Hunting in the Adirondacks the Ruger .44 and the Marlin .35, both with Leupold 1.5-5 scopes, will see field time, but the 7mm-08 will be my regular companion.

After reading this thread again I see lots of dead deer and maybe a clean eating sized pig or two, spending time afield each fall becomes more enjoyable the older I get, I have the hope that some of you men are taking your children/grandchildren out too, hunting and the taking of game for food will help them to grow into more understanding and respectable adults, God knows they're gonna need all the help they can get to navigate it all in the coming decades. smile

I've gt a couple pre-64 300 H&H's, the 280 AI I have is a Montana, that's a rude hard bucking whip weight of a rifle, shoots good if you hang onto it firmly, rifles that light are the hardest for me to shoot accurately, my 16 pound 45-100 Sharps bull gun falls asleep in your hands when you lay it out for a shot. wink

Sweet, after MadMooner reminding me about my 303 up in the African forum, I need to add it to the list, mine shoots the little 215 gr Woodleighs really well, don't believe a deer or pig can hold one.

My choice is simple. The only thing I own that is legal to use on this year's tag is a TC Seneca .45 caliber. It will either be firing 245 grain conicals with 70 grains of FFg or .440", 127 grain PRBs with 65 grains of FFg .. my most accurate load with either bullet / ball. Next year I'll be back to contemplating choices.

Ruger #1 RSI .243 win w 4X Leupold.
My hunting buddy got another 760 Remington in .35 Rem (has two).
Might use one for antlerless if I don't have a doe down by recurve before gun season.
If nothing down at the end of firearms, then will go MZ season with a TC Hawken Silver Elite.

I have this mental picture of some of y'all carrying a golf bag full of rifles when you go deer hunting. Reminds me of a deer hunter I happened upon many years ago. He was carrying a scoped 30-30 for "long range", a 12 gauge pump with slugs for "brush hunting", and a 44 Mag pistol for "close range." He happened to be bunting on a farm that he didn't have permission to be on, and I ran his ass off before he had a chance to shoot somebody.

Oh well, I confess that I sometimes use more than one rifle during the season myself. But, I only carry one at a time.

It SHOULD be up to the hunter to decide what is the most ethical shot, and what weapon to use. But here in Ohio, they allow only one weapon while deer hunting, even when bow hunting during deer gun, you can have no other weapon. The only exception as the law stands now, is a CCW. (I am trrying to get this stupid law repealed.)

I take a minimum of 3 to camp for the first 9 days. After I take a deer with one, I put it away. After I get home after the first week, I start swapping in and out to suit my tastes. All told, I've got a good dozen deer rifles, and it's all a matter of how I feel what I'm going to pack for the latter part of the season. I never have less than two so I at least have a primary and a backup. I've had to go to the backup rifle 3 times in 15 years. There's also the issue of inclement weather. There are rifles (like the Savage 99) that I just don't want out in the rain.

Had MZ, did belly crawl across big field.........Python acted as a plow.
No more deer sidearm.
Took rifle and shotgun on a long night hunt (several farms, walking loop in decent snow). No more rifle/shotgun ventures.
Backups? Sure. But not in the field at same time.
Too old and cranky for the hassle anymore.

I guess since I have a Kimber Classic Select here in 30/06 that hasn't been bloodied yet, that's where we will start. Probably the 150 grain ballistic tip over 59 grains of H4350. The rifle will group them in the same 3/4" group with the 165 over 56 grains of RL 17. 180s land about an inch lower at 100 yards. I was on the fence about playing Kimber roulette, but this turned out to be one of my most consistent rifles. Leopold VX3i 3.5X - 10X in Leupold mounts. Couldn't be happier.

The T3 Hunter 7 Rem mag may see some action as well. 160 Partitions over 66 grains of 7828. Flat ass loves that load.

The 280 AI will likely sit the bench. I shot my buck last season with it. 140 grain TTSX over 60 grains of RL 19 is the recipe. Pac Nor barrel cut to 24". M700 action bedded in an older CDL stock. Almost like cheating.

The little Shiloh 40-65 didn't disappoint, doe#1 62 yards broadsided, punches both shoulders, 10 yard run and crash, doe#2, 200 yards broadsided, bullet struck three inches behind the shoulder crease, 25 yard death run, complete penetration, what a fun way to start the season, had both deer down by 8:40 a.m. CST, they're both at the processor, butcher said I'd be eating them by Tuesday. cool

2) 98 mauser sporter in 9.3x62 with 286 hornady sp-rp.
3) Winchester 94 in 30-30 with factory 150 grain core-lokts.
4) S&W Model 29 with either 240 xtp or 255 WFN hardcast.

