many threads will we have?

This is a book with over 1000 pages listing cartridges.

Will we need as many threads?

Recently we had:

.300 Savage for elk
Elk with a .270
.30-30 for elk what bullet...
.338 Federal (you guessed it) for elk
7mm-08 what bullet for elk of all things
8x57 Mauser - for elk
7 Rem. Mag. - special new kind corelokt for elk?
.264 Win Mag. for elk

Here is it Elk hunting in a nut shell:

Cartridges are more alike then different.

Placement, bullet, cartridge (if in doubt - .30-06 Sprg.)

Wool and hunt the wind.

Best binos you can afford.

Scope is secondary - midrange variable (max. 10x).
Pick a reliable one.

Physical condition is more important than MOA - best is both.

Plan for when you have your elk down - logistics.

Above are not mine, just bits picked up around the fire.
I thank other posters for their contributed wisdom.

Rant over. Flame on.

yep! one could condense all those words down to just 7. "get a 30-06 and some 180gr partitions" but what would folks argue/debate then?

Wool? That's sooo 70's.

Yeah, cmg - there are more different cartridges avail than animal species to be hunted.

It gets pretty funny sometimes, but I enjoy learning about how someone did with their "whatever" cartridge & bullet anyway.

Regards, Guy

Guy - true that.

It is not so much the "I did" - thread that enerve me, but the "seek advise, but want approval" - threads.

Brad,

thought you would.

Smokepole,

nothing wrong with that, right. Worked then, works now.

Wool is....old school. Old school works.

You mean, like a .30-06 or a .270? Can't be, look at the cartridge threads. What'd you kill that one with, out of curiosity?
The only wool I like is between my wife's legs ;-)
They say the good wool doesnt itch......laffin!

You're not very bright though... (grin).

Huh?
Posted By: leverite2 Re: Elk cartridges - how ... - 08/02/10
Now that we got agreement on the caliber, we need a thorough discussion of the best bullet weight and type. crazy
Posted By: fyshbum Re: Elk cartridges - how ... - 08/02/10
I bet we all end up with either a TSX or Nosler Partition ! laugh

I could argue for the 200gr Swift A Frame or a 220 grain cup/core bullet. Or how about an M1 Garand using the bayonet for the final dispatch?

Too many bullets...too little time. smirk
Posted By: cole_k Re: Elk cartridges - how ... - 08/02/10
Or you could load up some 200 gr Partitions and be happy. grin

Yup, and when that is done (yeah, like it ever will be) then think of the all the bullet threads to follow! cry

Well, I subscribe to the "bigger is better" school. I think a greater bullet diameter's frontal area supplies more killing power.

That's exactly why I am creating a new series of elk cartridges:
.311-30
.311 BR
.311 Remington
.311-300 Savage
.311-308 (and the .311 x 62 Nato)
.311-06
.311 Russian

The only problem is that the sectional density of a .308 180 grain is superior to the sectional density of a 180 grain .311 bullet. It's a trade off between frontal surface area and penetration.

I may even bump some of them up to .313, depending on the bullet manufacturing offerings, and my final bore diameter, but the sectional density would be even lower for the 180 grain offering.

Was that a serious post? Not trying to degrade any effort, but I just can't tell.

The 7.62X54R is already a .311. So no need for your ".311 Russian".

No. Just having fun splitting hairs.

Best cartridge I've heard of recently is the 300-35 Whelen.

Take the venerable 35 whelen and neck it down to take the higher BC 308 cal bullets.

Should catch on.

Some, like me, would argue that just becaus the 30-06 is popular does not make it the best or most desired. Same goes for the Partitions.
Popular or not, the 06 has proven itself to beone of the best elk rounds that I have used..and Nosler partitions are the best bullets I have used. some like me will argue for the O6 and Noslers! smile

Not saying the .338, 375 etc are not good elk rounds, I have shot elk with both, but you can't tell much difference in the kill over a 30-06 with 200 gr. Noslers. With all of them the elk takes a hit in the shoulder and goes maybe 50 yards and tips over, or may drop at the shot, you never know. All of these calibers will shoot lengthwise through a bull and usually stop on the off side skin, or maybe go on through, with proper bullets like a Nosler, or a monolithic.
The 338 Win Mag stops the numbs Elk in their tracks with a 225 woodleigh. I rest my case.

Stars and Stripes Ammo, .30-06 with a 250 gr JSP at 2310 fps
I'm going on my first elk hunt this year. Can I kill an elk with a 30-06?

Now that's old fashioned! Not too many furry gals these days. The smooth look is in vogue...unfortunately.

I figure if I ever get to go elk hunting I'll take my Sears Roebuck FN mauser 30-06 with 4x Weaver along
