I have a new unfired barrel for a Rem Model 700 in 30-06 that a friend gave me after he bought a rifle for the action to build a wildcat on. I'm thinking about removing the shot out 7mm barrel and replacing it with the 30-06 barrel since I don't have an 06 right now.

My question is two fold:

1) Do I also need to replace the bolt since the base dimensions for the 2 rounds are not the same. The 30-06 is slightly smaller in both base diameter and rim thickness but I don't know if it is enough to make a major difference.

2) Will I need to have any work done on the feed rails or will the 30-06 feed smoothly on the factory rails?

Any info that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Like another said above, stick with the magnum bolt - for one..

Two, Rem barrel contours prevent much setback beyond one thread due to the nearly immediate taper (something I've always disliked).

Three - DO a full and thorough cleaning of that bore before you do anything - then shoot about 20 rounds of factory ammo through it (no more than 3 at a time between cooling) before you try for accuracy.. If it's still crap, then go to #4:

Four - The 'new' 30-06 barrel could be used, just rechamber it to .300 Win Mag. You'd be able to keep the bolt as-is, the magazine and follower as-is and you'd have a round that is very versatile on a barrel with new rifling.. Only thing left to do then is 'X' out the 30-06 stamping on the barrel and change to 300WM and you're good to go..

FWIW..
