Emerald shiners are a prized fisherman's resource, but we don't always get enough in local bait shops to last the winter season. The shiner run doesn't always happen and when it does, sometimes the netters just plain miss it. They are also a fragile minnow, very hard to keep alive once they are out of the aerated tanks of the bait shops. Very intolerant of sudden temperature changes, they just like to die and die fast.

"fat heads" or "chubs" are the more common live bait for walleye although some will actually use small sucker minnows (live). Chubs are very hearty, they are tough as hell. Others will tip a jigging lure with only the head from a frozen shiner minnow which also works quite well.
