My first mountain rifle was a 280 Remington - one of my favorite cartridges. It was the least accurate 700 I ever owned. One of the previous owners magma-ported it. I stayed away from Mountain rifles after that. That is until I found a nice 7x57 Mountain rifle. It’s a real sweet rifle - accurate and light. With TTSX bullets it knocks deer down fast.

I blame that magma-porting for the piss-poor accuracy on the 280.

I found a ss 270 barrel on E-bay for $100. It was supposed to be unfired. I unscrewed that 280 barrel and screwed on the 270 barrel. That is now my favorite 270. The last elk I killed was with that 270. But I wouldn’t hesitate to take that 7x57 hunting for a cow.

As I retire my bigger boomers I may buy another mountain rifle if I can one in good shape.

I prefer classic.
