If you are like most folks I know, you will do your deer hunting with several rifles this season. But what is your #1 rifle/scope/load that you will be hunting with this year?
RS
Sako 85 Finnlight 308 Winchester with a Kahles 3-9X42
Nosler Accubond factory ammo
If I had to pick just one, it would be my customized Brno 22F 7x57 with Leupold 6x compact, Speer 160 MT loaded to 2600 fps with H4350
Winchester Model 70 270 Weatherby Magnum. Loaded with 140 Grain Nosler Accubonds.
Little Sky .260 and the .338 Federal Hawkeye.
The dedicated "opening day" rifle is going to be an Amish Machine Gun in 35 Whelen.
George
Model 81 BLR in .308 loaded with 44 grains of Varget and topped with a 165 Gr. Partition.
My Wally World Mountain Rifle in. 270 Win and 130 Partitions over 55.5 Grains of IMR 4831 will see most of the action this season I'm sure. Edit to add: Its topped with a new model K6 Weaver.
TC Icon in 30-06 pushing a 150gr Accubond over 57.5 grs H4350
A Ruger #1B, Liberty model .30-06. I inherited it when Dad passed away earlier in the year. More rifle than needed for Texas deer, but he had a high regard for the rifle, and so far, I believe I see why. I think he will like me blooding it for him.
It will probably run some sort of 150 gr bullet, however fast I can run them out of a long-throated 26" barrel - which should be fairly fast
After a good buck falls, I think probably the .22-250 #1 will be next up. After that, I am not sure, maybe an AR10, or AR15. Maybe a .30-30 Contender. I have eclectic tastes...
ask me next week and I might give you a different answer. For now the CZ 550 270 Win - 150 Hornady overkiller has the nod. 55.5 h4831sc.
.223AI...
Friggin stunt shooters.....
I'll be using a 150gr .308 soft points. I still have Win white box and Fed blue box. For years my Sav 99 in .308 has been my go to rifle for deer. This year I also have a Win mod 88 and a Win mod 100 to in .308 to think about.
I'll be hunting with the prettiest rifle IN THE WORLD!!!
Travis
My main rifle for the 2011 season will be a 20" 700 in .308win with a 5-20 Trijicon. Not too exciting, I know, but I bet it will work. I imagine I will also hunt the 444, 257, 223AI, 7mmRM, and 25-284.
Model 64 Winchester in 30-30
H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 20 gauge. My other Illinois deer "rifle" is a 50th Anniversary 357 Blackhawk.
Ernie
M700 .257 Weatherby.
Sorry, BSA, no 'chucks in the pic.
Most likely a Ruger #1B in .280 with 154 gr. Hornady Interloks and topped with a 3-9x Nikon.
Ruger Hawkeye, 338RCM reduced loads down to approx. 338Fed ballistics. 210gr TTSX
Depends on if the Bob rebarrel , or the McMillan for my .270 shows up first.
tex n cal---that's gonna be a great hunt, enjoying taking his/your #1B out on the hunt.

Pre 64 M70 270 Winchester in a Compact Edge.

