I've only killed one bull elk with a .308 Win. so that doesn't count for much. No problem with putting the elk on the ground.

That said, my cousin (now deceased) killed 22 elk over the years with his Win. 70 Lightweight .308 Win. He was not a reloader so he used factory ammo. I asked him once what it was and he said he always used 180 grains PSP, Rem., Fed., Win. Didn't make much difference to him. He also killed an Idaho Shiras bull moose with it, a Black bear, plus many Mule deer.

A .308 Win. worked very well for him.
