No, no, no we should not have backed the Ukraine. We [bleep] around in Ukraine enough that we precipitated the last crisis. The Russians are not going to let the Crimea be run by a hostile power. It’s not going to happen. When we engineered a color revolution in Ukraine, Russia simply walked outside its headquarters in the Crimea, changed the flag, and officially reclaimed a place it had owned for hundreds of years. That’s about all they had to do and even that would t have happened but for our meddling.
Now, the Ukrainians, with our backing have pretty much declared war on Russia and Russia ain’t having it.

The Crimea has been Russian for centuries. During the Soviet period, when the Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, they merely reclassified it as part of the Soviet territory of Ukraine. Upon Ukraine's separation from political unity with Russia, it naturally returned to Russia.