Gunner has it going. He sent me pictures on my cell phone of the two deer, both had absolutely perfect bullet placement . Barrel sights, no scope, and a 40 caliber Sharps with paper patched bullets and black powder. Both the 62 yard shot and the 200 yard shot showed perfect straight line penetration and complete pass through. This ain't an accident, guys. These guns are the Real Deal when you know how to use them, and Gunner has done his homework and put in the trigger time. Now it is paying off, big time.

Thanks for the flowers Sharpsguy, that hunt, and being fortunate enough to get on two deer so fast, then dispatch them with two clean quick kill hits was a pure blast, as much work as horsing into the brush then horsing them back out to the truck for dressing and icing down put me on a tired high that lasted till bedtime last night, the good feeling is running strong this morning over coffee, hunting is truly an enjoyable and most satisfying sport.

Particularly after mowing, brush hogging, spraying and weed eating damn near eight months this year ;]

Hope the rest of you men will stop back by this thread and share your kills with stories and picks. smile

glenfield 30-30 with federal 150 grain blue box ammo
Posted By: woodmaster81 Re: Deer Guns this year? - 10/16/17
Depending on weather and the stand I choose, any of the following:

Savage M 10 rebarreled to 250 Savage using 117 gr Hornady RN over 34.5 gr H414
Savage 99 in 38/55 with factory Winchester 250 gr soft points
Winchester 1910 in 401 WSL using Buffalo Arms
Standard Arms Model G in 35 Rem using factory 150 gr Remington Core-Lots
Savage 930 12 ha with Federal sabot using Barnes slugs

Bad weather gun

Savage M 16 in 7mm/08 with either 154 gr Hornady RN over unremembered powder or 140 gr Federal Fusions

If it becomes necessary to hunt black powder season:

54 cal T/C Renegade using conical bullet and 75 grs FFg

I'm not expecting shots of any great distance which explains the rifle and bullet choices.

Posted By: mmgravy Re: Deer Guns this year? - 10/19/17
Here first morning of the deer season I will be hunting with a Remington 722 in .300 Savage, made in 1948 according to the barrel code. If the weather is crappy, I will use a coated 700 9 twist Roberts that shoots 110 Accubonds and 117 Hornady RN's into the same small group. After opening morning, who knows....

Out in western South Dakota later in November, I will be using my favorite rifle, an 8 twist custom M70SA .220 Swift spewing 75 grain Berger VLD's or possibly a new 6mm Creedmoor that loves 105 JLK's. Earlier this month I used the Swift in Montana to shoot an antelope buck with the VLD. I parked the VLD in his ribs and the buck turned and fell over.

Like most everyone else here, I have a whole bunch of guns and deciding which one to hunt with is tough. However, I've decided, I think, that the gun I'd most like to bloody this year is my Lipsey's Ruger M77 African .275 Rigby. After a few different scopes I've mounted, and changed out, it's finally topped with a Swaro Z3 3-10 w/BRH reticle.

Yep, that's the one, but, my Sako needs lovin' too. And then there's the new Cooper...aw, hell, who knows. grin

Louisiana does a special veterans hunt next weekend. It's only appropriate that I use the 223. This one a Savage LWH firing a 64gr Nosler Bonded. The second weekend is primitive weapons. Here we can use break action single shots. Mine will be a CVA 44 Magnum driving a 240 grain Swift A-Frame. I'll rotate in a Ruger Hawkeye Predator 6.5 CM, a Ruger Hawkeye Ultralight 7-08, a Ruger Mk2 Ultralight 257 Roberts and a Howa 6.5x55.

Going to start with my Ruger M77 MarkII in 280Rem. It's the first quality rifle I ever owned and I've had it for about 10yrs now. The only animal I've ever seen with that rifle in my hands was a coyote that didn't survive the encounter. I plan to carry it until I get a deer with it. 140gr NBT over IMR4831 at a leisurely 2830fps.

If I can get the first kill with that rifle, I've got a whole safe full of choices for the rest of the season. Really wanting to get a deer with a 243 and a 223.

