I understand the sentiment, but an argument can be made that April 8, 1865 was a watershed date...or the day Lincoln was elected.

Or you can go all the way back to The Whiskey Rebellion.

I guess it just depends on whether you think it's government action or social degeneracy allowing the decay to continue. I choose the latter.
