You could have the standard bases opened up to #8 from the standard #6 by a gunsmith or machinist. Hole spacing is the same. I wouldn't consider that a dead end, just a little more work.
Does your rifle actually have the 8-40 holes, or is that just what the manual states? Didn't know the TSRs had 8-40, learn something new every day.