For KY I’ll use my .260 with a 120 grain ETip.
Or the 708 with 120 BT

But for IN will start with my suppressed 243 with 105 hybrid. Someone told me they kill deer most assuredly dead....

Ready for this year:
1954 Remington 760 BDL in 35 Rem. with real nice wood.
Remington 700 Classic in 6.5x55.
Ruger 44 finger grove Carbine
Robert Hart 700 in 338 Federal
Ruger American in 450 BM.
As with most folks the style of hunting and weather will have a large factor in what gets carried each day.
Best of luck to all.

Those 44 finger groove carbines are real bad about jamming ,but I'll take it off your hands.
Muzzleloader is first here and I'll use the trusted TC Omega .50 cal.

For ohio...in line muzzle loader like always...90 grains of powder and a saboted Hornady pistol bullet. For Pennsylvania, 6.5x55. Have not decided but probably a Hornady 129 with imr4350.

The 25-06 Rem 700 CDL, 6x Leupold & 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip combo worked well again last weekend:

It's become my favorite deer rifle over the past 12 years.

Guy
We are heading out tomorrow for a whitetail hunt.. Most likely the last deer hunt of the season. Don't travel out of state any more, and with my fine dogs, I would soon chase birds than bucks.. Plus we have a local elk season that runs though the first of the year..

Already got one nice mulie with my #1 in .300 H & H.. 165 gr. Sierra BTHP..

Taking the following with me.. Conditions change on this hunt so here goes..

My adl .22-250 with 63 gr Sierra semi pointed... This is mainly my turkey rifle.. But over the years it has killed a pile of deer when hunting out of state..
My adl .25-06 with 100 gr. Sierra flat base.. Lots of deer and antelope have fallen to this one also.
My custom 7mm Rem, Mag. This is my back up rifle incase a long long shot must be taken.. My wife's favorite the last years she hunted..
The #1 .300 H & H mentioned earlier..
A BDL in .375 H & H with 300 gr. WW Silvertips..Haven't used this one much.. It has taken antelope, moose, and elk.. Sometimes we hunt heavy brush in the bottoms.. Ideal for that..
Have a good save hunt..

In VA, it's ML first, in two weeks, then two weeks later on this side of the Blue Ridge, anything goes through the first week in January.

WV rifle season opens the Monday of Thanksgiving week, runs for two weeks, followed by a week of ML, then odd bits of antlerless season.

It'll be my Knight Ultralight first followed by my as-yet unblooded 1948 FN .270, then anybody's guess after that. I've got a new Ruger 1V .243, a CZ 6.5 Grendel, my trusty Hawkeye Predator .308, and the Remington Model Six .30/06 I traded into yesterday. Kinda leaning towards the Grendel because I've never whacked one with one of those.

Got a .223 Hawkeye in the pipe for next week, in case I want to try my hand at stunt-shooting.
Pappy, have fun, I sure miss hunting those states..

I have a few different ones. However the one I use the most is my Remington 750 Woodsmaster Carbine 30-06. I have a Leupold VX-2 2-7x33 Scope on it. It's my 2 to 200 yard gun. It's nice and handy with it's 18.5" barrel and the scope works good in the woods.

NYH1.

Using the same rifle I used last year. I built this Kimber Classic from a very early 84M that was a nice shooting 7-08, but I was wanting a 243 and have another Kimber 7-08 so the early one became a donor.
Adam Bentley of Dresdon Gun Company did the rebarrel, action truing and bluing while I did the stock.

Browning FN 98 mauser, their short lived cut-down small ring, chambered 280 Rem with 150g ELD-X

37 3/4" buck??
Moose, glad you like those December seasons.. Haven’t there for several years.. Used to hunt. Each year in Clearfield Co. but those hunts are pretty much over as the camp sold.. Used a lot of long range rifles in one area.. Guess I miss the hunts, but give me Oct. every time for hunting..
Center, nice buck and rifle.. I bought a book of Idaho’s Greatest Mule Deer.. They killed some monsters in years past..

T/C Contender Carbine with MGM 21" bull, chambered in 357 Magnum.. either 158 XTP or 180 Cast WFNGC, or...

T/C Hawken, 50 caliber patched roundball, though I may try the Lee R.E.A.L. bullets this year if I can get them to shoot right quick, or...

Custom Ruger 77 UL, Roberts with the Barnes 100 grain "Blue Meanies", or...

