I've shipped rifles many times, including last fall across the country and I think the most I've paid at USPS has been around $50 or so.
It's important to keep the package as small as possible. If it is even 1/8" over the length, width, or depth allowed in a package pricing level it goes up to the next size pricing level and it sometimes makes a big difference...
