It's all about particle size and bypass. Physics prevails.
Even if the mask were to trap droplets containing COVID, they would soon dry and the virus would be released as a smaller particle which is more subject to Brownian motion and will remain airborne much longer. We are better off letting the droplets fall to the floor.