If I can lure one close enough, my Ruger Flattop Blackhawk Lipsey's Stainless 5.5" 357 magnum, shooting an RCBS 38-150 cast from straight wheelweights.

or the old standbys...

Custom Remington 7, 250 Savage with 100 grain Ballistic Tips, or...

Winchester 70, 30-06, with 150 grain Ballistic Tips.

I had high hopes of picking up something else before the season, but even if I do now, I'll never have the time to wring it out. I've been wanting to get back into shooting nothing but cast bullets, vintage levers, and single shots...I miss those days.

I need to get a better picture, it has eye guards that are an inch wide and 3 inches long. A big old buck for sure. I remember my grandpa complaining about how tough and chewy he was. lol
Posted By: szihn Re: Deer Guns this year? - 11/03/17
Well I got my buck on the last day of the season in my area. Tuesday the 31st of Oct. A big bodied 4X4 mule deer. I hunted 8 days and could not find any bucks to shoot. Either there were none, or none I wanted to shoot because they were so small.

At about 45 minutes after shooting light on the 31st I shot a heavy 4X4.

I grabbed the same rifles I used last year as I walked out the door at 5:30 AM. A full-stock M98 Mauser in 8X57 I made for myself.
I used a Hornady SST 170 grain. I hit the buck as it came towards me at the juncture of it's neck and shoulder. Bang-flop.

The bullet went through the neck and both lungs and tore up the liver too, but I lost it in the gut pile. I found shards of copper and lead in the neck so I know it was breaking up a little bit. My load, from my short 18" barrel, is only 2450 FPS and the range was 140 years. In my gun this load shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards.

I killed deer and elk with this load last year, and I think the bullet is a bit too prone to come apart. I am happy with it on deer if the angle is right, but I didn't get much penetration on last years bill elk. I killed it OK, but the best penetration I have seen with this bullet so far is about 20"

Sorry, no pics. I didn't take the camera with me. I bunched the deer about 6 hours ago.
I'll go back out for my elk next week, and I'll try to get one with my 9.3X57 with a 250 gr Nosler Accu-Bond bullet.
If the elk are not in the high brush and trees and I can't get within 300 yards I'll have my old 300H&H along in camp. It's on of my "cheating guns" so if the season get close to the end and I can;'t get a close shot as I like to, I'll break out the 300.

Today is the first day of our regular Modern Gun Deer Season. I took the 284 Win and killed a 138 lb. Doe at 60 yards.
I had a Button Buck at 30 yards, could see bumps thru the scope. I don't shoot dinks. IF he lives he'll be an antlered buck next year and larger each year after that.

To the best of my 'recon-collection' this is the 13th rifle including mzldrs that I have killed a deer with THE FIRST day I hunted it. I was hoping today would work that way but wasn't overly worried about it. I like it when a plan comes together.

I have PIX but since photo-puke it holds my pix hostage, I don't upload pix to them and for the time being I'm just not doing pix.

Since Saturday I have passed up several Does and a 1 1/2 yo, 5 pt. I have already seen more deer so far this season than ALL of last yr's season combined.

Yesterday AM I had just gotten to where I was going to begin still hunting and I intercepted a buck trailing 1 of 2 Does in front of him. He had his head down and NONE of them had seen me. I said "HEY"! and he raised his head for the last time. I was already on my shooting sticks and when I shot he dropped so fast I didn't see him fall. I then looked and he was laying on the ground 135 yds away.

The 139 HBTSP punched THROUGH his neck and exited. He had a main frame 8 pt rack but his left side was broken off. He measured 16 1/4" across to the break point. He weighed 150 lbs. whole.

It's a very good season so far. I don't know how long I'll hunt the 284 this season, but I'm not thru yet. smile

Today is the opening of gun here, but I sat it out, gusting to 40mph this morning. Cold front moves in this afternoon and it will be in the 30's tonight.

Tomorrow morning I'll hunt a Winchester 1895 in 30/40 Krag
Went out in light rain this morning with my Alaska proof Model 70 in .458, topped off with Leupy 2-7 and loaded with 300gn Barnes TSX's designed for the .45/70, though mine are loaded to 2600fps or so.

Rain turned to thunder storms then lightening so had to call it quits after about 4 hours. No deer but a good test for the clobber and gear......

