Well, learned something new... everybody else probably knows it, but I've got a couple of questions. A post the other day had me looking at my G, and I noticed a stamped G in the wood on the top of the forearm stock in front of the hole you use to twist the barrel off. I thought, "Cool! A model stamp..". Then I looked, and darn if there wasn't a G stamped into the metal on the front of the receiver. Hmmm... 1940 99G with the model stamped into the front of the receiver.. 1945 EG? Yup... E and G stamped into the front of the receiver. 1901 1899B? Nope.. got a 2 stamped in it though. Mean something? Probably not.. 1902 1899C? Nope, has an O. Maybe 0/1/2 for model # stampings? 1904 1899A? Nope.. in fact, it's got a couple of weird stamps. Anyway, I was wondering exactly which models would have their model stamped on the front of the reciever, and what years it ran from? Gotta add it to my notes..

And... who's got a lettered RS from this period? REALLY curious whether they stamped the R's and RS's.

Calhoun,
Don't know if this will help, but I have a 99 that I BELIEVE to be an 'R' serial no. 343xxx. It only has an 8 (eight) stamped on the same place and side as your top pic.
I can't swear that it is an 'R' cause the wood was Bubba'ed. I'm going to get a letter just out of curiousity

An 8.. definitely not a mistruck R, eh?<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Okay, well that's more information. Maybe R's were never struck, or maybe 343xxx is before they started doing it.
Thanks Arkie.. Anybody else out there?

One "R", three "RS", 34xxxx-40xxxx...all stamped "8". Not all on the same side. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

It might not seperate the "R" from the "RS", but it might be a way to tell if it is in fact an "R"/"RS"!??
What do you think Rick?

Hi Cal,
I think T`s are stamped that way. All 5 of mine have a capital T on the upper right hand side [as you look at it] Bob

Five T's? Lucky man... thanks 3589. What serial number ranges are we looking at on the T's?
So we have a string of R's/RS's with 8's. T's with T.
Can anybody else verify their earlier or later model G's and EG's?
Hmm.. model K check from anybody? Early 99A's?

Just don't take that 303 near Colorado... someone there is hurting real bad for a T in 303. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Seen a few go by this spring on the auction sites, usually unidentified or misidentified as R's. Been a while, have to start keeping a list of folks who are looking for them. Since you have 5, I think Cube will be above you on the list:-).

I know the point here is to find all the info we can and Calhoun is on to something I've never seen discussed before but do y'all already have every mark on your rifles noted down on paper or are ya tearing the rifles down tha often.

Murray noted some of these markings in his book, T and the K. Some we have talked about in the past...EG (pre-war) and T's. I didn't have any notes on the R/RS (two of mine I'd never had the forearm off of). But not all models are marked as to what they are. I think the B & D are maked B. This is good info. Keep looking.
The question I have is when did it start and stop? I'm thinking after the 1927 changes...maybe early 30's and stopped during WWII?
Always more questions than answers. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Agree with you totally Rick. My EG is mid-1945 as per letter, so that takes care of the war years (well, as much as anything does). So we need later EGs to check on.
Charlie, yeah, forearms have to come off for this. Not a big deal for me and my shooters, but I definitely hope nobody takes a safe queen and mucks up the forearm screw just for this purpose. Ain't rocket science to remove a forearm without hurting it, but I hope anybody who does is careful. How often do I take the forearms off? Don't unless there's a purpose. My EG I've had for a year, probably been off 2 times. Once for cleaning/oiling the barrel and checking serial numbers, once for this check. My G I was taking apart to get the front Stith mount removed when I checked for the stamp -- I feel better keeping the wood and receiver away from a gunsmith that I'm unacquainted with.
Gonna try to sneak into Jed's safe while I'm at the fest and check his F's.... NOT!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Calhoun, checked my two G's. They're not marked. My H is marked with a Z. Also found a Z on a takedown A. The A and H were probably born a few months apart (1915 & 1916). Both have the Z and the same inspector's stamp, (a H in a circle). Now I'll have to check my T and R for stamps.

Thanks ldorado.. I was figuring the early ones wouldn't fit the mould. The T and R should be interesting. Guessing we'll see a T and an 8.

Guess that's what we get for guessing. Neither the T nor the R has any stamp on the receiver face. None of mine that are supposed (possibly) to be stamped are stamped. Guess the stamp guy was in the outhouse when mine came through.

Nothing on the T or R? Well, the T might help us set a range. What years/serial number ranges are those?
