I’m not in bear country or do any actual backpack hunting but...
A lighweight commander sized 1911 does fit in the main compartment of a snubby sized HPG kit bag.
I personally use the waist pack version and it is even more none-gun-looking.
One can carry 8+1 of 45 ACP in the gun and spare mags can be carried in the rear-most compartment.
My own handloads of 255 gr LaserCast SWC over 5.2 gr of Unique are going 870 fps and shoot +1” at 10y in a fixed sight Colt Commander and, personally, I can still shoot it better than any Glock and it is less chunky. It is surprisingly soft shooting/less snappy - more so than a Glock 43 for sure.
That’s like having a standard pressure 45 Colt in a soft shooting, slim, lightweight semiauto.