Got rained on twice............Ruger RSI..............that and the idiot drivers on the road..............had me full rage by the time I got home.
Shoulda bought a cheap CVA Hunter in stainless for the crap weather.
Wet but warm enough, now temps dropping and wind is rippin'.

Creek was up but not bad first trip out. Couple hrs later it was up a foot.

Moisture and wind...........it's gonna be a tough hunt tomorrow.

Had a little 6 come by when in stand 1st trip. Saw 3 does too.
On way to stand 2nd attempt..........bumped a 100" 8 pt. He stopped at 60 and I was on his shoulder.............and said "not today".

Watch that be the best deer I see for the next 2 weeks LOL.

I do not want to hunt late season bow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot about this thread but I killed another buck with my 284. He was walking straight away from me and didn't know I was anywhere around.
Again OFF the shooting sticks I shot him in the back of the neck. 1 shot DRT (drop right there) He was a middlin 6 pt BUT weighed 175 #.

I'm after a cull buck now. iF I get him I know someone who will post pix for me.

I primarily hunted deer this year with my 1942 Longbranch Enfield SMLE 303. I didn't take a deer this year, I had my Elk early and didn't really need the meat. I didn't get a good opportunity at a nice buck, so I let the rest walk.

Nice rig.....you think hunting with a .35 rem you would see a visible hole in your deer.

No killing yet. I have come to really enjoy lightweight rifles with 20 inch barrels. They fit in between the shooting rails of my 2 person ladder stand. I leave them resting on my lap most of the time. Ruger UL 7mm-08, Savage LWH 6.5 Creedmoor, Ruger UL 257 Roberts and Savage LWH 223. The savage rifles are appreciably more accurate than the Rugers, but it matters not where we hunt. A 100 yard shot would be long. Leupold Glass on all of them. Sorry I can't figure out how to post pics, but here's a link.

Paul, I understand. I got a Ruger 77 UL 308 shortly after they came out. I thoroughly enjoyed hunting it in close quarters.

I honestly can't remember which I got first. Ruger UL or Win 70 XTR FTWT ? ? THOSE 2 are the reason I've been hooked on 'light' rifles since @1981.

Brad, that's a beautiful whitetail buck. The symmetry looks perfect and the tall brow tines are awesome.

This year I used these rifles:

25-264 improved custom Remington Model 700 (HS Precidion stocked)

25 Souper Custom Winchester Model 88
35 Remington Model 760 Remington
223 T/C Contender with 16” SSK Barrel and rifle stock

I'm changing things up here at the end of my season.

I have 3 days after Christmas and I broke out my 70 Black Shadow 300 WM last night. I put a new scope on it before season and I like the rifle/stock/scope/cartridge. During these 3 days Does & Bucks are legal.

I'm really focused on a particular FREAK buck.

Well done men, a lot of good hunting this year, I took six deer this year, five with a 40-65 Sharps rifle with 400 gr paper patch bullets and one with a 45-110 Sharps and 530 gr paper patch bullets.

It was a hell of a year. smile

Rifle season I took a nice buck with the ol 270, early 70s M700BDL, PacNor barrel, B&C Alaskan II stock, VXII 3-9x42. 140 gr Hornady Interlock sp.
hope to get a doe in the late doe season with a 1979 Marlin 336, rebored to 38-55, shooting homecast 250 gr bullets at around 1600 fps

That's a whole doggone herd of deer! And with a couple of real interesting rifles.

Congrats.

Thanks Guy, I rattled up two of the bucks and caught the other four deer slipping around, once I bit the Sharps Rifle bait I was hooked hard, nothing like hunting with them, the blackpowder BOOM and plumes of smoke only add to the excitement of the hunt, not to mention hearing the very audible KAWHUMPPP at 200 yards of a 4 to 500+ grain chunk of lead leaving the bore at pedestrian speeds of 1300 to 1400 fps.

Taking my Backpowder powered 50-90 Sharps to Africa and smacking a giant Cape Eland and a big old blue/black Sable bull with 750 gr bullets I cast myself put a damn good cap on a fine year in the game woods, fields and thickets. smile

I mostly only hunt elk, with an occasional antelope thrown in. Antelope are my favorite eating animal.

Swede, I hunted the elk opener, then my wife had surgery so I sat out a couple weeks. Spent six nights in a tent, hunted nine total days in the highcountry, saw 12 bulls, passed on a middlin-sized 6pt I tracked to his bed, but didn't get on the two actual shooters I saw. Also went to a friends ranch for a morning and watched about 75 elk, but all there was in the group were a few ragheads, small 5 pt's and 4 pt's.

