I'm real good at ranges in my moose hunting area. I've paced them off across lakes and the like when the water's stiff, then write them down on my map. I also own a 400 yard laser range-finder. Beyond that, I'm not shooting except in predetermined, paced-off conditions. My longest shot on moose (20 something now) has been 160 yards, however. Point blank range, practically speaking.

In the high country, I get fairly good (plus or minus 30) after about 3 days of guessing distances and pacing them off - out to 300 or so. Which is why I bought the range finder.....

The only true cost of having a dog is its death.
