In my experience, knowing an area is very important. Plan to hunt an area for a couple years. The holes where you’ll find the elk may not be that large. If it’s easy to get to, there are likely no elk there. More random thoughts:
Tipi tents with a stove are incredible. I wouldn’t consider not having mine from 1st season on. I learned the hard way.
Good boots, that you KNOW are not going to hurt your feet are a good thing.
OnX maps are great.
I never see elk in fields on public lands once the shooting starts
It will be much steeper than it appears on Google Maps.
InReach is a capability I’d recommend
When alone, rolling a bull elk over to continue skinning/deboning it can be rather difficult
Always have an old school compass and two lights with you. (Another almost hard lesson)
The cartridge/scope etc. should be roughly #223 on your list of things to worry about