If you are like most folks I know, you will do your deer hunting with several rifles this season. But what is your #1 rifle/scope/load that you will be hunting with this year?
RS
Your are correct,
it is a #1A in 7mm-08 with a Leupold 6X AO.
Most likely my new-to-me Kimber 7mm-08 for the first few days and then the Ruger 77RL 257. Working on a load for the 7mm. 100 gr. TSX for the Roberts.
My go to rifle would have to be my mod70 featherweight in 6.5x55 using 140gr Hornady Inter Lock's. I've only had three in my life I'd call a go to rifle.
Ruger m77 tang safty, 22" barrel in 7x57 with 4x Redfield using 154 gr Hornady round nose bullets.
Remington m660 in 308 in a 20" barrel with 2 3/4x Redfield using Hornady 165gr Inter Locks
Now it's my mod 70 mentioned above. It has a 22" barrel.
I'll be using my Swift for open shots across corn and bean stubble..then my practically new 444 purchased from WheelchairBandit[which is a great shooter
] back in the river sloughs and heavy cover.
Thanks again Brian for a very fine rifle
Oh BTW ingwe you don't have to worry this won't be wearin a Bubba since it's a tube shooter.........but it could
Man, I hate this question! grin....
Probably will be my "built by me" 700 25-06 with my aluminum Monster Barrel. I shot 110gr Accubonds through it.
Runners up, 243AI and 7mm-08. They will all prolly get hunted equally though!
Probably my ruger 77 in 257 Roberts. I have not had a chance to christen it yet even though it may have killed a truck load in it's former life. For me it needs a story. If not that my 70fwt in 6.5x55 it's new to me too.
One that's sure to see a lot of use, starting in Wyoming, is a nice Rem Gander Mtn Guide rifle in .308 that I picked up from someone on the fire.....perhaps the OP....I was shooting it yesterday out to 500yds and it really shines. Shooting 168 TTSX's over 45.5 grains of Varget. Post on (in a Leupold 2.5-8) is only 3" low at that distance. Second in line is an AWR in .338WM with the 210 TTSX's, it gets to go west also.
Probably a rotation of 6.5x55's: CZ550FS peeped, Husquvarna 1640 Leup 3x, and this CZ550 American just feels right with enough heft to be steady:
It's 308 Deer Year this year.
Savage 99A 308 here at the ranch.
Model 70 Featherweight 308 for elsewhere.
fn model 70 super grade in 270. currently have mounted a 4x leupy, but it isn't long enough so will replace it with a leupy vx2 3-9x40 as soon as i order one. 130gr partition handloads for deer and 150gr partition handloads for elk.
Piney Woods, Rem 799/7.62x39/ 123gr. s.p. Winny/ K6 Weaver. Most shots under 50 yds. blinds out to 90 yds. or so.
Ky. The 84M/.243/ 100GR. S.P. Federals / k6 Weaver.
South Texas, 84m Classic/.308/150 gr. Fusions / VXII 3-9x40.
Winchester Fwt. 7x57, 2.5-8x36 Leupie with 140gr. Gamekings or 160gr Partitions. Treestand hunting in Minny Soda.
Probably carry my 1895G 45/70 with 405 something over 25.0grs of 2400 the most.
I will also carry my 336 .35 Rem, 700 Ti 30/06, 700 .260 Rem, Hawkeye .358 Win and my Stevens 200 .223.
None. Because I`m not going deer hunting this year.
Rifle for midwestern Whitetails - Savage M99A, 1x4 Leupold, 87 grain Speer HotCor over 35 grains H4895.
Mule deer rifle - Ruger tang safety M77 7x57, 2.5x8 Bausch & Lomb - Balvar 8B, 154 grain Hornady Interlock over 50 grains H4350.
The Poobah is happy.....
And happy is just another word for.......
Depends on where I will be hunting them. I missed all of last year so I am going all out.
Here in VA, where I live:
H&R Ultra Slug 12 Ga with a ML 2-7 Leupold (on base hunting).
1946 Transition Model 70 in 250-3000 with a Lyman Alaskan.

Last two are really nice days.

Always a struggle in choosing between my two favorites: the M70 .270 WIN & the M88 .308 WIN, but I bet the M88 will be with me on opening day.
I have to hunt with this M94 .32WS, a gift from a dear friend right before he passed a year and a half ago - I told him I would get a buck for him with it but never got a shot last season.
If I manage to blood all three of the guns above then I plan to host an old time, down east deer hunt, the way my Dad and Great Uncles used to hunt - get some deer hounds turned out in the swamp and ring the surrounding fields with stump sitters shooting buck shot - going to use my M12 16 gauge for that hunt.
.223AI...

Savage 99G w/ 180 Speer RNSP and a Redfield peep

Good Huntin' all, and be safe.

Probably start out with the new M70 Fwt. 7-08 pushing 139 Hornady. To defend myself from Ingwe's dogs I'll note that I bought the 7-08 because Winchester/Browning doesn't see fit to chamber in 7x57 these days.
After properly breaking in the Fwt, I'll probably break out the old reliables. Ruger MkII 257 Roberts or Tang Safety 250 Savage both shooting the 100 Hornady.
Sako 85 Finnlight in 270 Win with a Zeiss Duralyt in 2-8 x 42.
Federal Vital Shok 130 grain BT's should do the trick.
Gus
In Vermont it will be the DWM 1909 30-06 sporter with a 2.5-8 Leu if its not raining or snowing. Then it will be the M84M Montana 308 with a 2.5-8 Conquest.
In CT the land is more open and if its raining it might be the Kimber 7mm WSM Montana with a 3-9 Conquest.
For Montana I am taking my Sako 85 finnlight in 270 win and Sako 85 in 25-06. Both with Leupold 3.5x10x40mm CDS scopes.
Here at home I might use my old Sako 75 in 300 RUM or a Sako 75 in 270 WSM. Or I might try and kill one with my fairly new Sako A1 in 223...you guys keep saying it will work...grin.

RS
Rem Model 7 LSS, 20" Pac-Nor barrel, Zeiss 1.8-5.5x38mm in Talley LW's. 225 Partition at 2500 fps. Perfect for most of my deer hunting.
I will also likely carry my "new" 7WSM Kimber on some deer hunts up on the fringes of clearcuts.
Sako 85 .338 Federal
225 Nosler Accubonds
VXII 2-7X33 in the heavy chit
Model 700 XCR .270 WSM
VX3 4.5-14X40 CDS
130 TTSX/BT for anything far away (fat chance)
Ruger Hawkeye, 338RCM reduced loads down to approx. 338Fed ballistics. 210gr TTSX
I may use my RCM as well. It shoots 180 gr. BT's into 5/8".

