For no particular reason other than I just like to see pics of various double action revolvers.
I'll start it out with one of mine.

There is nothing to picking up a porcupine even when they are alive...
Those are fun.
Bristoe, is yours a 17 or 14? Mine is a 14 and a pure pleasure.
I was wondering if yours was a 14. I couldn't tell from the size of the bullet holes (hole?) in the pic.
Mine is a 17.
Bud's got a "like new" Model 14 in the case right now. The price will make you choke.
He had a 5" nickel Model 10 that he wanted close to $500 for. I went home to think about it for a few days then went back to get it. It had been sold and that pretty Model 14 had taken its place. But he want's almost 800 for *that*.
The days of buying pretty old Smith's for a couple hundred dollars are over, I'm afraid.
Ha, I bought that smith, just to shoot the LEOSA qualification. It is 20 rounds at 7 yards.
That group is 24 rounds at 7, just piddling around to see how it would shoot.
I'm pretty sure it would be possible to squirrel hunt with that pistol.
My buddy had a 4 inch pencil barrel model 10 with no box but it looked to only have been test fired. He had 475 on it and it sold in 2 days.
You are right. The days of buying to old Smith's for reasonable are behind us.

colt 1909 45 wish i didn't sell but father of buyer used to carry same gun in military
And for Bristoe 41 colt
There's some guys on the Colt forum who'll fight over a .41 Army Special.
I need to pick up a Colt again I guess.
A pair of 10-5's
Found this old 6" H&R .22 down at Bud's in new condition and couldn't pass it up. Most of these things get rode hard and put up wet, but somehow this one has survived like this since 1968.
I need to pick up a Colt again I guess.
A pair of 10-5's
A man could be thought wealthy, who had a 2 inch model 10 and a 5 incher to go with it.
Nice pair of Smith's there, Scott.
One would thought wrongly, unfortunately........

yeah, those are pretty. K frames can get to be a nasty addiction. If they keep turning up down at Bud's I'm gonna have to get a damn job again.
Truth be told, the 5" one is my favorite centerfire revolver. I'd like a Model 15 again.
I've owned two model 15's with 2 inch barrels. One nickel and one blue. They both shot absolutely lights out. One of these days I will own another and it will be home to stay.
They are highly accurate little bastids.
Your 29 is a treasure, as well.

Speed Six 38 Special. I've tried, you can't blow it up...
I love an old blued steel Speed Six. My first handgun back in 1980 was a stainless Speed Six. It's currently my mom's house gun. Just shot it with my nephew the other day. Still a sweet shooter.
Nice. I had one of those once that I traded off for a mint 4 5/8" Old Model 41 Mag Blackhawk. I still have the Ruger.
A few 5" N-Frames.
A M29-2.
Another M29-2.
A M25-5 (of sorts as it started life as an early M29-2)
You probably traded in the right direction.
Bristoe;
Good evening to you sir, I trust this last evening of 2015 finds you and yours doing well.
Thanks for the thread, I too am an aficionado of double action revolvers and very much enjoy seeing what other members here have.
Here's a small offering from my safe - the first no longer in there anymore. It's a very much reworked Enfield Tanker - I modified it to shoot single action as well, blued it and made up some walnut grips instead of the compressed paper ones it came with. If memory serves the two I bought back when ran all of $35 each.
This is yet another Security Six and I must say it's nice to see I'm not the only one who appreciates these tough revolvers. Like most arms that stay here for long, this one was worked over a fair bit too, some cosmetic and some smoothing it a tad.
Lastly, the most recent addition to the revolver collection, a very clean, all original H&R .32 S&W
Thanks again for the thread Bristoe and of course thanks to all who've shared to make for some fine viewing.
All the best to you all in 2016.

My old 5" M&P. It's a "S" prefix. They dropped the "SV" on the Victory models after the war and went to the "S". Not too many of them with the "S". It doesn't make it any more valuable but I like having one from that run. From 1947.

