In 1860 Governor Sam Houston tried real hard to start a war with Mexico, IIRC with the aim of annexing more of it. His reason for doing this was in part because he thought such a war would unite a nation about to be spilt by secession.

I’m pretty sure annexing Tamaulipas and Coahuila woulda added quite a few Mexicans.
