Today is the first day of our regular Modern Gun Deer Season. I took the 284 Win and killed a 138 lb. Doe at 60 yards.
I had a Button Buck at 30 yards, could see bumps thru the scope. I don't shoot dinks. IF he lives he'll be an antlered buck next year and larger each year after that.

To the best of my 'recon-collection' this is the 13th rifle including mzldrs that I have killed a deer with THE FIRST day I hunted it. I was hoping today would work that way but wasn't overly worried about it. I like it when a plan comes together.

I have PIX but since photo-puke it holds my pix hostage, I don't upload pix to them and for the time being I'm just not doing pix.

Since Saturday I have passed up several Does and a 1 1/2 yo, 5 pt. I have already seen more deer so far this season than ALL of last yr's season combined.

Yesterday AM I had just gotten to where I was going to begin still hunting and I intercepted a buck trailing 1 of 2 Does in front of him. He had his head down and NONE of them had seen me. I said "HEY"! and he raised his head for the last time. I was already on my shooting sticks and when I shot he dropped so fast I didn't see him fall. I then looked and he was laying on the ground 135 yds away.

The 139 HBTSP punched THROUGH his neck and exited. He had a main frame 8 pt rack but his left side was broken off. He measured 16 1/4" across to the break point. He weighed 150 lbs. whole.

It's a very good season so far. I don't know how long I'll hunt the 284 this season, but I'm not thru yet. smile
This is the first 284 Win I've ever had. It does work!

Opener is tomorrow morning here. I'll carry the same rifle as last year, VZ-24 with a Yugo surplus barrel, parkerized, topped with a Weaver 4x38, in a "Coyote Bomber" McMillan with a Bandera "Chisum" sling.

8x57 of course,

200gr Hot-Cor over 53.1gr of CFE223.

Today is the opening of gun here, but I sat it out, gusting to 40mph this morning. Cold front moves in this afternoon and it will be in the 30's tonight.

Tomorrow morning I'll hunt a Winchester 1895 in 30/40 Krag

Went out in light rain this morning with my Alaska proof Model 70 in .458, topped off with Leupy 2-7 and loaded with 300gn Barnes TSX's designed for the .45/70, though mine are loaded to 2600fps or so.

Rain turned to thunder storms then lightening so had to call it quits after about 4 hours. No deer but a good test for the clobber and gear......

Got rained on twice............Ruger RSI..............that and the idiot drivers on the road..............had me full rage by the time I got home.
Shoulda bought a cheap CVA Hunter in stainless for the crap weather.
Wet but warm enough, now temps dropping and wind is rippin'.

Creek was up but not bad first trip out. Couple hrs later it was up a foot.

Moisture and wind...........it's gonna be a tough hunt tomorrow.

Had a little 6 come by when in stand 1st trip. Saw 3 does too.
On way to stand 2nd attempt..........bumped a 100" 8 pt. He stopped at 60 and I was on his shoulder.............and said "not today".

Watch that be the best deer I see for the next 2 weeks LOL.

I do not want to hunt late season bow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Killed this Buck with My 7mm Mag Beretta Mato 140 tsx 6x42 Leupold.
Carried my .223 Faux Ti 700 for the first 5 days of the season and then pulled old Faithful out of the safe. The old Mato always seems to pull in the Deer.

Got several that need breaking in, but I believe I'll start tomorrow with the CZ Grendel. After that, it depends on the weather and my fickle nature.

Up until last week, didn't think I would have the chance to go. Pretty excited to get out into the field.

I forgot about this thread but I killed another buck with my 284. He was walking straight away from me and didn't know I was anywhere around.
Again OFF the shooting sticks I shot him in the back of the neck. 1 shot DRT (drop right there) He was a middlin 6 pt BUT weighed 175 #.

I'm after a cull buck now. iF I get him I know someone who will post pix for me.

Might tote a Marlin 30/30 or a Winchester Featherweight 270 some. Might grab the Kimber Montana if I decide to climb.

Toted those in bold so far. Taken deer with the 700 in 260 and the Muzzleloader.