All of mine get used but they only kill paper. I have yet to attempt shooting a running cottontail in a cutover but I can assure you there would be plenty of shooting. Don't know about killing though.
I've posted this pic a time or two, but I'll put it up again just to keep the thread active.
It's a police trade in that I got at Bud's for about 250. Obviously, it's a round butt, which isn't rare, but not all that common. I already had the Ahrends grips that I bought to put on another Model 10, but they looked to be too much on a round butt pencil barrel so I took them back off.
I think they look right in place on a 4" heavy barrel, however. This old cop revolver is a shooter, too. I've been twistin' its ear pretty good with 160 grain LBT WFN's and it does a good job with them.
I'm gonna order a double handful of their 180 grain gas check examples and see what it'll do.
I've been pushin' the 160 grainers so hard that they're starting to print low.
I think the 180's will hit to point of aim at the same velocity.
I ain't blowed one up yet. I don't think I will with 2400.
It's fun to hot rod Model 10's.

wow. that snubbie is so freaking cool.
The first stainless steel revolver I ever saw was a Ruger Security Six. It was priced at $176 bucks. It sat beside a Colt 1911. Looking at the Colt, I thought "this this silver looking thing will never sale." Wrong!
My father purchased the Security Six in 1974-75? I have it know.
When I was 15, I saved up the money and my father bought me a Model 19 with 6" barrel. It was a beautiful firearm, more so than I could appreciate. Went through a divorce...and had to sell it...fast and cheap.
That pretty much ended my revolver buying for the next 15 years.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have a lot more 70's era Smiths. I don't think that anything currently in production matches the class built into the design and production of those revolvers.
I envy you guys. Firearms like you guys post are almost never seen in my small town. When you see them, they are in poor shape, and overpriced.
Thanks for sharing.

Does the same company insure that that does the Hope Diamond?
S&W M58s are cool. Like heavy barrel Model 10s on steroids.

That gun had character. Nice.
Bummer someone ported it.
…..an early Triple Lock
…unfortunately someone fiddled with the front sight and had a thin blade inserted for a rear sight---it's well done, but ruined the collectors value of the gun….other than that, it's in great shape and still has case colors on the hammer!
Does the same company insure that that does the Hope Diamond?
Haha, I've had this one a long time. Not sure I would be willing to cough up the coin they are bringing these days.
EdM, not sure which gun you were talking about the porting on but mine definitely is not. That would be sacrilege IMHO. (Nevermind, I saw the 58 you were referring to.)
I have always loved the looks of the 58's and as I recall Mr. Keith thought the .41 Mag to be about the perfect service revolver cartridge.
Top is a Colt Officers Model Match and the bottom a Colt Cobra. Both guns came to me in May when my father passed away. Dad was a LA County Marshal who retired in 87. The cobra was his off duty and in the early days of his career he carried the 6" until the department began issuing side arms. Dad was gifted the Model Match from my uncle, a former California Highway Patrol officer who was injured in a on duty motorcycle accident, when he graduated the academy.
Funny story. Dad was a very good shot. One day after coming back to the court house from his annual qualifying and after calling court into session, he brought in a particularly violent defendant. There was extra security in the court room because of this man. The judge in open court stopped session and asked dad how his qualifying had gone. Dad a very modest man said it went fine. Judge asked him if he had his qualifying target and to bring it up to the bench. Upon review, the judge held it up to the defendant commenting, "I suggest that you don't cause any trouble in my courtroom". The target scored 118 our of a possible 120. If I recall, 12 shots in 15 seconds with a reload.
FZY, cool story and nice guns..

I can't do it any more, but back when I was heavily involved playing the IHMSA game I could regularly go 10 for 10 on the Javelina at 100 meters with a warmly loaded 5" model 10.
A few of us always hung out at the range and practiced every Saturday and got to be good friends.
It was always good for a laugh but nobody acted particularly impressed by it. They were pretty heavily involved in the IHMSA game also.
Long range handgun shooting was the norm for us Silhouette range rats back then.

Long range handgun shooting was the norm for us Silhouette range rats back then.
Back in the early 1980s there was a range officer, an older fellow ... retired deputy, who would often show off his skills by hitting a clay pigeon against the sand backstop at a little over a hundred yards using his Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special, which was a fixed sighted, three inch barreled, revolver of medium quality. He typically only required one attempt to break it.
It was his exploits with the Bulldog .44 that motivated me to buy one back in those days. Wish I never sold it. It was my carry gun for a few years in the early 1980s.

