, checkered and blued it. Barrel by Bob Snapp.

My wife started hunting with it in 1986. Since then she has kept the freezer full of venison with this little rifle. I load 130 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips down to 2600 fps. (Sad experience has taught me that they blow up on a deer's shoulder at 3200.) This is the most accurate pure hunting rifle I have ever shot.

In Michigan we hunt in deer blinds and, after thirty years of hunting, the gun is still in 98% condition. I regard it as a family treasure.
Very nice and a great history behind it as well!

I will vouch for Roger Vardy.
Bumping this one to the top, as I'm on a quest to build a small ring rifle.
This a Husky built in the 60’s, by Iver Henriksen, not as pretty as some, but nice.

The small ring Mauser kurz rifle by Mr. Anderson: What beautiful lines! Beautifull wood. Elegant. Nice Metal work.
Everything that needs to be there is there, and nothing is there that doesn't need to be there. A true masterpiece.

I am partial to small ring 98s. Here are three custom versions none of which are as nice as the masterpieces shown on this thread. Honest working guns though and real pleasures to hunt with! Also have a Brno 22F, but it is a factory rifle.
