You won't need much magnification for 300 yards. Most people are way over scoped when hunting! Higher magnification is necessary the shooting for precision, but not needed for game hunting. I have made 1000 yards hits on torso sized targets with a 10x scope. In my training classes, we consistently (with a steady rest) stay on 10" steel at 200 yards with red dot sights. Within 300 yds, a good 1-5, 1.5-5, 2-7 would be good. Plus you would have the low end for FOV at close distance. Just my 2 cents.