Livingston area. Probably between 1st and 2nd week of Nov.
Hi new here. Nice to meet you...
I'll start out with my 270 WSM Kimber Montana with 130 gr Winchester XP3 ammo. It has a Swarvoski 3x10x42 on it.
I'll use my custom 25-06 with a blued Remington 700 action and a stainless heavy contour 26" Lilja barrel. It groups great at 200 yards with 110 gr Winchester Supreme Elite accubonds. It has a Swarovski 4x12x50 with a BRX retical. The green with black web stock is a Alaskan II with a full lenght aluminum bedding block. It's been glass bedded also.
I have a custom John Gallagher "Lightweight Special" in 7mm Rem. Mag. It has a Swarovski 3x10x42, stainless Remington 700 action, and a stainless 26" fluted Hart barrel with muzzle brake. I shoot 140 gr Federal Supreme accubonds in it.
I'm sure I'll pull a couple more out of the safe before the three month deer season ends in Alabama.
Wish you good luck with the 32, Odessa.
Either this one:
MY Springfield 30/06
Or this one:
My Ruger Model 77 MKII in 7mm/08
For Elk it's either the '06 or the Remington in 300 Weatherby.
Tikka .270, SWFA SS 3x9, 140 Berger with 59gr H4831. Load switches to the Barnes 110TTSX over 59gr of H4350 for lead free zones.
My Winchester Model 70 Classic SS in 270 WSM w/ 3-9x40 Zeiss Conquest & 140 gr Accubonds has been so reliable with one shot kills at all ranges that I feel like I'd be being unfaithful to shoot anything else. That being said I have a couple other Model 70's in 30-06 and 300 WSM that need some use as well as "my wife's" Ruger No. 1 in 25-06.
Ruger #3. It's a 6.5 Sage.

Winchester M70 Featherweight 30-06 w/Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 or VX3 1.75-6x32. Loaded with 180gr Nosler Partitions on top of 57gr of H4350 with WW cases and WLR primer.
Or, if I can get a 25-06 swung soon enough......
Wish you good luck with the 32, Odessa.
Thank you.
My new CZ 550 American kevlar stock in .270 win. Very accurate right out of the box.

Your turn.....I'm betting something in .257, but won't the Beisen or the NULA get to go? Choices, choices....
My main rifle for the 2011 season will be a 20" 700 in .308win with a 5-20 Trijicon. Not too exciting, I know, but I bet it will work. I imagine I will also hunt the 444, 257, 223AI, 7mmRM, and 25-284.
I never figured you for a 444 kind of guy.
CVA Scout, 44 mag. Has a nikon 2-7x prostaff on board. Since I hunt in Indiana, we are limited to shotguns, ML, handguns, and pistol caliber rifles.

Stevens 200, 7mm-08, bedded in a Boyd's thumbhole laminate, Nikon Team Primos 3-9x40, 120 NBT @ 3100 for the rifle, although I plan to spend most of the time out with the iron sighted Redhawk loaded with 240 XTP's @ 1475.
Remington LSS Mtn. rifle in 7mm/08, 140 Accubond over Varget.
Any two of these four will be used on every hunt by my nephew and I;
.223AI Remington LTR using 53gr TSX or 55gr TTSX w/6.5-20x50 Zeiss Conquest
.257 WBY Vanguard Sub MOA using 100gr TTSX w/4.5-14x50 Zeiss Conquest
.280 Steyr Prohunter using 120gr TTSX w/4.5-14x40 Leupold VXIII.
.300 WSM Winchester using 150gr Interbonds w/3.5-10x44 Zeiss Conquest.
Hopefully all will get plenty of action considering your allowed three does a day in Unit L in Tennessee.
I think this year I am going to take old reliable most of the time. My name sake. A Ruger M77 Mark II in 270 win. topped off with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9 40mm and loaded with a 130 gr TTSX over 60 gr. H4831sc.
Then again I might go for a dink with this. Would this be considered baiting.
Awh, Yes the ever present
BLUE TAPE everyone needs that on their gun for hunting according to some here a couple of years ago.
Nice guns but I'd use a finger cot it's more useful, it'll keep the rain from going down the barrel.
If you are like most folks I know, you will do your deer hunting with several rifles this season. But what is your #1 rifle/scope/load that you will be hunting with this year?
Kimber Montana .308 Win. It's wearing a Leupold 2.5-8X w/ B&C 'hairs in Tally ringmounts. The load uses the 165 grain Nos. accubond over 43.5 grains of RL15, WW brass, Fed 210 match primers.

Probably the Kimber 8400 .300 WSM, since I have an elk tag for the same season. Maybbe the Win 70XTR Fwt 7x57, though.
It will be my "new" Winchester M70 Stainless Featherweight .270 win. I've had it for four years but only just recently put a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on it. Will use Winchester 130gr. Power Points.
Mark-X Mannlicher in 7x57, 2-7x33 Leupold, 140 Partitions
There should be prizes for chitt like this.
I'm giving it a Thumbs Up!
It will be my "new" Winchester M70 Stainless Featherweight .270 win. I've had it for four years but only just recently put a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on it. Will use Winchester 130gr. Power Points.
That is a classy rig!
Marlin guide gun for most of my hunting, 30-06 vanguard for the greenfields with paw paw.

