Crazy. I've never used a backhoe with vertical outriggers or a side shifting dipper. They are very common features in GB and Europe for exactly the reason you site. I'm not sure the vertical outriggers would be as stable on loose ground if they've got a significantly narrower footprint, but they that might not out weigh their utility working around buildings and infrastructure.