Hitting the Javelina at 100 meters with the Model 10 wasn't really that difficult. The trajectory of that load put it pretty much dead on at 100 meters for elevation. But the bullet would drift about 12" to the right over a 100 meter span.
I'd just hold a fine sight on edge of the little pigs butt and the bullet would impact a few inches over its front leg. From the Creedmore position it got to be like shelling peas after a while.
It's just a matter of figuring out how far above to hold the front sight over the top edge of the rear, then putting the top of the front sight on the target (accounting, of course, for whatever "Kentucky windage" you may require). After that, it's mostly a matter of the shooter's ability.
Yeah,..but if I had to gauge holdover it would have been more difficult. There was no holdover at 100 meters with the load I was shooting. (190 grain cast and too much Blue Dot) Just hold a flush sight on the edge of the pigs butt and the elevation was where it needed to be at 100 meters.
Since we're in a love-fest of fixed sighted guns, which IMHO are useless beyond 25 yards,
That's funny

I figure it is better to let them go on about their way, and I go about mine.

Smith 25-5...
Absolutely Bad Ass. Anyone shooting a 44 magnum over this machine is still in the dark ages...
Some Smith .22's:
One of my favorites for here in the Dark Age:::
Smith and Wesson Model 57, 4" Nickel, .41 Magnum
A blued 6 or 6 1/2" model 29 is just iconic, along with the Royal blued, 6" Python. If you just want to own an example of either model gun, with no specific use in mind...just an example of a couple of the best pistols ever made, these are the models to own.
Absolutely Bad Ass. Anyone shooting a 44 magnum over this machine is still in the dark ages...
....maybe you could talk Iceman into a Taurus Raging Bull in .41...
41's are silly.
Speaking of DA revolver's...
These two were taken @ 40+ today. Double action. God bless the K-frame.
If anybody has some "magnas" that would fit this square butt please let me know and I'll buy 'em. I hate these big ass grips that are on it currently.

Who milled those slots in the top of the barrel?

Kind of like this but head shots only...

The nicest double action revolvers I have had the honor of handling.
These 2 Colts came through Denver a while back and the manager of the pawnshop let me fondle them for an hour or so. Sure hope it was as good for them as it was for me...

New production model 17, it's a shooting sumbish.
629 my folks gave me when I graduated HS. This one is going in my casket with me. Along with a Marlin so chambered. Dunno what ammo supply is like in the happy hunting grounds, might be nice to have a rifle and handgun co-chambered.
In spite of my mad love for my 629, this no dash 586 gets carried the most.
Nice stuff here.. Gruff, the grips on the 17 are great, custom??
b, that is quite a awesome experience hold McGivern's Colt's.. Great photo.. Thanks..
Thanks, those are Herrett's. Had them on the 586 for awhile but they just don't work for out of the holster work. On the 17 though they're the cat's azz.
I liked that 3" 60 you posted up earlier. I have a -10 I bought my wife for her 21st bday. Since then I've swapped the springs, stoned it, and added a trijicon up front. Wish I had a couple more, that thing is friggin awesome.
Ever since I was a kid and shot my uncle's 17 I'd wanted one. I could hit the caps on milk jugs with surprising regularity. I was no great shot then, nor am I now, but man I've a warm and fuzzy for those 6" .22 Smith's. Waited a long time, and finally decades later a local gun store had a new one in the case. Was a lot of dough for a damn .22, but hell I just bought the damn thing.
When you get settled in the new spot, maybe we can do some shooting..?? Have a good one..
You're always welcome in my home, whether I'm settled or not.

JGray,
Are you lovin' that LCR'x?
That thing has to be the best .38 ever made. What load are you shooting in it?
Travis
I've only had it out a couple of times - first time out was with cast 158 SWC (store bought) with a variety of powders and the barrel leaded like a mofo (bullets probably too hard). Shot very low and couldn't raise the rear sight enough to zero it.
Next time out was with my own cast 170 Keiths and it went better, but still too low. Need to try some other bullet weights before screwing with the front sight. Unique seems to be the best powder so far - I think Steelhead is shooting Unique with 158 cast in his with good results.
I do like it muchly - the whole concept is just Uber and I've seen enough so far I know it'll shoot - just need to get it dialed in...