Whats the outlook on that 25-06?
Either this one:

Your're a lefty with right handed rifles. Welcome to the club

It will be my "new" Winchester M70 Stainless Featherweight .270 win. I've had it for four years but only just recently put a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 on it. Will use Winchester 130gr. Power Points.
Veddy nice. Why did it take so long to scope that baby? Very nice rifle.....
Ennie Meanie Minny Moe....
7mm WSM and 160-grain Accubond's for me this year. Have to wait until November for my deer hunt though!
I have to take my TC Encore 460 S&W with a 20" Katahdin barrel. I have taken the rifle out the last 2 years and haven't seen a deer each time I took the rifle out.
My main deer rifle this year?
How the hell would I know? Ask me AFTER the season ends.
Problem is I have a couple virgins. The Ruger #1 in .280 Rem is definitely going antelope hunting in 10 days and that should take care of one. Not sure what will go as my backup rifle.
For elk/deer season in November my Ruger MKII .338 WM will be my primary rifle. Too bad for any buck that wanders into range before I get my cow. After the cow, provided I haven't already filled my bug tag, my backup rifle will come out. Several choices for the backup:
Ruger MKII stainless .30-06
Rem M700 .30-06, a virgin
Marlin .30-30, also a virgin
Ruger M77 .257 Roberts, my favorite rifle
Probably won't know what is going as the backups on either hunt until the usual time - the night before I leave...
Subject to change:
Original (first or second year of production) Remington 700 KS in 7mm Rem. Mag./ Swarovski 3-9x36/ 160gr. Partition, 63.0gr. IMR-4831, Federal 215M, W-W brass.
Designated doe whacker is a Remington 700 LVSF 7mm-08 barreled action in a McMillan handle/ Swarovski 3.5-10x42/ 120gr. TSX, 44.0gr. RL-15, Federal 210M, Remington brass.

