Because of the new Cabelas!

For the past few years, this Gander Mountain store has stocked its .22LR on a two-foot length of a single shelf. The rest of the shelving was stocked with other types of ammo. Most of the time, that little section of shelf was bare. Sometimes, a few boxes of CCI std. velocity at $5 per 50. (These are rows of chest-high shelves near the middle of the store.)

Call me a cynic, but I believe it was no accident - indeed, no coincidence - that on the first weekend of the new Cabela's, this Gander store stocked about five four-foot lengths of shelves completely full, front to back, of decent quality .22LR (not a single box of Thunderbolt) and no limit.

It was about 10:30-11:00 on the Saturday morning, and it was all just sitting there, like a freaking mirage. I should have taken a cell phone pic. I actually went in there to buy a box of factory center-fire rifle cartridges, and didn't expect to see any LR at all.

I still don't get it. For the last how many years, the factories were running at least 4 8-hour shifts each day (yes, I know), but no stores could get any. Now all of a sudden, people are reporting mountains of the stuff (with snow on top) sitting in stores. Why can they get such quanitities now when no one could get any at all a few months ago?

I doubt the mountain I saw is still there now. It was a marketing thing.

I may stop by next weekend to confirm, but I'm not ready to declare the panic over.

Oklahoma City, circa 1960-61, gas price wars and regular was 9 cents/gal. Usually in the high teens to low 20s.

Stamps were 3 cent as I recall. Good times.

I am..........disturbed.

When a dollar is just the monetary term for an ounce of silver, you can buy a lot of stuff with just a few of them.

I picked up a 1984 prospector round for $16 yesterday. I wish they would have had more. Over the last two weeks I've also picked up 600 rounds of CCI minimag HP's. It's been a two box a day limit but they had some in on 3 different days. They were about $8 a 100.
