For me it is a Ruger New Model Vaquero in .45 Colt with a 4 5/8 inch barrel. It is built on the smaller Ruger frame which makes it lighter than the Super Black Hawks. It is the same size as the Colt single actions. It has that classic look and will do what ever I need a revolver to do.

I'll also give an honorable mention to my S&W M-13 which packs very nicely when spending a day in the woods.



I remember reading John Taffins articles about this subject and thoroughly agreed. My de-evolution of this process started with a Freedom Arms .454 then to a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt shooting heavy Buffalo Bore loads and has finally arrived at the .45 Colt New Vaquero. It's almost dainty compared to the two larger guns. A handload pushing the 270-SAA bullet at near 1000fps is enough to take down anything I'll encounter in the lower 48.