you mean not everybody ends up getting 8 to 10 of their rifles, ready for deer season each year???
with 3 to 5 loads ready for each???
Pre-64 Win Model 70 in 270.
Well, it looks like I will be toting the Marlin XS7 .308 topped with Burris FFII for most of the season. If I can get my ML fixed before ML season, I will be toting my dad's old CVA Hakens clone, and will probably drag out the 12 gauge with slugs for the deep woods, and even the Winchester 70 SS .270 WSM.
At the risk of being accused of trolling, I will respond to this thread. I don't deer hunt till 1 Jan 12, so won't know till about christmas. Likely be some flavor of 25-06, 270 or 308. Since I'm going for over two weeks, likely one of each.
Custom built 300 saum. Hart barrel, zeiss victory diavari 2.5-10x42. First time out tomorrow afternoon overlooking a bean field
Last year I bought a sweet Sako 85 Finnlight 300 WSM from shortmagfan that I use for hunt mule deer / elk with in Colorado next month.
This weekend in California I am using a 85 Finnlight 25-06 for deer and bear.
Probably a Ruger M77 RSI in .250 Savage, with NECG receiver sight.
Picked up a nice Marlin 336 and a 1x4 Leupold that I'm gonna pair up this year for chasing Hill Country whitetails. Will pull out the Rem.VSS in .308 if we get drawn for a South Texas hunt.
My tikka T3 lite staneless in 30-06 w/3x9x40 nikon shootin 55.5gr of win760 behind a 150gr partotion or my browning Abolt medallion in 280 w/4x12x40 with factory 140gr fusions depending on where im at or what im feelin at the moment. Maby use the 3030 marlin once or twice.
I decided to bring a double gun case for my deer hunt this year, so will bring the featherweight 350 rem. mag. along as well.
The pacnor barrel likes the 200-grain Hornady's. They should hammer a deer.
1st gen Ti 30-06 and 629 performance center hunter 44mag.
What load do you like in that rifle?
For the very first time I'll be chasing deer with a .50 cal Muzzle Loader (brother-in-law talked me in to it). Season opens this Saturday. Come sun up, I'll be in the same place we watched three dandy mule deer last weekend. I hope I have a happy pic for you on Monday.
Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in .35 Whelen and my #2 is a Pre war M/70 in .257 Roberts. Or is it the other way around, anyway I'll be taking both and will hunt with one or the other on a given day. May take a deer with each as we are allowed a buck and a doe in Kentucky.
Beretta Mato 30-06 in a walnut stock with a Burris 3X-10X-40mm Signature Select scope. The load will probably be a a Swift Scirocco II, I just haven't decided on the weight.
For deer I will be using the Model 70 Classic this year. Mike Rock barrel in 270 WCF, sitting in a Brown 'glass stock, Zeiss Conquest 3-9X in talleys, shooting 140 gr Hornady BTSP's....
For rifle season it will be my Sako 75 with a shilen ss tube in .260 rem, edge stock, VX II CDS, 130gr accubonds. New this year so hoping to see some action with it.
For shotgun hunt, using my Mossberg 400g with a new slug barrel, open sights and rem copper solids.
The old M700 30-06 with 165g Sierra Gamekings..Rifle is bonestock but shoots under an inch with my handloads.
I am wanting to pick up a Ruger M77 really bad though...but it isnt gona happen this year
I will be using a Savage Edge .308 with 150 grain Nosler BT and A XL7 270 with 130 grain Speer BTSP
Although some other model 70's will get some playtime, my main squeeze is usually my 1957 .270 fwt.
I'll be hunting with the prettiest rifle IN THE WORLD!!!
Travis
Oh, did you trade that butt-ugly yellow abomination for a pretty rifle?
Probably my Tikka T3 Lite stainless in .270, loaded with 130 gr Accubonds.
ol' meat and taters rem 700 6.5x55 w/ 4x12 kahles shooting a 120 ttsx
Start with a Rem model 8 in 35 Rem, then a custom 338 Fed
Although some other model 70's will get some playtime, my main squeeze is usually my 1957 .270 fwt.
Cool picture
Gonna try my old Win 70 264WM with 130 gr Accubonds this year.
My main squeeze for ungulates is:
Browning A-bolt II field grade in .30-06
Simmoms Aetec 3.8-12x44
Federal fusion 165 grain
SIMS limbsaver (a must for any big boy rifle)
My wife bought it for my anniversary present 2 years ago, and I bloodied it that Dec 23rd, so hopefully that pattern will continue
LH Ruger M77 with a Krieger 1-8# Twist, #2 Contour. 6.5x55 Swede. Nosler Accubond 140g at 2700 fps.
It is pretty interesting how similar some of the choices are;
My main deer rifle for Buck this year: SS Model 70 All Terrain [FW], in .30-06, 2.5-8x36 Leupy, it has iron sights and for a backup scope an old K-4 in rings.
Load is a 180 Nosler Partition or Core-Lokt or Hornadu PSP,
57 H4350, Remington cases, CCI primers.
For Doe I will likely use an Ithaca Deerslayer, likely the 12 gauge with a Scout scope and smooth bore barrel. Load is Winchester Foster Slugs.
I might use the rifled barrel and sabots if I get a chance to get the scope on it.
MCT3- That might be my favorite rifle I have seen so far on this sight...Very Classy
Assuming that I actually hunt deer this year with a rifle as opposed to a bow it will likely be this one. Weatherby Vanguard in .300 win mag with McMillan edge stock. 1000% overkill for whitetail but I got the action in a trade for basically nothing so I figured if you got it shoot it. My normal deer hunting rifles are a pair of Ruger tang safety models in .25-06 and .30-06.
I found a cheap birch stocked Marlin Model 30AW in .30-30 in my safe that I don't know how it got there last year. Looking at the stock I'm guessing it was someones who strapped it to a 4wheeler a lot. I might try it out just to say I did something with it.
I have a couple that will hunt this year, in calibers 6.5x55 and 7x57. My favorite is the 7x57 because it is the perfect blend of light recoil, range, and "thump." I already blooded my #1A but will take it out more. I've taken many deer with the 6.5x55 but will definitely take it out more. It doesn't do the damage that the 7x57 does, but every time the trigger breaks, an involuntary smile crosses my face. It is such a sweet-shooting caliber. Put one of those 140gr Hornadys in the right place and the deer lays flat like a sack o' taters. I got 06's too but the older I get, the less I apreciate the recoil, especially since the other rifles kick half as much and kill deer just as dead.
My FIL is really taken with his new 243 Marlin. I load 100gr Hornadys for him and he slays the deer. That thing is amazingly accurate. Guess he doesn't like recoil much either.
Tonight I loaded up some 308s for my wife and son. I can't keep a 308. Whenever I get one, somebody claims it. The wife took the M70 Classic Compact and the son glommed on the Kimber 84M Classic. They both slay bambi with 165gr Hot Cors over 46grs of Varget. The youth season opens tomorrow morning (this morning it is now, I guess). The son has been watching a couple fair bucks behind the house and is going out in the morning.
My oldest daughter stole my Weatherby '06. I suppose claiming dad's "nicest rifle" is her love language. Whatever works, I guess. At least she knows.
The eldest son killed his first buck with dad's Whelen. You know who's got that rifle now.
My youngest daughter is talking about hunting this year. She hates recoil so I'll let her use one of my Swedes. Good thing we're done having kids. I wouldn't have a rifle to hunt with. It's just terrible losing my rifles to my kids.
Not.
If you are like most folks I know, you will do your deer hunting with several rifles this season. But what is your #1 rifle/scope/load that you will be hunting with this year?
RS
A former 308 Varmint Special that now wears a Classic stock and stainless barrel.
178HPBT, 47.5grs PP2000MR, either CCIBR or WLR primers depending upon which load shoots best this morning..
Oh, It's got a 1.5-6 Sig.
Although some other model 70's will get some playtime, my main squeeze is usually my 1957 .270 fwt.
I could live with that.......looks vaguely familiar...
Just back from the gunsmith,Mannlicher 1952 in .308...
I picked up two more rifles in the off season a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem and a Weatherby Mark V SS Carbine, both are deserving. Then there is the 338-06, 243, and Marlin 30-30 but after all is said and done...a Weatherby Mark V SS Carbine in 7mm-08 will probably get the nod. It will be wearing a different scope this year a Leupy 1-4x and shootin 154 Hornady's or maybe the 140 Nos AB's..decision, decisions
Winchester model 70 Classic Featherweight 6.5x55 / Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40
I can't decide between my Kimber 257R with 120 Interlock HPs or my new Win 70 Feather in 7-08 with 145 Hot Cors. I guess I'll bring both and make my decision opening morning.
Sako A7 in 270 wsm with 130gr ttsx.
Going back to one of the .270s this year. Probably the pre-64 Model 70 Fwt.
Probably go with the Marlin 35 Rem, because I don't like sitting in a stand and I like the balance of a Marlin while still hunting. But my Savage 111 30-06 will get a little time, because its the most accurate rifle I own shooting 180 gr interlocks.
Going back to one of the .270s this year. Probably the pre-64 Model 70 Fwt.
Hooorahh!
I was hoping to use this, but we may run out of time,,,,
I was hoping to use this, but we may run out of time,,,,
Well put it together and site it in !!

