the Techface is basically a soft-shell jacket- an R1 w/ a wind/water resistant shell fabric; personally I think it defeats the purpose of the R1- a highly breathable mid-layer; if you need protection from wind/moisture- simply don a windshirt or hardshell depending on the weather
the additional layer of the Techface will hamper breathability when you don't need the extra layer
all of my R1's have been the pullover, jacket just adds a full zip
