I'm a bit ahead of both of you and find that while my ability to use barrel mounted irons is compromised, receiver mounted peeps are still very usable.
Oh, No!! Ya ain't one foot ahead of me....(grin)
My M94 Winchester has the Williams FP, which is right in front of the hammer, and the Garand sight is basically in the same place. I can also handle my AR with the "Issue" sights, though I prefer a scope on it.
It's *IF* my close-in sight deteriorates to the point that I can't use them (receiver sights) that I'll really hate. I hope that when the time comes I can't see the receiver sights, it will be when my eyes aren't going to open anyway.
All else aside, I found a long time ago that receiver sights are far superior to a barrel mounted semi-buckhorn, and it is the first mod to a new rifle if it is to be used with irons.
