Carved, this^^^. Squirrels are delicious and one must develop good hunting skills such as accurate shooting, stalking and vision. The most important aspect is spending time in the outdoors focusing on something refreshing and enjoyable as Davey Crockett or D Boone did. I have to hunt. I have no choice in the matter. carved.....your post is depressing, man. You're sure welcome to come hunt my 200 acres in Iowa, all September and half through October. We've got a few 22's for you to use, take your pick. Pick your ammo too. We also have a cabin you're welcome to use for the duration of your trip. We've got the biggest squirrels in the country, no matter with these forum city-slickers say. All for the cost of a non-resident small game license (and conservation stamp). A local gunshop has a barely used 455 LUX for $275. Been thinking about it, much as I do not need it. Consider yourself invited. PM if you're interested. We'll get back within a few days. I started posting on this forum a few weeks ago in hopes of getting some info that would allow me to decide whether to get a .22 or a .17 HMR, and what scope to go with the rifle. I used to own a Marlin Model 60, and have fond memories of having hunted with my grandfather and my uncles.
After weeks of letting my perfectionist tendencies get the better of me, and examining the details of various .22s and .17s, I decided to get a CZ 455 22LR, but not now.
I live in Connecticut. I'm sure many of you already know where this is going. In addition to a hunting license, ($28), I need to take ANOTHER firearms course to buy a certificate that will allow me to purchase a gun and/or ammo. This will be about $280 total, and must be renewed every five years at a cost of about $100, in addition to the cost of a new hunting license every year. As of February of this year, or governor has proposed increasing fees associated with all of this by another $25.
Having had my car struck by a car driven by a drunk illegal alien several years ago, and suffering a dislocated spine as a result, I have spent most of my savings on medical bills. I thought that I could tighten my belt and spend a few hundred for a nice bolt action rifle, something I've always wanted, but that won't be happening. I simply cannot afford to spend close to $1,000 to hunt a few squirrels.
As a silver lining to all of this, I know that the state will not be receiving any licensing fees from me in relation to all this.

You don't need a course you need to apply for a long gun permit. It is $35. Or a pistol permit. Nothing here costs $1000 yet.

I think he was including the cost of his potential new rifle. You don't need a course you need to apply for a long gun permit. It is $35. Or a pistol permit. Nothing here costs $1000 yet.

Hey guys, thanks for all the well-wishes. There has been quite a bit of kindness expressed in this thread.
Mike: I guess you know what you're talking about, if you're in CT also. Maybe I misunderstood. I was on the phone with the CT gov, read some of the CT general statutes, was on the phone with the NY gov, several retail stores in NY, a retailer in CT, and tried contacting the ATF without any answers that led me to believe that I wouldn't have to take the additional course.
Any way, the cost is not $35. At the very least, it's $101.50 according to the DEEP web page. The cost is $35 + fingerprinting fees. If this is all that's required, you're right, it certainly isn't insurmountable. I was of the impression that in addition to applying for the certificate, a course averaging $275 was needed also.
As for several things that were asked/mentioned:
-I had UI coverage. I won't get into the ins and outs of the case, but it was very complex. It was one of those "whatever could have gone wrong, did go wrong" situations that had all sorts of pitfalls including a lawyer that turned out to be a drug addict. Connecticut is the world capitol of insurance companies. Laws here favor them.
Like I say, there was a LOT that complicated the case immensely.
-As for "giving up the right", I agree with you in principle. I had decided in the interim between originally posting and now that I would be getting an air rifle, and would eventually be paying for the right to own a firearm, even if it might take a while.
-You do not need a hunting license to maintain ownership of a firearm. In the past, if you had a hunting license or a pistol permit, you could purchase a long gun by simply walking into a store. If you lacked either license, you needed to wait two weeks. To get a hunting licence, a free course had to be taken. The license was good for a year. If it was allowed to lapse for more than five years, then the course needed to be retaken. I think, though I'm not certain, that currently a license can be allowed to lapse longer than five years without needing to retake the course, since records of having taken the course are now computerized.

How do they handle muzzle loaders? Original style flintlocks and squirrels just seem to go together. Lots of fun there.

Get you a used pre 2010 marlin micro-groove rifled short barrel auto and with a good scope you can pick big flies off fresh cowpiles at 25 yds. Costs about 350 max.
Thats with a scope.
