I've been looking for a good 550-1 for a while, and while not exactly "vintage" I have had great luck with my 552 and 582.
You weren't looking hard enough... I bought a really nice 550-1 (1967 vintage) on gun broker for $200 from a shop in Rhode Island....I'd bet it hadn't had a brick run through it.