There is something UBER about them, and they look like they were made to be worn on a stainless magnum, while wearing aviators.

Mackay,
Is that bear sign east of Cooke City?
Dave
Yep,
I rode my scooter last summer to Cody. Then took the Chief Joseph scenic byway back through Cooke City, into the park and back to central Idaho.
While very smokey due to various fires, it was one of the most scenic blacktop rides I have done, and would encourage anyone to take the route at least once.
Plus the twistys on Dead Indian Hill were quite fun.
Make sure you have your earplugs in!
That my friend is RJM, and we both had plugs. It gets flat noisy on the porch. There is a large gong about 110 ish yards from the porch that we were ringing.
Plus bob was making hits on a 3'x3' target board, at 780 yards with his FA .41, with extra tall front sight.
A GREAT way to goof off in the summer time.

...it was that way when I found it. Would love to know who the smith was who worked on that gun before I bought it... There is a white dot in the Patridge front blade and two white dots on the rear blade...have never seen a sight like that before for a J-frame...
That ride on the Chief Joseph was THE best run I have ever done on a motorcycle... I did it in 2014 in between visits at Mackay's and Iceman's and wrote Mackay about it when I got home.. Almost hit a buffalo on a curve in Yellowstone on the way back to the campground...I think he did the same.
Mackay...glad to see those bags I found mounted up so well on the KLR...that was the best bargain I have ever seen.
Bob
You can't post that and not give us a hunting story to accompany it!

What the hell is that critter anyway? I don't think we have anything quite like that back east.

I had always used Federal bulk as it was cheap. It would keep all the rounds in the 2.5" white circle at 10 yards. One day had a box of Winchester 40 grain PowerPoints with me and tried them...the difference is evident...

You can't post that and not give us a hunting story to accompany it!
Not really much of a story. I was doing an evening hunt, cruising very slowly through the timber. I put a 310-320 (cant recall) hard cast slug behind his shoulder, at around 110-120 ish yards. He did about a circle and a half, and tipped over.
Not a huge bull, but when you are by yourself they get heavier with each step back to the truck.
The one really interesting thing on this hunt (to me) was that I quartered him up by headlamp and was taking quarters out. I kept getting a feeling like I was being watched.
I had hung the last pieces up in a game bag, in a tree. I came back to find the bag shredded, and a front quarter gone. Big cat tracks. I grabbed the horns and said "screw it, he can have it."
As much as I love a .44 revolver, I was really wishing I had my Glock .45 with night sights and a weapons mounted light.
Walking under the trees, I kept switching from looking at the ground, to looking up in the trees.

Yep,
Those bags were a smoking deal. I got some happy trails pannier frames to support the bags and they are G2G.
Bob's description of his ride through Wyoming was enough to convince me. Plus I had never been to the Cody firearms museum. Great ride, awesome museum.
And yes, I damn near got mucked out due to dumbass tourists stopping on high speed blind curves to look at a big buff on the side of the road. Did a pretty decent "OH SCHITT" power slide to a stop, stopping between a mini van of mouth breathers and a less than amused bull.
GOOD TIMES!!

Nice retro reproductions. Wouldn't mind having a set either.
That's a very large porcupine the size of a baby bear cub that scared the beeejeezus out of me in the dark and lonely night one evening...
Yep TRH, reproduction I frame grips that I got a while back
They don't fit perfectly but good enough to play with.
I don't remember who I got them from at all - some dude on the web.
I was wondering about those grips because I bought a pristine pair of original hard rubber, round butt K frame grips a few years ago. They're absolutely like new. I don't know their exact date of manufacture, but I'd guess it's somewhere around 1925, 1930, or so.
I planned on putting them on my 1961 round butt model 10, but the dowel hole is different.
Evidently, S&W changed the position of the dowel hole somewhere along the line on their round butt K frames. (the dowel that passes through the bottom of the grip frame and holds the grips in alignment)
Hurt my feelings just a little bit. I dropped a hundred dollars for those grip panels.
I'm sure I can get my money back out of them, but I really wanted them to work.
Here they are.
A few back there was a guy making repro grips like that which were geared to Cowboy Action Shooting.
Here they are.

