I'm surprised that Don/Savage99 hasn't jumped in to tell you how bad Remington 722s are.
Regarding a period scope, I've always thought that a Lyman All-American 8x40 AO mounted via Leupold Detacho-Mount rings/bases looked good and worked well on 722 varmint rifles.