gonna use the encore .50 muzzleloader.
A new to me CZ 550 American 6.5x55 wearing a Leupy VXII 3x9x40, 3 point or better. The backup rifle is a Sako 85 Finnlite 300WM with a Redfield Revo 4x12x40.
Well on second thought, after I saw some pics of the 3 760s I thought that I might use my 760 this year...I never use it because I dont reload 308s and hate buying factory but I may bite the bullet and buy a box of two for this year.
She wears a an older Japanese fixed 4x bushnell banner withh see through rings.
TC Contender in 7-30 Waters.
Rifle for midwestern Whitetails - Savage M99A, 1x4 Leupold, 87 grain Speer HotCor over 35 grains H4895.
Mule deer rifle - Ruger tang safety M77 7x57, 2.5x8 Bausch & Lomb - Balvar 8B, 154 grain Hornady Interlock over 50 grains H4350.
250-3000? I just bought one can't wait to take it out.
I'll be hunting with the prettiest rifle IN THE WORLD!!!
Travis
Well, at least you'll never lose it in the woods.
I have to hunt with this M94 .32WS, a gift from a dear friend right before he passed a year and a half ago - I told him I would get a buck for him with it but never got a shot last season.
I love an old 94.
Although some other model 70's will get some playtime, my main squeeze is usually my 1957 .270 fwt.
Nice Featherweight. Great shot.
Ruger Hawkeye .223 with a 3-9 vxII. buncha BL-C 2 and 55gr TTSX or 60gr Vmax depending on circumstances.
Kimber MT, 338 Fed. Probably 185 TTSXs.
Winchester Model 70, 300 WSM. McMillan compact pattern stock and a Leupold M8 3x.
I would like to take this 1886 in 45-90 on a few walks in the woods this deer season. It's an 1891 gun with a half-round barrel and some nice wood. I loaded some 300 gr. casts and it functions fine, it would be nice if a buck would now just give me a shot.....But this would not be my main rifle this year, that would be a Kimber Montana in .257 for the Adirondacks and a Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57 for the southern zone hunts. Good luck all.
My DIY special. Savage/Stevens action, match trigger, Pac-Nor barrel, B&C stock with other target goodies. I refinished the metal in Cerakote, camo'd the stock. Caliber .260 Rem. A Nikon 3-9x40 with some sort of BDC reticle I had handy. I just put it all together a few weeks ago and have been working on some handloads for it. I think I'll settle on Nosler 130gr Accubonds, over a yet to be determined load of RL 19. I've been hunting with a couple different .308s over the past several seasons, with an occasional outing with my old model 94 30-30, but I think this new build will be my go-to gun for a while, at least until I finish tinkering with one of my .308s. I don't think the quest for the perfect rifle will end; I'd suddenly be bored if it did.
Wow. I'd be honored to hunt with that rifle. Sorry, to hear about your friend passing away. A nice deer killed with that rifle would be a special event.
My Hawkeye in 30-06 using 59 grains of H414 to push a 150 grain TTSX around 3000 fps.
With my Pronghorn sling on it, that thing is deadly.
Rock River LAR-8
Sightron 6.5-20
Sierra 165 Hollowpoint Boattail
Forgot just how much powder but use IMR-4895
2600 fps
Keeps me healthy dragging it around
Probably same as last year, 303 Savage 99:
I tend to carry different rifles on different days....depending on where and how I will be hunting. While there are some 40 rifles that "could" get some woods time this season, the one's I actually shot this week to confirm zero are likely to get the most use.
The Savage 99's will certainly go hunting including an EG in .250-3000, another EG in .358 and an F in .308. The Ruger Mannlicher ("Brenda") is a favorite that will be get a few trips. For those "slipping" hunts in the really thick stuff, the Ruger 44 Carbine and a Marlin 1895 in .45-70 are ready to go.
Of course if things don't go well early, my "old faithful" main rifle will come out to play. It's an FN Mauser custom in .30-06 that has over 80 kills to it's credit. It too, is one of the few "named" rifles I have....Diana!
LH Rem 700 6.5x47L. 2.5-10x32 Nighforce NXS ( picture has the 5.5x22NXS), 21" Lilja 8 twist, 129 Hornady SST's over 37 g R-15.
Most of my hunting will be done with a Model 7 SS 358 Win and the load will be 200gr Hornady SP. May also use several other 358's that I have. I'm sure the 700 Classic 250 Savage will find its way into the field at some point also with factory 100gr SilverTips.
Ken
Here's mine: LH Ruger Hawkeye 30win
McMillan stock with Burris low rings
Leupold FX II 6x42
Dads old 670 winny with fw contour barrel chambered in 280AI. Edge stock and prolly run 139gr gmx's since they had blems on sale. May swap scope for somethin with a turret or dots?
Browning X-Bolt Stainless Hunter in .300 WM, 130TTSX cruising around 3530fps......
Well, I ended up using my FN PBR XP 300WSM since I knew I'd be shooting long range at my buck. I'm very glad that is the rifle I took this year:
This target was shot a few days before I took my buck. The day before the hunt I set it so it was zeroed for 240. 32 clicks up (8 moa) got me the rest of the way for the one shot kill (total clicks up= 42):
10 shot group in windy conditions......
My Left Hand 700 in 6.5-06 , Rel 22 and the Nosler 120 gr BT