DesertOkie, you sure have a pile of dang nice S&Ws. Does one of your 3" N frames happen to be a polished 625? I had one and stupidly sold it, never seen another of the polished ones.

Very classy, B. I dig the 5" barrels.
Bad cellphone pic of the last one that followed me home. Ruger GP100 with a 5 inch barrel and Hogue Alaskan grips.
Some beauties on here!
Here is mine. It's a 1937 Colt Official Police 38 that was my grandfathers. I'm currently searching for a period correct holster for it. It shoots quite accurately, likely due to the longer barrel.

Bad cellphone pic of the last one that followed me home. Ruger GP100 with a 5 inch barrel and Hogue Alaskan grips.
Ruger did well by offering the GP100 with a 5" barrel.
That's a very viable firearm in that configuration.
Smith & Wessons catch my eye because of the quality workmanship in them. Rugers are what I think of when I want a revolver that's hard to hurt.
Of course, the K-Frame Smith's are built stronger than they need to be, but when I'm working up a "warm" .38 load, I put it through my Service Six first to see how it feels.
Here's a few of mine. I have mostly stayed in the S&W vein of collecting.

Thanks folks, there are some beautiful revolvers shown in this thread.
I was kind of embarrassed to show my meager collection here. But hell, there ain't nothin going on around here tonight anyway. Just crap on TV.
I went for several years with a lonely SBH in 41 mag and thought life was good. Then I met RJM, and he persuaded me of the wisdom in owning a DA. Preferably with initials S & W.
So I eventually found this 657-3 in a local gun shop.
But I dearly wanted a 4 inch barrel. Then a few months later, Bob let me know of this Taurus for sale just a few miles from my house, from another fine 'Fire member.
And eventually Bob took pity on me and allowed me to buy, from him, this fine 657-4 MG. I added the rosewood grips by Altamont.
I take sole responsibility for this little SP-101 in 327. I drooled over the SP-101 from the introduction of the first 327. But I just could not see handicapping such a fine little cartridge with a three inch barrel. As soon as I heard of the four inch SP-101, I called my LGS and ordered one.
...your collection may be small...but when you have the best what more do you need...

What barrel length is your 16-4? Mine is 6" and shoots so good I can't make myself put a 4"er on it even though I prefer 4" Ks.

It's well under $1k, and well better than 95%.
The average price on GunBroker for a -3 is about $1300....think of it as an investment.
This one is $699, on the price tag. I have some other expenses coming up so I'll not be snagging it.

Considering the prices I've been seeing for the past year or so, $700 isn't unreasonable for one in 95% condition.
It seems as if the buying public has finally figured out that the old school S&W's aren't Easter eggs. A new crop doesn't show up every year.

Good point! But I don't want to follow that train of thought very far.
Thinking that way could cause a guy to sell every thing but the MG.

I read somewhere, that NYPD used to arm meter maids with the 3 inch model 36. I've owned a couple of the skinny barrel barrel models, and they were a joy to shoot. Always thought a heavy barrel model would be an excellent shooter, too.
Both the wimmins shoot that thing with scary accuracy.
I'd like to find another to give to the kid; she just needs to make up her mind if she's going old school or something a wee bit more conventional.

A couple of Taurus 44 SPL's. I know some here will faint at the sight of a Taurus but these two are scary accurate and rock solid so far. Great triggers to boot.

I've already been looking at GB. There are a few over there.
Out shooting in the hills yesterday...S&W 624 4", S&W 34 4", S&W 625-3 4", S&W 25-9 5", S&W 629-3 6.5" with scope.
Some fine looking rifles there also..
Something old and something new.
I got this one last week and shot it today for the first time. It's a little S&W M60 .357 3" J frame. I put some vintage J frame target grips on it and now it handles 158gn .357's with ease. It's so much more comfortable with these grips and IMO it classes it up a little too.
I was a little worried about the size when I bought it. Now, I'm just glad I bought it
