I wear a medium overnighter size backpack. Typically I carry: one liter of water, less if it is cold out. Lunch and snacks, few select first aid items, knife and sharpener, headlamp and a small flashlight, 30’ of cord, lighters, a spare base and/or outer layer, meat bags, gps, phone, pistol, bear mace.