Great thread. Thanks to all who posted pictures. (Except that Gawd Awful Yellow thing a few pages back! hahahha)
In NY, I will be carrying my Savage 110 in 30-06. First year we can use rifles in my area...used it before in the Dacks and in the neighboring county...bled 1 deer with it.
Hoping for another this year!
Knight Disc SS 'Elite' M-L, shooting Blackhorn 209 & a 250 grn SST. If it wasn't IL I'd use my 284win.
This:
.260rem Pac-Nor BBL, Stevens action, SSS trigger, modified and painted B&C stock, Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 and a few other goodies. It's the "perfect" deer rifle in my opinion. It is unbelievably accurate, and an easy kicker...just perfect. My definition of perfect will probably change by next season, but for now this is it. Building another with a 20" BBL in .308 with a laminate stock and removable mag in stainless on a Savage action as I write. I'm still searching for the "perfect" all-round scope, though. Thinking a Bushnell Tactical 6500. I can't wait to see what the .260 rem, 130 Accubonds do on deer though, but suspect they'll perform superbly. Might have to order another barrel for the current project.
Winchester WINLITE 270, push feed, ceracoated, that I bought from Fosteology last year or the year before?
Great rifle for deer, elk, what have you.
I have back ups in other calibers (lots of 308s), but this rifle is growing on me.
I love my 30-30 carbines!
Sherwood
Sheesh this is a tougher question than it oughta be. I've got my new .257 Bee tweaked, just got back from playing with my .257 AI & 30-06 which are all dialed in, working on something for my AR, and have my 6-250 shootin' 90 gr NBTs into one tiny hole.
So many rifles, so little time.
Is this how a polygamist feels?
IKE...my 243AI I built with my own hands, and a professonals eyes...
25-06 my favorite caliber
Just finished packing my gear into the truck for tomorrow morning's rifle opener - the M94 .32 WIN SPL won the coin toss - going to sit in the woods over acorns all morning and see what develops.
Great thread. Thanks to all who posted pictures. (Except that Gawd Awful Yellow thing a few pages back! hahahha)
Hey [bleep]! That's like the third zing!
Travis
Winchester Model 70, 300 WSM. McMillan compact pattern stock and a Leupold M8 3x.
That's a cool rig!
Travis
The bean fields will see Savage 270 Win with Hornady sst bullets over 55.0 IMR4350. For closer woods hunting I prefer Remington model 7 in 243 Win with hornady 100 sp and IMR4350 powder.
My deer rifle this year...
.300 Wby Mag
150 Gr Barnes TSX @ 3300 fps.
Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 W/ BDC Tried and proven accurate out to 500 yds.
This year it is a pre 64 model 70 in 280 (fwt barrel profile), in an compact edge, talley LWs and a 3.5x10x40 varix lll pushing 139 hornadys.
Last year (!) it was a sako alll in 270 win in a bansner stock with the same leupold on it, running 130bts.
Model 7 CDL 350 Mag., Taconic Ti. Mauser 308, 700 CDL 35 Whelen; in that order.
Same as every year.....A Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight in 280 Remington, topped with a Leupold Vari-x3 2.5x8. As close to perfect as I've found.
For the early season, a CVA Wolf 50 Caliber muzzleloader. It's cheap and ugly, but it works!
I have to end my 30-06 curse this year, every time I take a 30-06 I either see no deer, or they see me 1st and run on me. I am usually pretty good on running shots, but all 3 times I have fired a 30-06 at running deer resulted in a perfect tree trunk shot. The gun is a push feed Win 70 Winlite with a 3-9 Nikon Monarch that was my Dads hunting and fishing buddy's before he died. I am starting to wonder if I pissed him off when I was a kid, and he cursed his rifle for me.
If/when the 06 gets bloody, I have to show some love to my Kimber 270 WSM and 308 Montana. Then the Savage 99 DLX in 308 and the Ruger Hawkeye 358.
Weatherby Ultralight 25-06 with Leopold 3.5-10x50. Shooting 100g Hornady Interbond handloads. If I hunt the wide open spaces with probable long range shots, it will be a Rem 700 Sendero 25-06 with 6-24x50 Bushnell 4200 Elite Tactical and mildot reticle; same bullets. The first is easy to carry, the second shoots very accurately way out there. Both ensure that I don't have to track wounded deer.
This year it is the 16" barrel stainless Marlin 336 carbine with a 1.5-4x scope on top......
.......Or the .270 with a fixed 4x.......
.......Or the Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 mag......
We'll see after my last few range sessions before the season starts.
Ruger M77 in .275 Rigby for the most part same as last year. Also, my Weatherby Back Country .30-06.
Last 5 out of 6 deer,
Sako A7 300WSM, 180 Partition, 6x42 LR.
Great deer rifle.
Mine is custom lwt 8 twist 243ai, with 105 Scenars. Pac Nor barrel, McM Edge Mr stock. 6x42 with Target Turrets.
That is way beyond my level of loony!
But someday I would like to get a custom barrel and stock.
Thinking real hard about a 25-06 or 270 in a Kimber 84L, that would be sweet.
280AI kimber MT would be sweet!!!
as for deer rifles... i'm going to hunt with these all at least once this year... some i already have...
243 rem 700 ADL in a classic stock 6x42 M1's

