Here is a WAG from me- I wouldn't be too concerned about getting top velocity from the 270, either. A few years ago I went from using a 7 Mag to shoot deer to a 270 loaded to about 7/08 levels, and it seemed to me the 270 with moderate loads killed even better than the 7 Mag with max loads.
John Barsness wrote an article about that time saying that perhaps bullets killed better at somewhat moderate velocities, and that surely correlated with my experience.