I'm happy to eat tag soup if I can't find the animal I want!

Thanks Brad.

I might get that focused IF I had those opportunities.

I've never eaten Antelope but have had Elk. I found it a little dry compared to WT but I do like the taste and flavor.

When WT are properly treated from death to freezer, WT are some good eating. Most people I know freeze the meat too soon. They don't give it time to AGE before freezing. I did the same until I stumbled onto 'aging' from a processor.

Thnx Again

I currently use a Kimber Montana 270WSM with 110gr Barnes TSX hand loads, TC Venture 30-06 with 110gr Barnes TSX hand loads, and an AR in 6.8 SPC with 95gr Barnes hand loads. All work very well in Central Texas on Axis, hogs, and WT.
Posted By: TheKid Re: Deer Guns this year? - 12/24/17
I hunted deer with lots of tools this year and could go again since season is still on but likely won’t as we have three in the freezer.

Archery, 50# Martin X200 I bought when I was 15. Carbon Express 400s with 5” sheild cut feathers and Magnus broadheads.

Muzzleloader, .50 caliber Lyman trade rifle flintlock with 70gr of FFFg Goex real black under a roundball in a pillowcase patch greased with bear lard.

Rifle season I hunted with my M70 XTR I rebarreled to 257WBY and put in an Extreme Weather takeoff, using 100gr Nosler Solid bases over 73gr of 7828. My AR using 53gr TSX over CFE223. My Remington Model 30 Express 30/06 shooting S&B 150gr SPCEs. And my wife used her FN Mauser I barreled and stocked for her in 270 with a shilen blank I contoured at about a 1 1/2 and a Claro blank I had Ed Shulin turn before he passed.

I shot a doe with the 257, 100yds quartered away, souped the lungs and shredded the heart, 20 yard run. Shot a middling sized 8 point with the AR, 100 or so yards right in the throat patch, he died. And the wife shot a big one horn buck with the 257 at about 40 yards, found the bullet under the hide when I was cutting him up, 43% retained weight and pretty easy on meat considering the impact speed. I shot a big hog at 12 yards with the 06 right smack in the shoulder, no exit but he only made it about 25 yards before he crashed and burned, he stunk to high heaven so no butchering took place, quick picture and left him for the buzzards.

There ya go !

With our POPCORN temps it's not often we have 40*ish temps that many days in a row. In years with cold WX I like to leave 'gutted-rinsed'
deer hanging a week. Usually 3-5 days is more the norm.

Marlin 1895G 45-70 with factory Hornady 325 FTX. First time I hunted with factory ammo since my slug gun days but I didn’t have time to work up loads on a new rifle. Whitetail doe at 60 yards and 4x4 buck at about 40. I have a late anterless tag that is muzzleloader or handgun only and will probably try the S&W 629 with 245gr cast handloads. Perfect aging weather so they both hung 7 days and the buck was then quartered in a cooler for a few more while we rearranged freezer space.

Care to share your load particulars?

This afternoon I went to my target backstop, a big pile of dirt. I found 4 small rocks & placed them far enuff apart that shooting each one would not mess up the other. I was +/- 100 yds away and 'took my time' between shots.

I watched each one turn into a 'SMOKE'. cool
This is the first time I've shot this gun since sighting the new scope in. Yes it's more than I need, Yes it does kick, Yes it makes me smile. grin

Incidentally, we had several hrs. of continuous rain Friday into Fri. PM. I had 3 1/2" in less than 24 hrs. About 4 PM yesterday I noticed deer feeding. I got my scope to check them out closer. NO AMMO in the gun. At one time I had TWELVE (12) deer in my scope AT THE SAME TIME. wink

I'm looking forward to these last 3 days of M G deer season. grin

Follow Up !

Yesterday I saw only 1 Fawn, about 1/2 grown in the AM. At 4:30-4:45 I saw 5 and only 1 was a grown Doe. The problem was the grown one was on a plane (level) that was NOT safe to shoot. So Tues. total of 6.

This AM - nada, zip, nothing. I heard 4 different hunters shoot in 4 different directions. All were between 7:00-7:30 AM.

This PM I only had 2 to come in visibility. 1 Grown Doe and 1 smaller. I saw them thru limbs with NO clear shot.

