State laws about such things are weird.

Some allow loaded guns, some just loaded magazines.

Maryland used to require them be in a case, and I've heard
that a loaded, detached but close by magazine could be considered
a loaded gun.

I know guys who have been accused of having had a loaded gun
and roadhunting because there was a round on the floor.

They were guilty. The warden didn't have a leg to stand on, but
he ranted and raved like a fool.
I think just enraged that they were
smart enough to get unloaded without him seeing it.

As to bullets hitting the vehicle.
Two brothers I knew were riding up the farm lane and saw a Groundhog
in a hayfield. Mike slid out the drivers side and laid his 22-250 across
the roof of his Scout. His bullet came down through the roof and we out
the side about 4 inches behind Randy's head.

Close call, but those two seemed to always be on the edge.
Ok guys, grew up house that was literally falling down around them.
Within 2 years of the Scout shooting, Mike was dead from a
car wreck and Randy drowned in a farm pound we used to swim in.
Around 20 and 14. Darn sham.

Parents who say they have good kids..Usually don't!
