I didn't really care until I read the posts of the medical staff in North Italy. That struck home to me. Sure its not as deadly as a lot of things that we have had but watching the progression of it has given me some deep concerns. Its how our medical system can handle it. In Alaska we only have 200 kits and 137 of them have been used. Mostly by Dunleavy's family and staff. It gives me great pause. https://mackuba.eu/corona/#totalTaiwan took it most seriously and has had the greatest response. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762689To me its not that its particularly bad, but its everybody is not taking it seriously enough until the Cov19 monkey is throwing poo at the rest of us in the zoo.

We had the H1N1 flu in 2009 , killed 12k people here. More virulent then this one and yet nowhere near the panic . Go figure That's simple enough. In 2009, The Great Lord Obamacus Maximus Rex The Magnificent was President. The fawning Media were not about to attribute any "killer disease" to their Imperial Master. L.W.

Those that aren't looking seriously at this have their head in the sand. It's real, it's bad and it COULD get worse.
No the sky isn't falling, but they are trying to keep it from getting there.
The issue with this one is the geometric progression of unchecked spread. It has a doubling factor of 4 days if unchecked. This about that. 100,000 cases today, 200,000 by Monday, 400,000 by Friday..... Unchecked that's 2.4 MILLION cases by April 1. With a death rate of 1% (which is the lowest projection I've seen), that's 24,000 deaths.
Yes that's unchecked progression, and it is slowly steadying. and most/all countries are taken steps to slow it, so that's a worst case scenario, but this is real.
I, for now, have faith we are still looking at a shorter term state. Wife and I have a early June European vacation we haven't cancelled, YET. Hopefully this all blows over and we can go. Been looking forward to it for years.
You just have to be sane about this. consider where you are, what the current state is. If you are in cities where it has been found, isolate. IF not, don't worry, but track things. It's in pockets, avoid getting near the pockets. IF I still lived in NH where there are a decent amount of cases, wife and I wouldn't be doing much out for eating out, movies, etc. However I live in WY, very far from the 1 case found here. Not changing much if anything about our immediate plans. Hopefully it clears up by summer as there's no tourist flow here now, but come summer.....

Allergies have had me feeling like hammered dung since about the middle of January. This started about a year or two ago. In the past allergies were never an issue.
If I “stay home if you feel ill” I would not be able to get anything done. It would be like " you mean I had the corona virus all this time???? I thought I was suppose to feel like schidt!” Allergies used to plague me badly, but have been mild to nil for many years now. I guess the body's response can drift over time for whatever reasons. I still get a sneeze or a little sinus action occasionally, but nothing like the constant nose dripping misery I used to. I can generally tell the difference between allergy and a cold or flu though and have not had either for a long time.

But where had that one WY case traveled ,Bob, and who did that case (gender neutral ) have contact with? Did the WY patient drive in ? Fly? Ride a horse over from MT? And where did anyone that made contact end up? Local restaurant? Post Office chatting up the counter help and spewing spittle all over the counter there? Gneo

Just talked to a former co-worker and friend who lives in Bellvue, WA. His wife is a nurse practitioner. He just told me, the news isn't keeping up with the reality, but EMS and ambulances are running non-stop, and 60+ year olds are catching the virus left and right. Hospitals are on the brink of being filled and exhaustion is setting in. Officials have asked his wife, who runs a private practice, to be on call to fill in at the local hospitals, because the staff there will contract the virus, or at the very least, need rest.
Stay safe out there...

As an aside comment: a number of folks at the party I referenced in my earlier post eschewed handshakes. Instead, we were introduced to the "elbow bump." Upon meeting and greeting, both parties simply crook their elbows about 90 degrees at chest level and lightly bump elbows. Apparently this is viewed as less likely to transmit infection...???

I’ve been avoiding crowds during the cold and flu season since way before it was “cool”.
When I go to the Mayo Clinic, pretty much everyone on that entire campus is wearing surgical masks (patients and family).
No one is walking around chiding people saying “hey moron, masks don’t help”
But masks do help w/ other things.... That is the best they can do to replicate your approach since they have to deal w/ other people in close environments... Everyone knows people get sick in waiting rooms.. Much handled magazines, seldom cleaned chairs, old incontinent people.... No thank you sir, I like your approach. Keep your distance lady..

I'm 77, so I am in one of the most at-risk age groups. We just returned from a week in California, where we attended a large party with folks who came in from as far away as the states of Washington, Florida, New York and some of the New England states. We cruised the shopping centers in Carmel and strolled the beaches. We stayed at a B&B where we shared breakfast buffets in the morning with other visitors from God only knows where, but we did meet couples from England and Denmark. It looked like virtually all of the cars in the parking lot were rentals. In the evening, most of us were together again for wine and cheese on the deck overlooking the ocean. On the way home, we spent a couple of days with friends in Bakersfield, and met their high school age grand daughter who had just returned from Italy because her school there sent most of the foreign students home. Stay tuned for updates! Can I have your guns?