But someday I would like to get a custom barrel and stock.
Thinking real hard about a 25-06 or 270 in a Kimber 84L, that would be sweet.
Save your money.. you're doing just fine. (grin)
Yeah, no kidding!
My .358 M7 is perfecto for how/where/what I hunt. It'll almost certainly do the deed again this year.
Mine will be my new tang safety M77 .308win. Picked her up this summer nib from 1982 and found an 80s vintage bushnell 4x to go on top.
Win 94AE Big Bore in .356. Not the first choice for most mulie hunters in WY, but I love this gun!
Model 7 stainless/synthetic in 300 SAUM
Model 700 XCR II in 300 RUM
Model 7 predator in 243 Win.
Model 700 XCR II in 338 Win mag
In no particular order
Kimber 8400 Classic 300 Win Mag, Swaro 4x12x50 w/#4 Ret, 180 AB's...primary
Sako 85 Stnlss 300 WSM, Zeiss 3x10x50, 180 Barnes TTSX...on deck
Remington 700 LSS 7 RUM, 3.5x10x50 VXIII, 150 TSX...on deck
Ruger #1 BBZ 7 Rem Mag, 3x10x40 VX III w/offset rings, 140 TTSX..on deck
Son just came over & picked up my most accurate as his primary..Sako 75 Finnlight 270 WSM, 3x9x40 Zeiss, 140 AB's
Rifle deer begins in 13 days...good hunting to all.
Marlin 336 in .35 Remington w/1.5-5 Leupold
Savage 99A Saddle Gun in .308 w/1.5-5 Leupold
Remington 141 in .35 Remington w/1.5-5 Leupold
Marlin 1895G in .45-70 w/1-4 Leupold
And when I leave the Big Woods for the farm country where longer shots are possible:
Winchester M-70 Featherweight classic in .30-06 w/2.5-8 Leupold
Remington M-600 in .308 w/ 2-7 Nikon Monarch
Remington M-600 Mohawk in .243 w/ 2-7 Redfield Revolution
Ruger M-77 in .358Win. w/2-7 Leupold
Remington M-7 in .300RSAUM w/2-7 Leupold
Trying to pick one favorite is impossible for me, they will all see duty this year, although the Marlin 336 in .35 will see the most use in the woods, and the Winchester Featherweight in .30-06 will be with me if I think there may be a chance at a real long shot(it's so accurate with the first two shots out of a cold barrel it's scary).
I will only get to make one trip this year where I will be hunting a buck myself. I will be shooting my Ruger M77 SS in 338Fed that I fitted to a Ruger Ultra light stock, topped w/ a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16x40 w/ DOA reticle, shooting 160TTSX over 51gr of AA2230 at ~3030fps:
The rest of the time I will be with my son at our lease. He is 16 and never taken a really nice buck. He has been hunting with me off & on since he was 7, now he's 16. It's only been in the last 2 years that he's gotten serious. We hunted hard all last year, but he never saw a deer he liked. While I certainly expect to have a chance to see a nice deer, I can't bring myself to shoot any bucks until he gets his (feels like I would be shooting his deer...).
When I go out on these trips I'm packing my Benelli R1 carbine in 30-06 topped w/ a Trijicon 2.5-10x56. I restrict myself to thinning our severly over abundant feral hog & coyote populations:
David
I'll shoot three, but the little .243 w/85gr TSX's will probably see the most action.
