You're right I've never gone on a high dollar hunt, and if I were to do so I might consider using a better scope than my trusty VARI X II. I have however harvested deer during the late buck hunt in Northeastern Washington. This hunt occurs during the rut and the big bucks don't generally leave the thick brush until just before dark. I've shot deer in heavy timber when it was almost dark and have had good luck with the old Leupold. On the other hand, you make a good point, a better scope may have bought me a few extra minutes.
