I prefer low power, wide field of view type scopes for the 45-70.

Along the lines of the 1-4X20 VX-2, 1.5-5 VX-3i, or FX-2.5X20 UL. I've used these with complete satisfaction on my Guide gun. Observations (I won't call them complaints) are that the 1-4 or 1.5-5 may have a little less eye relief than the 2.5X20, but the 2.5X eyebox is more critical. But, it has enough eye relief for a shoulder-fired 20MM......

6 of 1, half a dozen of another, and I find myself getting away from the real heavy recoiling loads, so I'm leaning more towards FOV.

Bobnob17, that is an underappreciated scope you have, and the 2-7 power offers a lot for hunting close cover. I use a 2-7X33 VX-2 CDL on a handly little .308 and find it very versatile, more so than the 1-4s.