We are below average temps but no precip. When I got to where I could see the moon at 5:30 PM it was directly overhead.
Tonight we're supposed to be 18-20* with N E winds. Tomorrow is the LAST of 3 days after Christmas.

Immediately following - Fri, Sat, Sun, we have Muzldr season. I haven't shot my Mzld in a long time. I may have to break it out.

Good Luck Guys,

Jerry

LAST Follow Up.

NO, nothing, NADA, Zip - dern.

For the last day of M G season, I saw nothing in the AM, then one 1/2 pint.

I've hunted Mzld and saw NOTHING w/in range. Yesterday AM I had a Doe @ 300 yds out. My barrel ain't that LOOOOONG.
Today I saw 2 fawns between 4:10- 5:00 PM

I DON'T shoot DINKS. No apology!

BaDuh, BaDuh, That's ALL folks for this year.

I gave it my best shot. I saw MORE deer this year than all last year. It was much more interesting and had a good time.

Hope all y'all had great seasons.

grin, Wifey had a blast on this trip, she was a bit hesitant on going at first, but after day two she was hooked forever, BTW, as tough as she was, she got invited by my PH to a camp for my next Safari in Mozambique that has historically been off limits to women, I'm very proud of her.

The Eland bull was shot bedded at 60 yards, I hit him in the right hip, the skinners found the 750 gr bullet from the 50-90 Sharps in his left shoulder, he dropped his head at the shot, I ran up and put another one in his last rib on the left side, you can see that half inch hole in the pic, it exited the offside behind the shoulder like he was made of cardboard.
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Deer Guns this year? - 01/02/18
The Sable bull was shot at 97 yards off sticks, I hit the set trigger and began pressing the front trigger, an instant before the explosion of 110 grains of OE FFG powder the bull took a step forward, the 750 gr bullet from the 50-90 clipped the liver, we were instantly on the blood trail at dusk, the PH notified us there were lions and buffalo in the area and that we should come back in the morning, I didn't sleep well that night, we found the bull at first light, he had just died, rigor hadn't set in and he was still warm, a very bittersweet deal with him.

Not Brad -

If temp is below 50*, I leave the hide on. The external surface of the meat does NOT dry out. It won't ruin as many think. I've been doing this since 1985 at least.

Thinking about one with reflex sight.

I like low sitting reflex with co-witness irons.

What’s the best set up?

DF
Posted By: rost495 Re: Deer Guns this year? - 01/02/18
Not sure, but I researched and came back to the RMR LED non adjustable. Slide is off to be milled right now.

I'm probably past the point of being confident at 50-75 yards with irons any more. When I was shooting for my distiguished pistol badge and you shot irons only and offhand one handed at 50.... I was better with irons

I"m fairly sure i"m going to end up with a match have to fit on my own 6 inch threaded bar sto barrel too eventually... so that once I"m good with the RMR I can make the glock a 100 yard deer pistol. Lol I have a contender with scope for that but this is more fun...

I"m not sure I"ll co witness the sights right off the bat, but I'd LOVE to have an aperture rear and taller front, and probably need them later for a can anyway... damn bought an expensive sight too for the glock rear and it won't work with aperture rear like ghost ring.. but i may be able to find someone to mill and make work.....

All I know so far is that 4 deer down and I don't think any have made it more than 40 steps. I've yet to not see one fall. Most run a bit, then stand there until weak and maybe make a tiny lunge or dash.

HadsDad, I just saw your post. Sorry it took me so long.
My load is a PPU case, Winchester LR Primer 46.5 grains of IMR4895 and a Hornady SST 170 grain bullet.

Good load for deer, but not quite up to snuff for elk. I know.....I killed a nice 5X5 bull last year with it and the bullets didn't penetrate as deep as I like.

I killed the bull, but I will not use 170 gr SST again on elk. I am going to stay with 180 grain GMX or Barnes X, and go back to 200 grain Nosler partitions for elk.
Here is a long winded report I posted on Midway's site.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/8...meter-170-grain-sst-boat-tail-box-of-100
Copy and paste the link and click on the icon for "reviews" then read the reports from the bottom up.

Here is a picture of the 2 recovered bullets from last years bull and one of the same bullets split in half lengthwise so you can see how well they did, and how the bullet is constructed.

Yeah, I shot pistol matches at LSU when I was but a youth.

