I like a 4-12 or so with a small front bell. I agree that'S is. Must especially side focus.
A good forgiving eyebox and a simple pled reticle with 2 0r 3 hash marks is handy. Good clear glass is a must. Finger adj and re-settable knobs are a real plus.
For hunting a good straight 6 is very nice.

But if I were to spec a top notch all around scope it would be a 4.5-14 or 4-16 with a front bell between 36 and 42.
All the handy options I listed above, and really good glass. Of be willing to pay 300 or more for that.
