This is eerily similar to the Danzig Question that precipitated WW II. Poland was unnecessarily provocative to the Germans because they had the backing of Britain and France. Sure, Hitler probably would have eventually gone east anyway, but the Poles took every opportunity to heighten tensions because they were backed by the big boys.
The Ukraine is doing the same thing. And I suspect it will eventually end for them about the same as it did for the Poles.