Many years and a few eye surgeries, I'm past pistol irons.

So many good products, I'm trying to figure what's best for what I want to do.

Sounds like you're pretty close to having what I'm looking for.

Great news Rost, I had my 1911 10mm on my belt a few times this year, it's loaded with 200 gr XTP's, glad to know they'll work too, ordered 300 sticks of Starline 10mm brass on Midway this morning, it's on clearance sale, iirc it was 17 bucks for a bag of 100.

LMAO JWall, you remind me of my BIL over in Ar, he's told me "NO SPIKES AND FORKED HORNS" a dozen times over the years. laugh

And Thanks for the compliment.

My health issues have me wanting to start working on getting some decent guns to hand down to my son and daughter. Ellie has shown some recent interest in hunting, so it looks like a bolt action .223 or .243 with one of those Muddy Girl stocks on it. She'd love it-unless I could find something with a zebra striped stock. She'd love that even more.

Eric's little babe will need a gun too. Hoping to find a nice 99 chambered for .243 for her.

Eric will be getting a 99 and he's a big fan of .308, so I'll be looking for one of those too.

I'll also pick up each of the kids a 10/22. Every kid ought to have a 10/22.

If Ellie continues to show more interest in shooting she'll need a shotgun. Something in a 20 gauge.

Decisions, decisions!

Today is the first day of our regular Modern Gun Deer Season. I took the 284 Win and killed a 138 lb. Doe at 60 yards.

I have PIX but since photo-puke it holds my pix hostage, I don't upload pix to them and for the time being I'm just not doing pix.

Jerry

Since Saturday I have passed up several Does and a 1 1/2 yo, 5 pt. I have already seen more deer so far this season than ALL of last yr's season combined.

Yesterday AM I had just gotten to where I was going to begin still hunting and I intercepted a buck trailing 1 of 2 Does in front of him. He had his head
down and NONE of them had seen me.

I don't know how long I'll hunt the 284 this season, but I'm not thru yet. smile
This is the first 284 Win I've ever had. It does work!
Jerry

I forgot about this thread but I killed another buck with my 284. He was walking straight away from me and didn't know I was anywhere around.
Again OFF the shooting sticks I shot him in the back of the neck. 1 shot DRT (drop right there) He was a middlin 6 pt BUT weighed 175 #.

I'm after a cull buck now. iF I get him I know someone who will post pix for me.

Jerry

PIX Update for my Season:

This is my M 98 (Faux R 77 :D) 284 Win. It's in a Boyd's Walnut stock, Timney Trigger, & ? Douglas Light Sporter Bll.? not sure about that. 21"
My load is Surplus 4831 - 139 HBTSP - 3000 fps (2986 avg.)

Opening Day, Doe, First time hunted the rifle. smile

First Week, this buck was trailing 2 Does, shot him off my sticks. Main frame 8 pt but broken.

Then 3rd Week of Season, I was sick & not hunting BUT this Buck was w/a Doe at back of my pasture. He was walking straight away and I shot him in back of the neck -- off sticks. He is only a middlin 6 pt but weighed 175 # whole. The bullet hit at the top of neck/base of his head.
It literally KNOCKED his NOSE in the DIRT. laugh

I may be making a mistake by NOT getting a 'new to me rifle'. For more years than I can remember I've always 'done good' hunting a new rifle.

Might tote a Marlin 30/30 or a Winchester Featherweight 270 some. Might grab the Kimber Montana if I decide to climb.

Toted those in bold so far. Taken deer with the 700 in 260 and the Muzzleloader.

Update: toted those in bold.
Took deer with the TC muzzleloader, 700 in 260 and today a doe with the Tikka 260.

Season is over now. Time to clean clothes, clean rifles, and put stuff away until next Fall. It's been a pretty good deer season.

Congrats, Nut.

It's always fun to have a good season. Last year That Super Moon surely put our deer to Nocturnal. I wound up killin a few but spent many days NOT seeing deer. This year was much better. I know the feeling.

jwall,

Thanks. Definitely had a better year this year. Saw a bunch today, but was looking for a mature doe to round out the freezer stock. Shot this girl right at sundown. Will turn her into steaks and summer sausage to go with the other game taken this Fall.

Good looking bucks !!

That’s 1 of my FAV stocks too. I don’t remember the correct name for the other one but it’s
marbled blue & little white.
